    Title: Task-based Learning (Christmas)

    Type: Unit plan

    KLA: English Language

    Level: 2 grade

    School: Magic World School

    Background

This task-based unit serves to increase students motivation in learning English and to improve their speaking skills. It is adapted from Christmas Visit. In the design of this

unit, much emphasis has been placed on contextualizing and personalizing the learning activities to provide students a purposeful situation to express their own ideas,

feelings, preferences and opinions using the targeted language structure. Focus has also been put on strengthening the integration of the learning tasks to make the unit

more coherent to give students better chances to produce specific language items recently introduced, sometimes in combination with the previously learned items. Instead

of covering several grammar items at a time in one single unit, only one grammar item i.e. simple present tense is targeted to give students focused and repeated exposureto its varied uses. This strengthened consolidation, together with the incorporation of the controlled and semi-controlled speaking practice of different interaction patterns --

whole-class, pair-work and individual can greatly improve students accuracy and confidence in speaking. It is also a new initiative of the school to implement a talk diary in

this particular unit to increase students initiative to speak English in class. Besides, language arts materials like video and songs are infused into the unit to increase

students interest to learn in this unit.
