Earth’s thermostat: revisiting the controls on the long-term carbon cycle
Dr. Laurence Coogan
School of Earth and Ocean Sciences, University of Victoria, Canada
Divendres, 19 de gener de 2018
Summary
Earth has maintained a habitable climate for >3.5 billion years. This is perhaps surprising given the large
changes in solar luminosity and fluxes of greenhouse gasses into the atmosphere over this time. This climate stability
suggests that, over geological timescales, there is a feedback such that increased surface temperature leads to increased
draw-down of CO2 from the atmosphere and hence a decreased greenhouse effect and a cooling of the surface. The
textbook explanation of this is that increased surface temperature leads to increased continental chemical weathering
and hence increased alkalinity fluxes to the ocean that lead to CO2 consumption through carbonate mineral
precipitation. There are problems with this model. Here I propose that an equally, or perhaps more, important feedback
comes from increased surface temperature leading to increased bottom water temperature and increased dissolution of
basalt in seafloor (off-axis) hydrothermal systems. Off-axis hydrothermal systems operate across the abyssal plains
and have fluid fluxes of the same magnitude as the global river flux. Fluid in these systems is only heated slightly
above bottom water making the temperature of fluid-rock reaction sensitive to global climate (that controls bottom
water temperature) and the reactions between basalt and fluid are very temperature sensitive and generate alkalinity
consuming CO2 and forming carbonate minerals (calcite and aragonite).
Brief biography
Laurence is an Earth scientist who works largely on the role of the formation and hydrothermal cooling of the
oceanic lithosphere in the Earth system. His work spans from mantle melting and the accretion of new oceanic crust
at mid-ocean ridges through black smokers and hydrothermal sediments to the low-temperature (10’s of °C) alteration
of the crust as it ages over 10’s of millions of years. He uses field (seagoing and ophiolite), cabled observatory,
experimental, analytical and modeling approaches largely with a geochemical focus. He was educated in the UK
(degrees from U. Liverpool and U. Leicester and post docs at U. Cardiff and U. Leicester) before moving to a faculty
position in Canada at U. Victoria in 2004 where he is currently a professor.

i planificació?

CREAF, Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona
Divendres, 2 de febrer de 2018
Resum
investigació i gestió?

When a beneficial endosymbiont goes bad
Dr. John McCutcheon
Division of Biological Sciences, University of Montana, United States of America
Divendres, 9 de febrer de 2018
Summary
The genomes of endosymbiotic bacteria are often extremely stable in structure, size, and gene content. For
example, endosymbionts in insects diverged by tens or hundreds of millions of years often have genomes almost
completely conserved in gene order and content. This conservation is thought to reflect the importance of the
endosymbiont to its host: these bacteria often provide essential nutrients or defensive functions. In this talk I will show
that an endosymbiont of cicadas has repeatedly fractured into complexes of distinct genomic and cellular lineages. I
will discuss how these patterns show interesting parallels to the genomic instability seen in some mitochondria.
Brief biography
John McCutcheon is an associate professor at the University of Montana in Missoula, Montana, USA. He and
his lab are interested in symbioses. They work with a number of model systems, including sap-feeding insects and
their endosymbiotic bacteria, ambrosia beetles and their ectosymbiotic fungi, and the consortia of fungal and
photosynthetic partners that form lichens. They use a variety of approaches—genomics, microscopy, molecular
biology, molecular evolution, cell biology, and field biology—to address their questions. John is an Associate Editor
at Genome Biology and Evolution and is on the Editorial Board at Current Biology.

Dr. Jordi Isern-Fontanet
Departament d'Oceanografia Física i Tecnològica, Institut de Ciències del Mar
Divendres, 16 de febrer de 2018
Resum
Satellite infrared radiometers have unveiled the existence of distinct turbulence regimes in the upper ocean.
These regimes have different contributions on the vertical transport of nutrients, heat, and climatically important gases
between the oceanic upper layers and the ocean interior; and contain information about the dynamics in the mixed
layer. The main difficulty is to define descriptors able to univocally identify such turbulence regimes and quantify the
dynamical characteristics of the upper ocean. In this study, we have investigated the capability of different descriptors
to characterize turbulence regimes from the observations of infrared Sea Surface Temperatures (SST) provided by the
AATSR sensor (Envisat). First, data have been divided into granules adapted to the observed cloud coverage with a
maximum size of 512 by 512 pixels (i.e. 512 km by 512 km). These granules have been classified into two groups: one
characterized by the presence of submesoscale instabilities (∼ 5-10 km) and one characterized by the presence of
vortices and filaments. Then, for all the granules of each group we have explored the statistical and geometrical
properties of SST using spectral analysis and the curvature of SST fronts completed with the analysis of the multifractal
properties of SST images obtained from singularity analysis. Results have shown that both groups of images were
characterized by similar spectral slopes. On the contrary, the characteristics of the singularity spectra of both groups
were different indicating different inttermitencies and allowing to identify the distinct dynamical regimes.

