TABERNACLE
TIMES
SEPTEMBER 10th
is
In what is becoming a national movement to help ignite a spiritual awakening in
America, more than 14,000 churches are inviting people to come back to church
on NATIONAL BACK TO CHURCH SUNDAY.
NATIONAL BACK TO CHURCH SUNDAY is based on the simple principle that
82% of people will come to church if invited by a friend,
yet only 2% of church members invite their un-churched friends.
Moreover, 70% of people who don’t go to church have NEVER BEEN ASKED.
We are praying for our SE Guilford community, and that God will prompt you to
invite someone to worship and that hearts will be moved to take a step closer to
Christ.
Back to Church Sunday is the single largest annual community outreach in the
nation, sharing the simple message and mission of inviting everyone in America “Back
to Church.”
Won’t you join us as we welcome our neighbors, friends and loved ones back to
church, and also provide the un-churched an easy way to find a welcoming church in
their community?
We are encouraging every member of TUMC to make it a priority
to attend church on this day…..and to invite someone to come with them!

2 NEW BIBLE STUDY OPPORTUNITIES!
JAMES: LIVING A LIFE OF FAITH
Meets for 8 weeks this Fall
Sundays, 4:30-6:00 p.m.
Led by Warren Ginn and beginning Sunday, Sept. 17
Perhaps of all the books in the New Testament, James most squarely focuses on
results. His pull-no-punches approach to having a mature faith and his preference
for actions over words makes this the perfect study for how to grow in your faith.
This study will take a deep look at some of the themes of this book: the link between
trials and maturity, the good gifts of God, faith, works and Christian concern in a
world of need, the implication of careless and evil words, and the power of prayer.
FOUNDATIONS: A “BACK TO BASICS” PRIMER
Meets for 8 weeks this Fall
Tuesdays, 7:00-8:15 p.m.
Led by Pastor John and beginning Tuesday, Sept. 12
Have you ever felt like you just needed to refresh your understanding of some of the
basics of our faith? This 8-week class (an intro class + 7 sessions) will explore some of
the essential beliefs Christians hold and how those beliefs can interact with our life.
Some of the TOPICS WE WILL COVER will include the nature of Scripture, the life of Jesus,
salvation, worship and prayer.
Presented in a practical and easy-to-grasp perspective,
this class will help us understand some of the founda-
tional doctrines of our faith.
Absolutely no previous Bible study background is necessary
to attend either of these classes!

HONDURAS 2018!
For the past two summers, Tabernacle has taken a
team of youth & young adults to Honduras with a
group based out of Atlanta, GA called MISSIONS IN
ACTION. We have a BIG vision of taking TWO teams to
Honduras in the summer of 2018.
Both teams will work on constructing a new kitchen & concrete work on a new sidewalk
at a school in the village of Estacones. We will also be conducting a daily VBS for the
children of the community. The dates for the two mission trips are July 5-12, 2018 and
July 12-19, 2018.
WOULD YOU LIKE TO GO? The trips are open to youth, young adults, and adults of TUMC.
THERE WILL BE AN INTEREST MEETING ON SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 10 AT 7 PM IN THE
SANCTUARY. Suzanne Rutledge from Missions in Action will be here to answer any
questions you may have. Please contact Savanah at [email protected] for
more information or feel free to come to the interest meeting.
Taking two teams to Honduras will require a lot of fundraising.
We will hold a FUNDRAISING MEETING for the trips on THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 28TH, 7PM.
How can you help? First and foremost, we welcome your prayer support as we plan
and prepare to return to Honduras. We also invite you to
participate in our fundraisers throughout the coming year.
Join us at the ballfield on Friday, October 13 for some tailgat-
ing fun as we celebrate Southeast High School’s Homecoming.
Bring your own food or help support our trip by purchasing
food from several food trucks which will be in our ballfield.
We’ll also be selling live Christmas trees in November and
hosting a Pancake Breakfast in February, among other things.
Donations can be made specifically for the trip - just write “Honduras” in the memo
line of your check.
We are excited about the opportunity for more of our congregation
to join the work already underway in Honduras!

What are your first memories?
How old were you before you thought of God?
When was the first time you heard that God loved you?
What would happen if you found out about God so early in your life that you
never lived a day without believing that God really loves you?
Do you think if a 4 year old really believes that God loved them that it will
make a difference when they are 14 years old or even 24?
What if we could make sure every child believed that “God Made Me, God
Loves Me! Jesus wants to be my friend forever!”?
Tabernacle has a unique opportunity to offer a free ministry to our Preschool
children within our walls and the preschoolers in our larger community.
Starting on Sunday Sept 10th, from 4:30-5:30pm, we will welcome any
child aged 3-5 years old to God’s Lil’ Zoo. This is the first chance to make a
lasting impression about a heavenly father!
The Parables Sunday School Class

