Aſter a tour around the school, we worked through the School Plan and the Department Targets for our school. I must say it s not hard for me to talk about all the good things that we have at our school. I look for- ward to working with Joanna and welcome her to the Georges River cluster of schools. Congratulaons and a big thank you to everyone that has supported our drive for a bushfire damaged school. The response has been overwhelming. I know Ms Farah and SRC Seniors have been very busy packing and re packing boxes ready for delivery as soon as we are appointed a school. I hope everyone took the opportunity to have a discussion around eSafety last week. The Safer Internet Day promoon provides the op- portunity for schools and parents to communicate the benefits, and the pialls when being on line. Please keep the conversaon going by referring to the Top Tips for online safety in the newsleer last week. The Kiss & Ridezone in Dame Mary Gilmour seems to be working well (now that we know). The single gate is being opened each morn- ing and aſternoon to allow entry /exit from this area. DATES FOR YOUR DIARY

I had a visit from our new Director, Joanna French this morning. After a tour around the school, we worked through the School Plan and the Department Targets for our school. I must say it’s not hard for me to talk about all the good things that we have at our school. I look for-ward to working with Joanna and welcome her to the Georges River cluster of schools.

Congratulations and a big thank you to everyone that has supported our drive for a bushfire damaged school. The response has been overwhelming. I know Ms Farah and SRC Seniors have been very busy packing and re packing boxes ready for delivery as soon as we are appointed a school.

I hope everyone took the opportunity to have a discussion around eSafety last week. The Safer Internet Day promotion provides the op-portunity for schools and parents to communicate the benefits, and the pitfalls when being on line. Please keep the conversation going by referring to the Top Tips for online safety in the newsletter last week.

The ‘Kiss & Ride’ zone in Dame Mary Gilmour seems to be working well (now that we know). The single gate is being opened each morn-ing and afternoon to allow entry /exit from this area. The suggestion is that cars drop off their children and move up to the next spot when it becomes available. The queue can bank around into Park Avenue if needed as each car moves forward. This is not a parking spot during the Kiss & Ride hours. Be careful of these times.

It was great to see new parents at last week’s P&C meeting. Wel-come, and I certainly hope we see you back again. The P&C is open to all parents. You need 50 cents to become a member which allows you the right to vote on decisions made. The next meeting will be the AGM with all positions declared vacant.

LEARNING AT SCHOOL AND AT HOME It's important to encourage your kids learning

at school and in the home - education empow-

ers our kids, giving them the ability to inter-

pret the world around them.

Learning at home is an opportunity for schools to collaborate with families to foster positive attitudes. It builds the capacity to support your child’s education and wellbeing at home and at school.

Here are some tips to help you support your child with learning at home:

• Learning at home is a reinforcement of the learning that has taken place in class;

• Support your child by establishing a routine where you can sit with them, or nearby, while they work;

• If you can’t always be around while they’re working, another way to do this is setting a time for you to review their work together once they’ve had a go;

• Be available to test their spelling, listening to them reading, and guide them if they can’t see the solution to a problem or don’t know where to look for information;

• Try to avoid simply answering the question;

• Don’t let it turn into a battle or become a negative part of their routine; If you find that your child is struggling with the work or it’s causing anxiety and conflict, its best to stop and arrange a time to meet with your child’s teacher to discuss the issues you are having at home. In this instance, you can instead choose an activity like reading a book or sharing a story, something that causes less stress and anxiety.

Welcome back to the Library at OWPS for 2020.

There has been no escaping the weather this

summer, but maybe you were able to escape to

somewhere else in a book.

Just a reminder that Library lessons are a part of

learning at Oatley West, and all students are ex-

pected to bring their Library bags and borrow

each week. Without a bag, students are not able

to borrow, as we need to protect our Library

books from being accidently damaged. If you

have any spare plastic bags at home, can you

please send them to the Library. We look for-

ward to working with you and your child/children

this year.

LUNCHTIMES IN THE LIBRARY: Always busy!

SPORTS NEWS

TERM 1 WEEK 4 OATLEY WEST LANTERN - The school by the park 17.2.2020

3-6 Season 1 Sport Congratulations to all students who made it into a PSSA team for Season 1. Please ensure you have complet-ed the Eform permission note located on the SkoolBag App by Wednesday. Students also need to return the Code of Conduct to their coaches. Coaches will be sending home information regarding draws, field location and training. Please keep an eye on the SkoolBag App as well as the school Facebook page. PSSA can often be cancelled early Friday morning and parents will be notified via these Apps. In the event of PSSA being cancelled, Tennis, School Sport and all Friday morning training sessions will also be cancelled.   Good luck to all the teams in their first game this week.  3-6 Season PSSA and School Sport Friday Routine The following information outlines the routine for 3-6 Friday morning sport. This is helpful for all students and parents to read through:

Ensure you are at school on time. Your team needs you and buses leave promptly in the morning at 9.30am;

When the bell rings, PSSA and Tennis students are to meet their coaches on the basketball court, School Sport are to meet on the Astro-Turf and Bushwalking are to meet outside Mrs McDonald's classroom;

BYOD devices are to be left at school;  Students must wear a school hat to PSSA. If students do not have a hat, they will not be taken to

sport;  Ensure you bring plenty of water;  Students will return to school at approximately 12pm. They will be given a recess break until

12.30pm to allow them to have something to eat and go to the bathroom;  If you intend to take your child home directly from the PSSA venue, please notify the team coach in

the form of a note. You will be required to sign out your child on the team roll;  Students participating at outdoor venues should use adequate sun protection, e.g. an SPF50+, broad

spectrum, water resistant sunscreen reapplied regularly and a hat.