understanding of their role in Earth's climate. To this end the approach he mainly follows consists on the systematic
application of recent theoretical results to ocean and atmospheric observations such as remote sensing data. This
approach is complemented with the analysis of numerical simulations. In addition to his interest on general processes,
he is very interested in the understanding of the Mediterranean area.

Environmental variability and organismal responses in a changing ocean
Dr. Lydia Kapsenberg
Departament de Biologia Marina i Oceanografia, Institut de Ciències del Mar
Divendres, 2 de març de 2018
Summary
My research integrates oceanography and marine physiology to understand the adaptive capacity of marine
species and the potential for local management of ocean change. In this talk I will cover examples of coastal ocean pH
variability and acidification/warming trends in the Mediterranean Sea, and examples of biological responses to natural
pH variation (early developmental physiology of mussels). I will also introduce my current postdoctoral research
project, which assesses mussel physiology and the potential for local management of ocean change in Delta de Ebro.
Brief biography
Dr. Lydia Kapsenberg is a marine scientist who studies the impacts of ocean acidification on coastal marine
invertebrates. Her expertise is on applied research using techniques spanning oceanography and marine physiology.
She received her PhD from the University of California Santa Barbara in 2015. Her first postdoc was funded by the
United States National Science Foundation postdoctoral fellowship to work with Dr. Jean-Pierre Gattuso in the

Summary
Marine turtles are characterised by having complex life cycles that takes decades to complete. These cycles
usually include migrations that involve very distant geographical areas, both at nesting beaches and at sea. Furthermore,
marine turtles spent most of their lives at sea, and thus are difficult to study during long periods. The Mediterranean
loggerhead turtle (Caretta caretta) provides an excellent case study on how highly migratory species with complex
life cycles can be studied. The combination of genetics with additional techniques has allowed the answering of many
different biological and conservation questions in the past decades on these endangered animals. This includes
population structuring, determined by female and male philopatry, or how the Mediterranean was colonised and
survived past cold events. Furthermore, genetics have provided unique tools for identification of the population of
origin of animals at sea, allowing the assessment of the impact of fisheries related mortality to the populations affected,
to detect barriers to dispersion, to establish foraging strategies and to determine differential growth rates related to the
origin of the individuals. Finally, sporadic nesting events in the western Mediterranean have been associated to
colonisation events as an effect of global warming and as a potential mechanism to exploit new suitable nesting habitats
despite philopatry. All these results show the potential of genetics to study highly migratory species.
Breu biografia
Deciphering the structuring and connectivity of marine organisms is crucial to understand their biology and
to develop conservation and management plans by establishing links between threats and affected populations. Carlos
Carreras has devoted his career to study the biology, population genetics, distribution, migration, conservation and
adaptation of marine organisms. During his PhD at the University of Barcelona, followed by a PhD-student stay at the
Biological Station of Doñana-CSIC, he investigated the connectivity of the different loggerhead sea turtle populations
at different stages (juveniles and adults) in the Mediterranean and the Atlantic and linked these populations with the
different fisheries threats found in the area. This was accomplished by combining the use of genetic markers with

several additional techniques, including satellite telemetry, aerial surveys, particle modelling, experimentation with
captive animals or fisheries interaction evaluation. During his postdoctoral stay he continued his research on different
species of marine turtles but he also started his interest on the impact of climate change on marine species and the
mechanisms of these species to react. Thus,
highly philopatric species with temperature
determined sex could colonise new areas when
the previously reproductive beaches become
unsustainable using long dispersal
mechanisms. He continued the study of
adaptation to temperature changes and
connectivity of populations when he moved to
the University of Barcelona by using high
throughput sequencing to detect and genotype
SNPs on a variety of marine organisms.