authored by Max Lucado. Books will be
available starting September 10th and our

“TOOLBOX”: A (Practical) Parenting Discussion Group
Facilitators: Pastor John & Beth Woods
Sundays from 5:00—6:15pm
(w/ optional fellowship time for those waiting for children/youth)
Beginning Sunday, September 10th
Parenting….it can be the BEST of times and it can be the WORST of times! If you are actively
parenting, you’re invited to join us for a Parenting class-
discussion-support-small group. Lead by Pastor John and his
wife, Beth, we will look for answers to some of our parenting
challenges, struggles and needs.
Intended to be interactive and practical, each night will be
topically themed and applicable to various ages and stages of parenting. Our hope is to find
God’s greatest blessings and joy out of some of life’s most challenging calling.
NOTE: NO PERFECT FAMILIES/PARENTS ALLOWED TO PARTICIPATE IN THIS GROUP!
GRANDPARENTS DAY is Sunday, SEPTEMBER 10th
Whether small town farmers or big city professionals, most grandparents
have influenced our lives for the better. We take this day
to celebrate everything positive they've done for us —
instilling family values and roots, teaching us things no
one else could, and showing us love that knows no bounds.
Grandparents are able to help shape and strengthen our
lives, and many of us have a relationship with because of their example
and witness.
Find a grandparent (find someone else’s if yours aren’t around!) and give
them a word of joyful gratitude for all they mean to so many!

DID YOU KNOW? Tabernacle has its
own Preschool program?
Although “Playschool” falls under the umbrella of
the daycare, it operates only September - May
and serves 3yr olds, and 4-5yr olds.
Amy Ehrhardt is our Playschool Director and lead
teacher for both the 3yr old class and the 4-5yr
old pre-k class. She has been teaching the 3yr
class for 10 years, and the 4-5yr old class for the
last 6 years. Mrs. Tracey Barrett and Mrs. Tina
Phillips are our Playschool teaching assistants.
Tabernacle’s 3yr class meets on Tuesday and
Thursdays mornings from 9am-12pm, and the 4-
5yr old class meets on the other three mornings
each week: on Mondays and Fridays from 9am-
12pm, and on Wednesdays from 9am-1pm.
The Playschool program seeks to encourage
growth and development, and to meet the
physical, social, emotional and spiritual needs of
each child. We believe that every child is a
unique creation of God and strive to nurture his/
her spiritual development through weekly Chapel
time led by Mrs. June, Mrs. Jeannine, and Pastor
John.
We also believe the best learning is done through
active play and experiences, and we endeavor to
enrich each child’s experience with fun classroom
activities, field trips, and fellowship.
The 2017-18 Playschool year is
currently full with twelve 3yr olds and
fifteen 4-5yr olds! If you’d like more
information on this program, please
email Amy Ehrhardt @
RECENTLY BAPTIZED
We celebrate the baptisms of LILLY
STEWART and MEAGAN STEWART
on September 3rd. What a special day
in the life of a church family to witness
two of our own stand before us and
profess their love and loyalty to Jesus
Christ as their Lord. Though young in
age (Lilly is 8, Meagan is almost 7), they
have demonstrated a maturity that
some people never achieve.
Way to go, Lilly and Meagan!
We also welcome and congratulate
their parents, who have joined TUMC,
Dave & Dana Stewart.

ATTENTION College STUDENTS (& PARENTS)! Guess what we need from you? Your college address (snail-
mail), phone number and email address!
If you are the family member of a college student, please
call the church office with this information so we can contin-
ue to be a part of their lives as they embark on a new year of
academic achievement!
GOOD PRAYERS FOR OUR COLLEGE STUDENTS
A number of years ago, one of our friend’s daughters had a “going-off-to-college” shower/send-off.
Beth had the opportunity to go and be a part of the gathering. During part of this party (which, amazingly,
included a short time of prayer and devotion from the Bible), Megan handed out a list of prayer requests
she was asking for as she began this new step in her life.
I’d like to share this prayer list with you and urge you to use it in praying for all of our TUMC college
students as they begin their semester:
• To develop a good relationship with my roommate
‚ To make new friends who are Christians
ƒ Find a good church and campus ministry that will strengthen her faith
„ Safe travel to and from campus
… Make personal devotions a priority
† Work hard at classes
‡ To have good, helpful professors
ˆ To be able to avoid bad influences on campus
‰ To obtain a good work-study job
Statistically, these college-age years are overwhelmingly the most critical time in a young person’s life. More
life-changing decisions are made then than at any other time: one’s initial and perhaps life-long profession,
personal habits and worldview as an adult, and frequently, life-partners.
Let’s pray for all of our college students, particularly that God would grant His wisdom and protective grace
to them. It’s not just the “little children” who are precious in His sight.
With this in mind, we constantly pray for you, that our God may count you worthy of his calling,
and that by his power he may fulfill every good purpose of yours and every act prompted by your
faith. We pray this so that the name of our Lord Jesus may be glorified in you, and you in him,
according to the grace of our God and the Lord Jesus Christ. — 2 Thessalonians 1:11-12 Pastor John

Status of the Christian Life Center Project
You haven’t heard from the Building Committee in some time, but we are continuing to make
progress:
The Building committee met this Spring and asked the Design Consultants to update the
drawings by making minor revisions for current Building Code modifications, LED lighting,
mechanical adjustments, etc.
With the updated drawings, the Building Committee is getting an updated Cost Estimate
completed.
The Building Fund continues to grow through generous gifts from individuals, families and
various Church groups.
We currently have $1.35M in the Building Fund.
The Building Committee will be meeting in September
to review the cost estimate and prepare a financial
plan for presentation to the Congregation in
October.
Please be in prayer for God’s Will to be in every decision
as we move forward with this important project.
