Te Punga Karere o Tukua o Punga Tikipunga Panui 17 JUNE 2016 “SUCCESSFUL LEARNERS - THE ONLY OPTION” Kia ora koutou The last few weeks have featured plenty of opportunities for both you as a whanau, and our kura to partner up to support the achievement of our tamariki and some of these are highlighted in this newsletter. I thank those of you who have attended hui and supported from the sidelines. We are a small school with a big heart. We have wonderful students and a committed and talented staff. In and outside the classroom we are committed to providing rich learning opportunities for our tamariki. Our three speakers who took the stage and represented us at Ngā Manu Kōrero, Te Arani Bennett, Tiaho Mahanga and Brandy Henare are an example of this. They all represented their whanau and our kura brilliantly. It was an honour to sit on stage to tautoko two of our speakers at the event. Principal’s rero Ngā Manu Kōrero 2016 Our school was well represented once again at the Model United Nations Assembly held at Auckland Girls' Grammar on the 27th and 28th May. The assembly aims to simulate the working of the United Nations with school teams representing a member country and debating matters of world politics and social concern. Speaking for Slovenia, Joie King, Cassius Harding and Bronson Apiata advocated for changes for refugees and the European Community. All three clearly demonstrated the wonderful participation and involvement typically shown by our students. Model United Nations Assembly As this was a multi-level activity, some of the students didn’t know each other prior to this weekend. Students could take the helm (under the watchful eye of the skipper), work as a team to hoist the sails and pull them down and stow them, work the grinders, become skilled in some rope work and knot tying and muck in to clean the deck, help prepare meals and keep the boat clean and tidy. There were several team-building problem-solving activities which were a lot of fun and very competitive. The weather was kind to us and students swam at 6.30am. The breeze was gentle and good to start with having so many novices on board but as skill levels and confidence increased, all on board were hoping for stronger winds to really get the feel of the big boat at speed. The students had a ball. Several said they wished it could have been 4 days but they all learned a lot about themselves and the importance of team work. The students were a credit to our school and to their whanau and a pleasure to be with. Their smiles all weekend said it all. By Mrs Anderson On the 7 th and 8 th of May, Mr Solomon and I accompanied 2I senior students on a weekend of sailing. For most, this was their first time sailing and they had a mixture of excitement and trepidation. We set sail from Leigh. Students learnt about the history of this famous yacht and its place in NZ sailing history. After spending just a weekend on board, they began to understand what it would be like to sail around the world in all weather conditions and in confined quarters. This was a leadership opportunity for students as well as being a good “getting to know each other“time. We Care - Awhina We Learn - Ako We Succeed - Angitu Brandy deserves special mention as she won the Junior English section. The standard of speakers at the event was very high and it is an exceptional performance to win such a prestigious award. I would like to acknowledge the support our three speakers had from staff and whanau. Our senior school ball held at ASB stadium was a huge success. The photos show how much the students enjoyed themselves. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the staff and ball committee for their mahi which made this night the success it was. Our new Board of Trustees was announced last week. I welcome Hugh Oakley-Browne and Sharon Hall to the team. I also acknowledge Veronica Turketo, Tracey Cooper and Tom Davison who have served on our board as chairperson, parent and staff representative respectively. All three added to our kura and wider community and I thank them for their service. Winter is now upon us and it is important for our tamariki to look after themselves and to stay warm. We have a number of Warriors jackets that we can support students with. We thank you for supporting our kaupapa and ensuring students are in uniform. The vast majority of our students are wearing our uniform with pride. Finally, attendance has a huge impact on the achievement at any level. Anything we can do as a whanau to support our students’ attendance will have a significant impact on our tamariki. Nō reira tēnā koutou, tēna tātou katoa Alec Solomon Principal/Tumuaki Tiaho Mahanga Senior English (Korimako trophy), Te Arani Benett Junior Māori section (Rawhiti Ihaka) and Brandy Henare Junior English Section (Turi Kara) competed at this year’s Ngā Manu Kōrero Regional Speech Competitions at Bay of Islands College last week. All three students spoke with mana, strength and pride and represented Tikipunga High School well placing in the top 10 in their sections. For Te Arani and Brandy it was their first time competing at such a prestigious event and placing in the top for te Taitokerau Region. For Tiaho, it was facing another challenge at which she did very well placing 3rd overall in Senior English impromptu and 12th overall in her section. Te Arani placed 4th overall in her section with 1 1/2 points between her and second place and 4 points away from 1st place. We are proud of all our students and their achievements at this year’s competition. We are proud to announce that Brandy Henare won her section and will be representing te Taitokerau at National Ngā Manu Kōrero next term which will be held here in Whangarei.
