wer Background
WIND TURBINES – structures that harness the energy from the wind by converting its kinetic energy into mechanical and electrical energy.
Grouped into WIND FARMS, which are either onshore or offshore.
Largest on shore wind farm – Roscoe Wind Farm in Roscoe, Texas

wer Two types of wind turbines:
1) HORIZONTAL AXIS WIND TURBINE (HAWT)
2) VERTICAL AXIS WIND TURBINE (HAWT)

wer A WIND TURBINE’S DESIGN:
•WINGS - like an airplane’s propeller
•WEATHER VANE at the shaft – connected to the computer which controls the velocity of blades
•GEARS LOCATED INSIDE THE SHAFT –Big gears help increase the velocityOf the blades

SWOT Analysis
Strengths
• Free, renewable resource• No harmful emissions• No need to purchase fuel • Minimal operating and
maintenance (O&M) expenses
• Minimal land use
SWOT Analysis
Weaknesses
• High cost of initial investment
• Wind supply may be unreliable and can only be used in support of existing electric grids
• Can only be located in uninhabited areas
• Can produce noise at uncomfortable levels
SWOT Analysis
Opportunities
• Philippines’ location in the monsoon belt results to several potential wind farm locations
• Expansion resulting from the inclusion of the RE sector in the Investment Priorities Plan (IPP)
• Growth from development of small-scale wind turbines
SWOT Analysis
Threats
• Government bureaucracy• Limited available
technology for economical energy storage
Applications
• Bangui Wind Farm is a wind farm in Bangui, Ilocos Norte, Philippines. The wind farm uses 20 units of 70-metre (230 ft) high VestasV82 1.65 MW wind turbines, arranged on a single row stretching along a nine-kilometer shoreline off Bangui Bay, facing the South China Sea.

Cost Benefit Analysis
The planning of a wind farm
It’s never just one windmill.
Steps:1. Set target power
requirement.2. Canvas Turbine Costs.3. Identify a geographical area4. Negotiate Construction Bid.5. Build.
Cost Benefit AnalysisSo how much does it cost exactly?
It depends.
Cost is typicallymeasured in MEGAWATT.
Cost Benefit AnalysisFor Example: Bangui Windmills
Therefore, the cost is roughly $2.27M per
megawatt.
Cost Benefit Analysis
Maintenance Cost
•Less than investment cost
•Estimated to be 2-3% of total investment cost annually
•Increases as Turbines Age
•Developing new turbines that last longer
Cost Benefit Analysis
For Example: Bangui Windmills (cont..)
• Operated by Transco Laoag• Estimated 21 year life• Sells power to INEC for Php4.43 / kWh
under Electricity Sales Agreement
• This price already includes both maintenance and investment cost
• Consider this price versus Meralco’s Rate of roughly Php6.67/kWh
Cost Benefit AnalysisWhat this costs could mean to you:
For example:
Use Macbook Pro 35 Hours a week.
30watts x 35hrs/wk x 52wks/yr
= 54,600 watts/hr or 54.6 kWh
Cost:(Meralco)
54.6 kWh x 6.67 = Php364.18(Wind)
54.6 kWh x 4.47 = Php244.06
Cost Benefit AnalysisCommon Household Items Power Use
Annual Consumption in the Philippines in 2011 was
54,400,000,000 kWh.
Cost Benefit Analysis
• Estimated savings of .07 centavos for every kilowatt-hour produced against fossil fuel power
• Will help an estimated number of 70, 000 household
• Reduced CO2 emission by 56,788 of CO2 per year
• Reduced risk of respiratory problem
Benefits
Ethical Implications Is Wind Power a Green Energy Source?
Impacts to the Ecosystem
• Could kill animals in flight (e.g. eagles, bats, migratory birds)
• Important concern in biodiversity hotspots
Ethical Implications Is Wind Power a Green Energy Source?
Impacts to Surrounding Communities
• Sickness from noise pollution– insomnia– headaches
• Devaluation of Lands– Less people could tolerate
noise from wind turbines
Ethical Implications Is Wind Power a Green Energy Source?
On Job Creation of the Industry
Wind turbines are manufactured in China
Maintenance of wind turbines not labor intensive
Nation-Building Implications
• Seeing that wind farms could only be put up in strategic places in the country, these provinces and other provinces surrounding it would have more opportunities.
• This will provide the local community will more jobs and a means of livelihood.
• Opening such wind farms to these provinces will provide both white collar and blue collar work opportunities.
The benefit in investing on wind energy for the environment is quite obvious.
Having this kind of renewable energy would definitely be advantageous for the environment. But when a country, the Philippines in this case, shifts to this new kind of renewable technology, how would it affect growth of the country?