La xarxa de recerca marina europea EuroMarine - From genes to
ecosystems in changing oceans
Dr. Elisa Berdalet
Departament de Biologia Marina i Oceanografia, Institut de Ciències del Mar
Divendres, 16 de març de 2018
Resum

Sea surface CO2 in the changing Arctic
Dr. Mike DeGrandpre
University of Montana, Missoula, Montana, United States of America
Divendres, 23 de març de 2018
Summary
The carbon cycle in the Arctic Ocean is intimately connected to the loss of sea ice, but it is not clear how CO2
sources and sinks are changing, and if they could affect greenhouse gas accumulation in the atmosphere and oceans.
Using a 5-year shipboard time series in the Canada Basin, we show that loss of sea ice leads to rapid and large increases
in sea surface pCO2 and ocean acidification. Sea surface partial pressure of CO2 (pCO2) is strongly negatively
correlated with ice extent. The relationship indicates that the Arctic Ocean sea surface will soon reach or surpass
atmospheric saturation as ice extent continues to decline. Commensurate with the increase in pCO2, mean sea surface
pH levels decrease seasonally by >0.1 pH units depending upon seasonal ice extent. This talk will also provide an
overview of other documented changes in the Arctic Ocean.
Brief biography
Mike DeGrandpre studied chemical engineering at Montana State University (USA) and then went on to
obtain a PhD in analytical chemistry in 1990 at the University of Washington. His post-doc and subsequent research
position at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution focused on the development of a CO2 sensor (the “SAMI”) for
marine applications. His key contributions include important breakthroughs in the development of autonomous
biogeochemical instrumentation (DeGrandpre et al. 1995; Seidel et al. 2008; Spaulding et al. 2013). This technology
was the recipient of the Ocean Health XPRIZEs for pH sensor technology in 2015. He has used these instruments to
study carbon cycling in many different marine and freshwater environments with a current focus on the Arctic Ocean.

Circuits i subsistemes a l'Oceà Atlàntic
Dr. Josep Lluís Pelegrí
Departament d'Oceanografia Física i Tecnològica, Institut de Ciències del Mar
Divendres, 6 d’abril de 2018
Resum
We will discuss the main thermocline connections in the Atlantic Ocean: the subantarctic waters entering the
South Atlantic Ocean, the transfer of subantarctic and South-Atlantic waters to the tropical ocean, the equatorial jets
and tropical/subtropical cells, the subtropical thermocline circulation and shadow zones in both hemispheres, and the
quite different character in the fate of western boundary currents in the South and North Atlantic Oceans. These distinct
thermocline regions, each of them with unique characteristics, are interpreted as subsystems of the pulmonary circuit
of a living ocean.

Ocells marins i pescadors, vides entrelligades
Dr. Pep Arcos
Responsable del Programa Marí de SEO/BirdLife
Divendres, 13 d’abril de 2018
Resum

divulgació marina i mediambiental
Dr. Josep Maria Gili
Departament de Biologia Marina i Oceanografia, Institut de Ciències del Mar
Divendres, 11 de maig de 2018
Resum
aconseguint gràcies a desenvolupar activitats conjuntes.

Symbiotic Earth: How Lynn Margulis rocked the boat and started a
scientific revolution
A documentary from John Feldman, film director
HummingbirdFilms, United States of America
Divendres, 1 de juny de 2018
Summary
Symbiotic Earth is the story of a scientific rebel. A model of female empowerment, Lynn Margulis fought the
male establishment and, through her persistence, triumphed. As a young scientist in the 1960s, Margulis was ridiculed
when she articulated a theory that symbiosis was a key driver of evolution. Instead of the mechanistic view that life
evolved solely through random genetic mutations and competition, she presented a symbiotic narrative in which
bacteria joined together to create the complex cells that formed animals, plants, and all other organisms. The idea that
all of life is deeply interconnected and collaborative has radical implications for how we look at our selves, evolution,
and the environment. Filmmaker John Feldman traveled globally to meet Margulis’ cutting-edge colleagues and
continually asked: What happens when the truth changes? Symbiotic Earth examines the worldview that has led to
climate change and extreme capitalism and offers a new approach to understanding life that encourages a sustainable
and symbiotic lifestyle.
Symbiotic Earth is divided into 10 chapters:
1 - How Lynn Margulis Coerced Me Into Making This Film
2 - How Science Gave Us Permission to Exploit the Earth
3 - Confronting the Neo-Darwinian Capitalistic Zeitgeist (aka: How Science Gave Us Permission to
Exploit Each Other)
4 - Lynn Margulis’ Lifelong Quest

