Temperatures in Karachi are expected to soar to a sweltering 41 degrees Celsius on Tuesday, the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) said.The city is set to experience hot and dry weather from Monday till Thursday, an official at the Met Office told Dawn.com.He added that temperatures in Karachi are expected to remain between 38-40C on Monday, soaring to 39-41C on Tuesday.The forecast for Wednesday remains between 38-40C.Although the Met Office has not released a heatwave warning yet, it has advised citizens to drink lots of water and remain indoors.In response to the forecasts, Karachi Mayor Waseem Akhtar on Monday chaired a meeting regarding the expected heatwave in Karachi."Meeting regarding heatwave in Karachi. Keeping in view the forecasts, Emergency Response Centres are being established across the city," the mayor said in a tweet.

UMERKOT: As an intense summer season began, it brought along a deadly disease, spreading fast among the beautiful peacocks of the Thar region.

Within two days, four peacocks have died in the village of Dedh Vero in Tharparkar, while several more were found to be sick.

According to locals and experts, the peacocks are suffering from ‘Ranikhet disease’ – the symptoms being; swelling of the neck and secretion of water from the mouth, while it stops eating and drinking, and dies within three days.It should be noted that during the last two years, over 200 peacocks have lost their lives during each summer, however, no steps have been taken by officials to take care of the situation.A number of other factors could also be responsible for weakening the immune system of the peacocks leading to their deaths: Environmental and weather pattern changes, and shortage of food and water being some of them.

However, only 14m acre feet of water is preserved.The chairman said that due to soil gathering at the base of Tarbela Dam, the storage capacity of the dam has decreased by 36 per cent. Therefore, constructing the Diamer-Bhasha dam is necessary, he added.Tarbela, one of the world’s largest earth-filled dams, was completed in 1978 with the World Bank’s assistance under the Indus Water Treaty signed by Pakistan and India.Owing to continuous silting and sedimentation, the dam’s storage capacity has declined from 9.6 million acres feet (MAF) to about 6.6 MAF.

A teenage servant was reportedly tortured to death on Tuesday, allegedly by his landlady, in Akbari gate area of Lahore, DawnNews quoted police officials as saying.Police officials said that the landlady reportedly tortured 17-year-old Akhtar to death, whereas, the sister of the victim was also beaten up by the suspect."Both the siblings used to work at the residence of Fauzia, who is said to be the daughter of a political personality," said SP City Adil Memon.The parents of the victim have been informed about the tragedy and the sister of the victim, Atiya, has been taken into custody from the residence, he said.The body has been shifted to a hospital for postmortem examination, whereas, further action would be taken upon the arrival of the victim's father from Nankana Sahib, Memon added.SP Memon further said that apparently, the suspect landlady hit the boy with a stick which proved fatal while the family of the landlady claimed that the 17-year-old had consumed something poisonous.

Two men were found dead in a hotel room near Karachi's Cantonment Station, police said on Thursday.Superintendent of Police (SP) Saddar Toqeer Naeem said that the deceased, identified as Faizan, 22, and Shahnawaz, 29, were friends and had not left the room since Wednesday.According to a first information report (FIR) registered at the Frere police station regarding the incident, Faizan was a resident of Karachi, whereas Shahnawaz hailed from Mianwali.Around 3pm today, hotel staff alerted police after they smelled a stench outside the room. When the door was forced open, the two men were found dead inside. Police also found food near their bodies.SP Naeem said there were no torture marks on the bodies of the deceased and expressed suspicion that the two had died after eating something poisonous. He said that the food found in the room would be sent to a laboratory for testing.The bodies were sent to Jinnah Hospital for a post-mortem examination.