3-6 PSSA Code of Conduct The behaviour and attitude of our students while in the community reflect on our school and effect the safety and wellbeing of all participants. It is, therefore, essential that all students leaving the school grounds under-stand our expectations and abide by our Code of Conduct. Participation in this activity is dependent on this Code being signed and adhered to. Students participate in PSSA during school hours and under the care and supervision of volunteer teachers. Parents and family members may attend sporting venues if they wish, but need to observe the Code of Con-duct and follow the values of Oatley West Public School at all times. Mrs Di Lucchio

meantime... can you help?

Our small committee is looking for donations to

form part of our raffle prize table. If you have a

business or connections that can offer anything,

big or small, any value, we would love to hear

from you.

There is a lot of work involved with setting up the

night and packing away the next day, so if you are

unable to help with a donation perhaps you can

offer your time instead?

Please email [email protected] to let us know

how you can help.

TRIVIA NIGHT

Manager – Sia Coelho Enquiries: [email protected]

The Uniform Shop is open for your convenience every

Thursday from 9-10am at the end of G Block. This onsite

service would not be available without our wonderful vol-

unteers.

All uniform requirements are outlined on the School web-

site, including our exchange and ordering processes.

Summer Uniform – All students should be wearing their

full Summer Uniform.

Thank you – Many thanks to Jo G and Belinda P who volun-teered at the Uniform Shop last week.

Class Names: Please ensure you nominate your child’s full class name on your order form e.g. 5/6 Pink not 5/6P. The full class name allows us to be able to find your child’s class, for easier delivery.

Orders: All orders are delivered on Thursday when the shop is open, provided the order form is placed in Letter-box No. 8 in the front courtyard of the school by 9.30am.

NB: Orders are not accepted via email

Volunteers needed: Currently, Uniform Shop only has a few regular volunteers who help. If you have a spare hour on Thursday mornings from 9-10am, please consider volun-teering at the Uniform Shop. Whether it’s once a fortnight, month or term, all help is greatly appreciated. NB: A free Volunteers Working with Children check will be required if you wish to volunteer in any capacity at the school.

We take great pride in the appearance of the children at

Oatley West Public School and encourage all students to

wear the correct school uniform.

Can you volunteer? - We need your help with the School Banking program Many thanks to our wonderful parents, Chloe, Lily W and Tina Y who volunteered to process School banking deposits last Thursday.

Our students really enjoy participating in the Com-monwealth Bank School Banking program and to keep this program running we need your help. The program requires a volunteer School Banking Co-ordinator to facilitate the banking and distribution of School Banking rewards. The School Banking is pro-cessed at the same time each week and will only takes a small amount of your time. The Common-wealth Bank will provide support in how to run the program. Your help with the program will greatly ben-efit students as they develop vital saving skills and also help our school with fundraising. Currently, School Banking day is Thursday. If you are interested in volunteering for this great pro-gram, please contact [email protected] https://www.commbank.com.au/content/dam/commbank-assets/banking/school-banking/2020-01/reward-redemption-slip.pdf

Seeing Things Differently

Students in 5/6 Orange were thrilled last week to receive some feedback from the artist

who had inspired them. Chris Kenny is a UK artist who creates 'assemblages' with found

objects. Students looked at his work online and then created some of their own and emailed

the collages to Chris who thought they were 'rather brilliant'. You can see Chris' work here:

http://www.chriskenny.co.uk/ and some of 5/6 Orange’s work is below.

Dear Parents/Carers,

Re: Year 5/6 Ethics at Oatley West Needs Volunteer Teachers!

Primary Ethics at Oatley West Public School was a great success in 2019. We had 6 fully qualified EthicsTeachers teaching over 140 students across years K-6. And expressions of interest continue to be strong for2020.

Volunteer Teachers Needed

Unfortunately, one of our Ethics Teachers stepped down at the end of last year. This will mean theclosure of our 5/6 composite group, and those children will have to return to non-Scripture activities inthe hall.

But it doesn't have to be this way! If you or someone you know (not necessarily an Oatley West parent)is interested in volunteering to become an Ethics Teacher, our classes can continue!

Ethics Teaching is a great benefit toyour own children, a wonderful wayto give back to your community, andgives you a warm feeling inside!*

Extensive Support Provided

Ethics Teaching is not a bigcommitment. It requires only fortyminutes of teaching every Tuesdaymorning, plus approximately half anhour of preparation the nightbefore. Extensive curriculum support material is provided for each lesson, including a minute-by-minutebreakdown of what to do in each class. All curriculum documents have been pre-screened, pre-approvedby the Department of Education, and pre-trialled in actual classrooms. So you don't have to make upyour own material!

New Ethics Teachers are required to attend a two day workshop. Here you will be given detailedinstruction on being an Ethics Teacher including: a background on ethics; role-playing sample classes;classroom management techniques; access to curriculum documents and support forums, and more.

How Do I Express Interest?

For more information please visit the Primary Ethics website: http://www.primaryethics.com.au orcontact Richard Kennard on 0402 629 952.

* Personal happiness cannot be guaranteed

Oatley West Organic Diggers Club

Dear Parents / Carers –

Your child has indicated that they are interested in participating in the Organic Diggers. This

club will meet at lunch, every Tuesday to learn about gardening. We will be planting, weeding

and fertilising our school’s garden patch during these sessions. Produce grown will be used in a

fashion negotiated with the students attending. The club is open to students from years 3 - 6.

In order to do this, children may bring the following items for storage at school:

• Gardening gloves

• Small gardening trowel

The school can provide these items for children without their own equipment.

Please sign the permission slip below, giving consent for your child to participate in Organic

Diggers activities.

Yours sincerely