Dr. Laia Gràcia i Mont
Departament de Geociències Marines, Institut de Ciències del Mar
Divendres, 8 de juny de 2018
Summary
Geological hazards, such as earthquakes and tsunamis, are a major societal concern. Seismogenic faults may
be silent in the instrumental and historical periods, and their seismic potential may remain inadvertently hidden,
especially in areas of slow tectonic deformation with faults able to generate large-magnitude earthquakes (Mw > 6)
with long recurrence intervals (103-104 years). This is the case of the active faults in the Gibraltar Arc System (Alboran
Sea and Gulf of Cadiz), which hosts the convergent boundary between the Iberian and Nubia plates (4.5-5.6 mm/yr).
Our dataset results from an integration of acoustic and seismic data acquired with a multiscale approach, utilizing AUV
near-bottom bathymetry, shipboard bathymetry, high-resolution seismics and deep penetration multichannel seismics
(MCS). We follow a multi-scale approach to characterize and built realistic marine fault source models from selected
reverse and strike-slip fault systems in the Gulf of Cadiz (Marques de Pombal, Lineament South) and Alboran Basin
(Carboneras, Yusuf and Al-Idrissi FS). The present-day crustal deformation of the south Iberian margin is driven by
the NW-SE convergence (4.5-5.6 mm/yr) between the Nubia and Eurasian plates. This convergence accommodates
over a wide deformation zone with significant activity south of the Iberian Peninsula, which includes the Gulf of Cadiz
(Atlantic) and the Alboran Sea (Western Mediterranean). Here, instrumental seismicity is characterized by seismic
events of low to moderate magnitude (Mw < 5.5). Nevertheless, large destructive earthquakes (Intensity IX-X and up
to Mw 8.5) occurred in the region as revealed by historical and instrumental records. According to fault trend, geometry
and time of activity, fault systems divide in different segments that if linked, may have the potential to generate large
earthquakes and associated tsunamis.

Gats i tigres ... sota el mar? Una aproximació taxonòmica i etològica a la
simbiosi en organismes bentònics
Dr. Daniel Martin
Centre d’Estudis Avançats de Blanes (CEAB – CSIC)
Divendres, 15 de juny de 2018
Resum

Norwegian University for Science and Technology (NTNU), Trondheim, Norway
Divendres, 22 de juny de 2018
Resum

Cold-water coral communities: a bridge between geology, ecology and
oceanography
Dr. Claudio Lo Iacono
National Oceanographic Center, Southampton, United Kingdom
Divendres, 29 de juny de 2018
Summary
Cold-Water Coral (CWC) communities are Vulnerable Marine Ecosystems and are listed as habitat of special
interest in several international actions on marine environmental protection. CWC ecosystems are considered as deep
sea biodiversity hotspots, serving as nursery grounds, feeding and refuge areas for a highly diverse associated fauna
including several fish of economic importance and invertebrate species. This is especially true for “stony corals”, some
of which are able to build hard skeletons forming complex three-dimensional bioconstructions, as reefs and carbonate
mounds. CWC mounds are the product of complex interactions through the geologic time between calcifying
organisms and the surrounding environment, and deeply contribute in affecting the evolution of the submarine
landscape in space and time. Important variables contributing to the evolution of these carbon factories include
sedimentary dynamics, food supply, physical and chemical characteristics of water masses and local hydrodynamic
regimes. For the reasons above CWC mounds are also considered as archives of past climate and oceanographic
conditions. In this talk I will present an overview of CWC mounds in the Alboran Sea (Western Mediterranean) through
a multidisciplinary and holistic approach, focusing on their evolution since the Last Glacial Maximum until the present-
day. Stratigraphic, ecological and geochemical analyses of gravity cores on the Alboran mounds, corroborated by
absolute dating, reveal intense coral growth during the Bølling-Allerød period (14.7-12.7ky BP), whereas the demise
of suitable conditions for CWCs roughly coincides with the end of the Organic Rich Layer 1 (~9.2ky BP). However,
despite Alboran CWC mounds nowadays being inactive, recent findings revealed the existence of pristine reefs of
Lophelia pertusa and Madrepora oculata, totally uncommon for the Mediterranean Sea. Measures of oceanographic
variables and seafloor heterogeneity across different spatial scales reveal the actual oceanographic regimes essential
for the sustenance of deep sea ecosystem services, maintaining thriving living corals through a direct nutritional link
between surface productivity and 300 m deep reefs. The conclusive part of the talk will explore new cutting-edge
methodologies in predicting CWC distribution and quantifying their physical heterogeneity through 3D
photogrammetry extracted from ROV footage, having direct implications in the science-based management of natural
resources.

