Another exciting development is the renaming of our school blocks. I would like to thank Matua Joby Hopa for his mahi with this piece of work. You will know from this and previous pānui that this term has been incredibly busy. Thank you for your support of our recent student led whanau learning hui. It is always wonderful to share in this partnership with you and our students. Senior students are all working hard towards their NCEA qualifications. Our middle school students are working towards their trajectory targets/te ara poutama. - THEY CAME, WE SAW, GO THE ALL BLACKS

ALL BLACKS: Nepo Laulala (Prop)

Angus Ta’avao (Prop) Rieko Ioane (Wing)

Patrick Tuipulotu (Lock)

Last week we joined Te Putahitanga and students from various schools around Northland to meet and greet some of the All Blacks at the Stan Semenoff Stadium. Students, Teachers and Parents lined up on both sides of the cordoned ropes forming a pathway for the players to run through to the stage. Everybody cheered as they walked up to the stage platform. They tried to get everyone to welcome them on with a haka but I think the audience really just wanted to meet and talk to them and participate in the workouts and activities they had organised around the field. After the speeches and formalities, the players split themselves up to work with the various schools. A lot of the students were quite disappointed that Sonny Bill Williams was unavailable but soon forgot about it once they involved themselves in the speed activities. There was a lot of joking and laughter when students started showing off some of their ball skills. What a great day it was! Shaking hands and running with the All Blacks on a beautiful spring morning, while eating free lollies and sausage sizzles. Who can ask for more. Go the All Blacks!

IMPORTANT DATES

Thank you for all your support of the Spoken Word Poetry Workshops over the last two days! Students who participated gained lots out of the activities. Ken, the presenter, was the Grand Slam Poetry Winner in America (a big deal in the Spoken Word Poetry World) and we were very lucky to have his energetic and fast paced workshops. Big thanks to Greg, Hayley and Mo for their presence and support of the students!

The comments from the students were positive: "It was eye -opening". "Thank you". "Awesome, much enjoyed and appreciated".

'Much much cooler than I thought it was going to be!" "I haven't written a poem in a while but you really inspired me to open up and write again!!"

Extracts from student’s poetry –

"I am a girl who sees the world, not through others eyes only through mine. I see this generation in more than one way, sometimes people can't express what they have to say. I feel this can change if only our generation didn't feel so strange. I find strength in passion, things ain't always about what's in fashion".

'I see people with potential who don't use it. Who need that constant affirmation that things can be better. I see people with no trust and love in one another. I see beautiful smiles that can brighten up anyone's day but unhappiness is behind the smile. I see heart and soul everyday."

"I am a young person trapped through illusion of anime. I am from an evolving generation. I see dark visions of clarity, I see fake understanding. I see a beautiful touched world with self centred people. Tomorrow is a place where blurry visions of the unknown are explored."

"I am my father's son, his father's moko. I am a child waiting to grow up and leave home. I am from Matawaia and Australia and accept this. I see light at the end of the tunnel not just for me but for everyone, good and bad. I see bad people trying to be good but still not being accepted for trying. I feel like I could stand up and make an impact."

IMPORTANT SCHOOL REMINDERS

Attendance – Our expectation for school attendance is a minimum of 85%. Regular

attendance at school is vital to support your tamariki’s learning. Absence from school is likely to affect learning and achievement. Please also be aware if attendance drops under this percentage it can affect students being able to take part in EOTC activities and sporting events.

Chromebooks – As we are move forward as a digital school, Chromebooks are listed as a required item on

the school stationery list for Yr 7-10 Students. Please phone the Main Office for information regarding purchase through the Tai Tokerau Education Trust. They have great payment plans that include a cover and insurance at as little as $3.50 a week!

Cellphones – Our school Kaupapa for cellphones is that they are switched off and kept in bags during class

times. Students can use phones during interval and lunch.

School Absences – If your child is away from school, contact the Student Support Centre before 9.00am

on 0800437329 ext 731 or press 0 to reach the Main Office.

The SSC has an answerphone and you can leave a message outside of school hours. Any planned absence, e.g. holiday, graduation, etc, needs to be approved through a written request to the Principal. In the case of illness, please make sure that you phone in each day that your child is unwell. As children recover at different rates and for your child’s safety, we need to know whether to expect them at school or not. Please also note that medical absences for periods of three days or more require a medical certificate upon your child’s return to school. Thank you.

Passes – If your child is leaving the school grounds at any time during the school day, please contact the

school office or send your child to school with a note to be excused. We have had a number of students during interval and lunchtime requesting leave passes to go to the shops without notification. No notification NO pass.
