Escape the Guilt Trap! For mine iniquities are gone over mine head: as an heavy burden they are too heavy for me.
[Psalm 38:4]
Introduction: How often do you commit a sin, and then fail to find a way to move past the
regret and shame you feel? Most people wrestle with guilt from time to time.
The dictionary defines guilt as 1) the fact or state of having committed an offense, crime,
violation, or wrong, esp. against moral or penal law; and, 2) a feeling of responsibility or
remorse for some offense, crime, wrong, etc., whether real or imagined. In other words, guilt
has two components — the actual offense and the feelings that accompany it.
1. Handling our Guilt. Once we start to feel remorseful about our wrongdoing, we often
fail to respond to our guilt in a healthy manner.
2. The Purpose of Guilt. Guilt is actually a God-given emotion. It has at least three
functions: 1) to prompt us to ask for forgiveness from those we hurt; 2) to motivate us to
make restitution whenever we can; and 3) to draw us back to the Lord. In terms of our
relationship with the Lord, the solution to guilty feelings is simple.
3. Receiving Forgiveness. Many believers are unable to receive God’s forgiveness due to
the emotional programming they’ve received from their upbringing, their church, or their
culture. For instance, their parents might have expected them to be perfect, so they have a
difficult time accepting ourselves when they make moral mistakes. Or, other authority
figures may have emphasized what horrible and shameful children they were when they
did anything wrong and refused to comfort the children after disciplining them.
How can you escape these negative patterns of dealing with guilt? The secret is to train your
mind to believe God’s truth — found in His Word — instead of your feelings. If you feel
guilty after confessing your sins, you know your feelings are not lining up with God’s truth.
Closing: Christ’s death made a way for you to be completely free from the guilt of sin — not
only the offense but also the feelings that accompany it. Admit your guilt to God and those
you offended, make restitution when you can, and return to living in a manner that pleases the
Lord.
Prayer: Father, thank You for Your amazing grace that covers our sin. We never have to
wallow in feelings of guilt. Remind us to turn to You, focusing on the truth in Your Word,
instead of trusting our emotions. I pray this in Jesus’ name, amen!
Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think,
according to the power that worketh in us. Ephesians 3:20

HOSEA 6:1-6
MINISTER: Come, and let us return unto the LORD: for
He hath torn, and He will heal us; He hath
smitten, and He will bind us up. After two
days will He revive us: in the third day He
will raise us up, and we shall live in His
sight.
CONGREGATION: Then shall we know, if we follow on to
know the LORD: His going forth is
prepared as the morning; and He shall come
unto us as the rain, as the latter and former
rain unto the earth.
MINISTER: O Ephraim, what shall I do unto thee? O
Judah, what shall I do unto thee? for your
goodness is as a morning cloud, and as the
early dew it goeth away.
CONGREGATION: Therefore have I hewed them by the
prophets; I have slain them by the words of
My mouth: and thy judgments are as the
light that goeth forth.
ALL: For I desired mercy, and not sacrifice; and
the knowledge of God more than burnt
offerings.

This Week in Black History
Dr. Rebecca Lee Davis Crumpler… Is widely considered by historians as the first African-American woman to become a physician in the states.
Dr. Crumpler was born February 8, 1831 in Christiana, Delaware and raised primarily in Pennsylvania. She moved to Charlestown, Massachuetts where she attended private school and married Wyatt Lee in 1852. She worked as a nurse during a time where adequate health care for poor African-Americans was rare.
Through hard work, Crumpler was accepted into the New England Female Medical College in 1860, which was unheard of at the time. The school made several exceptions for Crumpler, despite protests from members of the staff.
Crumpler’s husband passed in 1863 while she was still in school. Her studies stopped completely when the Civil War began. However, via a fund established by Ohio abolitionist Benjamin Wade, Crumpler re-entered school and completed her coursework in 1864. This made Crumpler the first African-American woman to earn a Doctor of Medicine degree and the only African-American to graduate from her medical school. She married Arthur Crumpler, a former fugitive slave from Virginia who had served with the Union Army at Fort Monroe, Virginia, May 24, 1865.
Crumpler established a practice in the Boston region, tending to poor African-American families, most especially women and children. She details much of her experiences as a physician in her 1883, A Book of Medical Discourses, one of the first such works by an African-American. In the book, Crumpler describes being raised by an aunt who showed her kindness and compassion as her motivation to practice medicine for communities in need. She later moved to Richmond, Va. and worked with the Freedman’s Bureau before returning to her Beacon Hill home in Boston and establishing her practice for the poor there.
Dr. Crumpler passed on March 9, 1895. Her home is now part of the Boston Women’s Heritage Trail and the Rebecca Lee Society, established by Dr. Saundra Maass-Robinson and Dr. Patricia Whitley to honor Black women physicians in 1989.

2017: Healthy Me; Healthy Family! FEBRUARY is National Heart Awareness Month!
Thought for the Week
For a healthy heart, don’t skip breakfast. (American Journal of Clinical Nutrition)
LEARN THE WARNING SIGNS OF A HEART ATTACK Don’t wait to get help if you experience any of these heart attack warning signs. Although some heart attacks are sudden and intense, most start slowly, with mild pain or discomfort. Pay attention to your body — and call 911.
Symptoms Vary Between Men and Women: As with men, women's most common heart attack symptom is chest pain or discomfort. But women are somewhat more likely than men to experience some of the other common symptoms, particularly shortness of breath, nausea/vomiting, and back or jaw pain.