Bringing concrete to life: Ecological enhancement of urban waterfronts
and coastal infrastructure
Dr. Shimrit Perkol-Finkel
ECOncrete, Concrete Ecological Solutions, Tel-Aviv, Israel
Divendres, 6 de juliol de 2018
Summary
With two-thirds of the human population concentrated around coastlines, alongside with growing threats from
sea level rise and increased storminess, accelerated coastal development and changes to natural coastlines are
inevitable. Over time, natural coastlines thus undergo severe changes, and in many cases are completely overtaken by
ports, coastal defense measures, power plants, industrial facilities, and residential properties. As most marine flora and
fauna reside in coastal areas, anthropogenic changes to coastlines are one of the key reasons for loss of coastal habitats,
and for significant reduction of ecosystem services provided by urban marine environments. While coastal
infrastructure such as seawalls or breakwaters add significant amounts of hard substrate that can be colonized by marine
organisms, these man-made structures do not support similar species assemblages to those of natural coastal and marine
habitats. This is mainly due to design features related to steep slopes, low structural complexity, and high homogeneity,
all of which are rarely found in natural habitats. To date, coastal and marine infrastructure have overwhelmingly been
designed and built with little or no consideration to marine life developing on them. As a result, their ability to provide
ecosystem services similar to those offered by natural habitats is severely compromised. The seminar will present an
emerging crossdisciplinarity approach, which involves the planning, design and retrofitting of hard structures to create
multifunctional Blue-Green Infrastructure using ecologically sensitive designs and construction technologies that
enhance their ability to provide valuable ecosystem services. These services are especially critical along urbanized
coastlines as these locations are where ecosystem services are under the most threat and are most needed by society.

Ecologia de bacteris fotoheterotròfics marins
Dr. Isabel Ferrera
Departament de Biologia Marina i Oceanografia, Institut de Ciències del Mar
Divendres, 21 de setembre de 2018
Resum
a l'ús d'eines moleculars.
Barcelona l'any 2008.

Humboldt
Dr. Andrés Ospina-Álvarez
Institut Mediterrani d’Estudis Avançats, IMEDEA-UiB, Mallorca
Divendres 28 de setembre 2018
Summary
In this seminar, the documentary video "Larvas: las viajeras del océano, conectando las caletas a lo largo de
Chile" will be presented. With an approximate duration of seven minutes, the video was conceived as the main product
to disseminate the results of a three-year research project conducted off the coast of central Chile. The video includes
original underwater pictures and videos captured in Las Cruces Marine Protected Area, as well as illustrations by
Andrés Juan, a Chilean artist who reflects the work of fishermen in an exceptional way. Subsequently, and in an
academic format, the results of the project will be shown. The keynote will show the results of the project that include
as onshore recruitment, dispersal and connectivity among populations are not correlated across the different larval
behaviours, as it has often been implied in the literature and that timing of peak larval release must receive more
attention within the upwelling ecosystems. The keynote will also illustrate the importance of examining fundamental
questions of the dispersal process, distance, recruitment, retention, connectivity, in different regions of the world’s
costal ocean. Highlights results from this study are: 1) Onshore recruitment is not correlated across the different larval
behaviours; 2) Diel vertical migration (DVM) increases recruitment, but also mean dispersal distance; 3) DVM effect
on recruitment is of lesser importance than timing larvae are released; 4) Small changes in pelagic larval duration
(PLD) are of higher importance than DVM effect on recruitment; and 5) DVM magnify the differences in spatial
patterns of recruitment across PLDs.

educational background for a biologist, which allows me to investigate spatial ecology questions in a novel manner.
During my Ph.D., I gained experience with state-of-the-art ecological modelling techniques, including oceanographic
tools for the analysis of satellite remote sensing products and statistical skills. As a post-doctoral researcher, I worked
with WWF (Mediterranean office) from 2012 to 2015, in the innovative project ‘On the Med tuna trail’, a satellite
tagging project that gathered empirical information on the ecology of juvenile and adult bluefin tuna in the
Mediterranean Sea. In 2013, I started working as postdoc researcher in the Marine Conservation Center CCM (ECIM-
PUC) in Chile. My research focused on the development of a coupled particle tracking (IBM) and a 3D hydrodynamic
model to explore the larval transport of benthic invertebrates and rocky fish along the Chilean coast. Results allow to
understand the processes that govern the larval dispersal and population dynamics of species of high economic interest
and to implement management solutions for spatial planning and conservation in Chile. Currently, I am a H2020 Marie
S. Curie fellow leading the Co-tRiP project: "Dolphinfish living in a warming ocean: How global climate change is
reshaping the distribution, physiology and behaviour of marine migratory species and their associated fisheries" and
working in the Mediterranean Institute for Advanced Studies (IMEDEA).

The role of bioaerosol in Arctic atmosphere: understanding microbial
sources, survival, and activity in the Arctic atmosphere
Dr. Tina Šantl-Temkiv
Aarhus University, Denmark
Divendres, 26 d’octubre de 2018
Summary
Clouds are the least constrained Arctic atmospheric component that profoundly affects the regional radiative
balance. Their optical properties, thickness and lifetime are tightly interlinked with the presence of atmospheric
particles (aerosols). Aside from dust particles, airborne microorganisms, that are a fraction of biological aerosols
(bioaerosols), have properties, which enable them to interact with the formation and development of clouds, rain, and
snow. In particular, the qualitative and quantitative role of microorganisms carrying proteins specialized to nucleate
cloud ice is heavily debated. During the past two decades, numerous studies in temperate regions have led to a theory
that bioaerosols, such as bacteria, fungi, microalgae, and pollen, impact climate, as they can play a significant role in
controlling the lifetime and extent of clouds. Field measurements in the Arctic demonstrated the presence of airborne
biogenic ice-nucleating particles (bioINP). In addition, remote sensing of Arctic clouds confirmed the presence of
cloud ice at temperatures, where only bioINP have the ability to trigger ice formation. However, up to now, the
importance of bioINP for atmospheric processes in the Arctic has merely been deduced from such episodical
observations and misses a solid foundation based on dedicated field studies combining techinques within atmospheric
science and microbiology. In this talk, I will review our recent attempts to quantitatively and qualitatively characterize
the Arctic atmospheric bacterial communities that have recently been identified as potentially important actors in the
Arctic atmospheric processes. I will show how a combination of low volume sampling, high-flow-rate sampling, next-
generation sequencing and techniques, which are used within atmospheric science, can provide new insights into the
properties and sources of airborne microorganisms.

The Oceans’ cryptic but beautiful life
Dr. Thomas Kiørboe
Centre for Ocean Life, DTU Aqua, Denmark
Dilluns, 11 de novembre de 2018
Summary
Marine life unfolds beneath the surface of the ocean, and the life forms – plankton - that dominate the
biological processes in the ocean are microscopic and invisible. Yet, when visualized, this life demonstrates a beautiful
variety of morphologies and a fascinating diversity of behaviors. While these behaviors and morphologies must be
tailored to optimize the Darwinian mission that any organism is confronted with, i.e., to acquire resources, survive,
and reproduce, this connection is not always obvious. This is partly because, at the scale of microscopic organisms,
water appears as thick as syrup, inertia can be ignored, and flow is reversible, and hence their physical world is non-
intuitive. In this lecture, I will visualize the oceans’ invisible life, explore how their morphologies and behaviors are
adapted to optimize their fitness, and demonstrate how trade-offs between resource acquisition and survival shape
plankton communities. A mechanistic understanding of the trade-offs pave the road for the development of trait-based
models of marine ecosystems, a potentially ‘simple’ way to embrace the complexity of ecosystems and assess the
effects of environmental change. The lecture will be light on physics and rich in movies such that everyone should be
able to follow and enjoy.

Seagrass Blue Carbon: the knowns and the unknowns – an Australian
perspective
Dr. Paul Lavery
Centre for Marine Ecosystems Research, Edith Cowan University, Western Australia
Divendres, 16 de novembre de 2018
Summary
The recent explosion of research on blue carbon (BC) ecosystems (seagrass, tidal marshes and mangroves)
has been driven by the potential to include them in mitigation programs for greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Much
of this research aims to acquire the accurate, repeatable assessments of BC storage and GHG emissions that are needed
to meet the requirements of verification schemes. Here I will summarise what we have learnt about seagrass blue
carbon, including the stocks and accumulation rates of carbon, the factors affecting their carbon sequestration, and the
potential consequences of not conserving these ecosystems, using Australia as an example. The talk will conclude with
an assessment of what we still need to know and do to get BC ecosystems embedded into national and voluntary carbon
crediting projects. Among these needs are some quite basic requirements, like mapping habitats, and some challenging
ones, such as prediction of CO2, CH4 and NO2 emissions rates under different disturbance regimes, and developing
reliable protocols for estimating accumulation rates.

Paul Lavery is Professor of Marine Ecology at Edith Cowan University in Western Australia. He is also
Director of the University’s Centre for Marine Ecosystems Research. Primarily a marine plant ecologist, his research
is focused on the ecology of benthic marine ecosystems and particularly seagrass ecosystems. He has published on
seagrass ecology, coastal biogeochemistry, seagrass ecophysiology and trophic connectivity in marine systems. For
the past 5 years Paul’s research has examined the role that seagrasses play in removing carbon dioxide from our
atmosphere, thereby helping to mitigate against global climate change. He participates in several inter-disciplinary
research programs in Australia and Europe, including an EU Life program on blue carbon in Andalucia as well the
most comprehensive, continental assessment of blue carbon ecosystems in Australia. He was recently contracted by
the Australian Government to provide advice of the opportunities for embedding blue carbon in Australia’s CO2
mitigation policies. Paul is currently on sabbatical in Catalonia, based at CEAB, in Blanes. When not pondering
seagrasses, he can usually be found riding a bicycle in Garrotxa, Montseny or La Cerdanya.

Tempestes bentòniques al Mar Català profund
Dr. Albert Palanques
Departament de Geociències Marines, Institut de Ciències del Mar
Divendres, 23 de novembre de 2018
Summary
High-energy oceanographic processes on deep oceanic regions are poorly known. Large, episodic increases
in bottom currents and water turbidity in the deep ocean were first documented in the Western North Atlantic, where
the term “benthic storms” was initially coined by Gardner and Sullivan (1981). Similar events were studied on the
continental rise and basins of the Atlantic Ocean. Although the origin of these events was not well identified, the
accepted hypothesis is that benthic storms on the western North Atlantic often closely match the position of Gulf
Stream meanders and rings, which energy is propagated downward, sometimes reaching the seafloor in the form of
cyclones, anticyclones, or topographic waves, generating current speeds sufficient to resuspend and erode deep surface
sediments. Time series recorded in the deep Catalan Sea and other north-western Mediterranean areas show several
events causing high currents and suspended sediment concentration increases that could be defined as benthic storms
but produced mainly by bottom-reaching dense water formation and the associated deep eddy activity. These events
are generated by deep open sea convection that induce sediment resuspension and advection and also can be feed and
enhanced by concurrent deep dense shelf water cascading pulses. These benthic storms increase near bottom fluxes by
more than one order of magnitude and transport large amounts of particulate matter with marine and terrestrial OM to
the northwestern Mediterranean Basin, feeding a quasi-permanent thick bottom nepheloid layer. This should contribute
significantly to the “fertilization” of the deep pelagic and benthic ecosystems, playing a major role on global
biogeochemistry.

L’eucarioma: Evolució i diversitat de protistes associats a animals
marins
Dr. Javier del Campo
Departament de Biologia Marina i Oceanografia, Institut de Ciències del Mar
Divendres, 14 de desembre de 2018
Summary
Unlike the study of bacterial microbiomes, the study of the micro-eukaryotes associated with animals has
largely been restricted to visual identification or molecular targeting of particular groups. The application of high-
throughput sequencing (HTS) approaches, such as those used to look at bacteria, has been restricted because the
barcoding gene we use to study protist ecology and distribution in the environment, the 18S rRNA gene, is also present
in the host animals. As a result, when host-associated microbial eukaryotes are analyzed by HTS, the results are
dominated by host sequences. Stemming from our work on coral-associated protists, we successfully developed an
approach that avoids the amplification of metazoan host genes, which allows us to use high-throughput methods to
study the microeukaryotic communities of animals. This approach will open the doors to the study of diversity and
distribution of protists in myriad environments, from the coral surface to zooplankton or the human gut.
Brief biography
My career started in 2006 at the Institute of Marine Sciences (ICM - CSIC) and the University of Barcelona
where I got my PhD degree in 2011. Afterwards, I moved to the Multicellgenome Lab (http://multicellgenome.com/)
at the Institute of Evolutionary Biology where I did a first postdoc (2011-2013). I moved in 2013 to the Keeling Lab
(http://www3.botany.ubc.ca/keeling/) at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada, for a second
postdoc. After more than three years I came back to Barcelona to the ICM –CSIC where currently I am a Juan de la
Cierva Fellow since May of 2017. After almost a decade focused on describing micro-eukaryotic communities from
different ecosystems, I am moving forward from primarily environmentally focused research to a broader one that will
link environmental and organismal focused studies. This new perspective will have an impact on, and connect to, other
disciplines like human and animal health. In particular, my research focuses on host associated micro-eukaryotes
spanning from strict parasites to mutualistic symbionts. To better understand the role of these organisms, I use both
culture independent and culture-based methods. In the first case, I use a range of high throughput sequencing
techniques to assess organismal and functional diversity, including metabarcoding, metagenomics,

metatranscriptomics and single cell genomic analyses. In the second case, I try to capture some of these new organisms
by developing novel culturing approaches designed with the corresponding environment in mind. Once an organism
is cultured, we can generate high quality genomes and develop experiments in the laboratory to deeply understand
their biology. Overall, my research uses both wet- and dry-lab methods, taking advantage of state-of the-art molecular
and bioinformatics approaches.

Seismic full waveform inversion for fundamental scientific and industrial
problems
Dr. Satish Singh
Institut de Physique du Globe de Paris (France), Nanyang Technological University (Singapore)
Dilluns, 17 de desembre de 2018
Summary
Seismic waveform inversion is a powerful method used to quantify the elastic property of the subsurface.
Although the development of seismic waveform inversion started in the early 1980s and was applied to solve scientific
problems, it became popular in industry only about 15 years ago. One of the key elements in the success of seismic
waveform inversion has been the increase of the acquisition of long offset seismic data from 3 km in the early 1990s
to more than 15 km today. Not only did long offset data provide refraction arrivals, but it also allowed recording of
wide-angle reflections, including critical angles, providing unique information about the subsurface geology. In this
talk, I will elaborate on the early development of the seismic full waveform inversion (FWI) and its application to
solve fundamental scientific problems. The first big success of FWI was its application to gas hydrate reflections, also
known as bottom simulating reflection (BSR), which showed that the BSRs are mainly due the presence of a small
amount of free methane gas, not a large amount of hydrates stored above the BSR, and hence the total amount of
methane stored in marine sediments should be much less than previously estimated. A second major success of FWI
was its application to quantify the characteristics of the axial melt lens observed beneath ocean spreading centers. The
seismic full waveform inversion results show that one can distinguish between pure melt and partially molten mush
within a 50 m thick melt lens, allowing to link the melt delivery from the mantle with the hydrothermal circulation on
the seafloor. The application of full waveform inversion to spreading center problems has become an important area
of research.
Brief biography
Satish Singh was born and raised in Varanasi, India, and earned a PhD in theoretical seismology at the
University of Toronto, Canada. He joined the group of Professor Albert Tarantola at the Institut de Physique du Globe
de Paris in 1988 and then moved to the University of Cambridge in 1990 where he developed a group in theoretical
seismology. Soon after arriving in Cambridge, Singh realized the importance of combining seismic reflection and
refraction data and started developing new joint tomographic and full waveform inversion techniques. He also

recognized the potential of these techniques in solving numerous fundamental scientific problems. He led the
establishment of the LITHOS Group to develop methods to jointly analyze seismic and marine electromagnetic data
for subbasalt imaging in 1998. Soon after, he moved to the Institut de Physique du Globe de Paris to lead the creation
of the Marine Geoscience Department that he ran until 2008, while keeping a part-time position at the U. of Cambridge.
After the 2004 great Andaman Sumatra earthquake and tsunami, he persuaded Schlumberger to fund the acquisition
of long offset seismic data offshore Sumatra in 2006 and ed CGG to fund a similar experiment in 2009, deploying a
15 km long streamer, the longest ever deployed. In 2015, he collaborated again with Schlumberger to acquire ultra-
deep seismic reflection data across the Atlantic Ocean to image the base of the lithosphere down to 100 km depth. In
2012, he created the Paris Exploration Geophysics Group, in collaboration with Les Mines ParisTech and industry
partners, and started an international master of research in exploration geophysics, a unique program in France. Singh
has supervised more than 75 PhD students and post-doctoral researchers, published more than 160 papers in SCI
journals, including Nature and Science. He was elected American Geophysical Union Fellow in 2010, awarded the
Grand Prix of the French Academy of Science in 2011, and the European Research Council Advance Grant in 2013.
He was a frequent visitor to the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, La Jolla, CA, and has been sharing his time
