TABERNACLE TIMES August 2017 Then King Nebuchadnezzar leaped to his feet in amazement and asked his advisers, "Weren't there three men that we tied up and threw into the fire?" They replied, "Certainly, O king." He said, "Look! I see four men walking around in the fire, unbound and unharmed, and the fourth looks as a Son of God." Daniel 3:24-25 In his book, Healing for Damaged Emotions, David Seamands writes: The day before my [open heart] surgery, a nurse came into my room to visit. She took hold of my hand, and told me to feel it. 'Now,' she said, 'during the surgery tomorrow you will be disconnected from your heart and you will be kept alive only by virtue of certain machines. When the operation is over, you will awaken in a special recovery room. But you will be immobile for as long as six hours. You may be unable to move, speak, or to even open your eyes, but you will be conscious. During this time I will be at your side, holding your hand exactly as I am doing now. Although you may feel absolutely helpless, when you feel my hand, you will know that I will not leave you.' It happened exactly as the nurse told me, but I could feel the nurse's hand in mine for hours. And that made the difference!” As Daniel's friends went through the fiery furnace, they were not alone. When King Nebuchadnezzar looked into the flames, he saw not three but four men walking about. The fourth man in the fire was the Son of God. What these men lost in the adversity of the fiery furnace were the things that had bound them. What they gained was the certain comfort of God's company. The presence of Christ made the difference. If you are going through a time of “fiery” testing right now, let Christ's presence bring you comfort and peace. He will hold your hand. He will walk with you. And when it's over, you will come out stronger and freer than when you went in. Don't fear the fiery furnace; trust God. I have chosen you and have not rejected you. So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand. Isaiah 41:9-10 Grace and Peace! TABERNACLE

TIMES August 2017

Then King Nebuchadnezzar leaped to his feet in amazement and asked his advisers, "Weren't there three

men that we tied up and threw into the fire?" They replied, "Certainly, O king." He said, "Look! I see four

men walking around in the fire, unbound and unharmed, and the fourth looks as a Son of God."

Daniel 3:24-25

In his book, Healing for Damaged Emotions, David Seamands writes: “The day before my [open heart]

surgery, a nurse came into my room to visit.

Although you may feel absolutely helpless, when you feel my hand, you will know that I will not leave you.'

It happened exactly as the nurse told me, but I could feel the nurse's hand in mine for hours. And that made the difference!”

As Daniel's friends went through the fiery furnace, they were not alone. When King Nebuchadnezzar looked

into the flames, he saw not three but four men walking about. The fourth man in the fire was the Son of

God. What these men lost in the adversity of the fiery furnace were the things that had bound them. What

they gained was the certain comfort of God's company. The presence of Christ made the difference.

If you are going through a time of “fiery” testing right now, let Christ's presence bring you comfort and

peace. He will hold your hand. He will walk with you. And when it's over, you will come out stronger and

freer than when you went in. Don't fear the fiery furnace; trust God.

I have chosen you and have not rejected you. So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed,

for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.

Attention Ladies… Our annual Festival of Tables is Saturday, October 14th, 2017 at 5:30pm, with many great

things in store for you!

You’ll meet several notable Biblical women from both the

New and Old Testaments, and enjoy good food, friends,

and fellowship!

Tables are filling up quickly, so if you would like to reserve a table

to decorate, please call Janice Horney at 336-312-3952.

Hope to see YOU there!

DID YOU KNOW?

The Purpose of the United Methodist Women

The organized unit of United Methodist Women shall be a community of women whose PURPOSE is to know God and to experience freedom as whole persons through Jesus Christ: to develop a creative, supportive, fellowship: and to expand concepts of mission through participation in the global ministries of the church.

If you haven’t been to a U.M.W. meeting lately, you’re missing more than you know! Join this ministry and be a part of the historic strength of our United Methodist Church!

Backpacks Ministry I simply cannot believe it! School starts in just a

few weeks! That means the Backpacks Ministry

for the 2017-2018 school year starts very soon.

Last year we assisted 97 children in 39 families

at Alamance Elementary School. Over 23% of

children in Guilford County do not have enough

food to eat, and North Carolina has the 10th

highest food insecurity rate in the U.S. Our

mission is to provide children, who have little or

nothing to eat over the weekends, with enough

food until they return to school on Monday.

Your continued monetary and/or hands on

support is vital to the continuation of this

ministry. Donations may be sent to the church

and should indicate Backpacks or Meals4-Kids.

If you would like to join us to pack food, please

call or email Diana Hairr @ 336-402-4552,

[email protected],or call Betty Hobbs @

336-697-0757.

UMW Annual Back-To-School

Supply Drive is going on NOW!

Now is the time to start collecting school

supplies for all ages for donation to our area

schools! We are accepting donations of

anything a student would need during the

course of the school year, as the list of things

required gets longer and longer each year, and

many families struggle financially.

Beginning August 6th, there will be a box in the

Commons area for you to deposit your

donations, or you may bring them to the UMW

meeting on Sunday, August 20th @ 2:30pm.

Everyone is invited to the meeting, as

we will have a special program!

(See below.)

EVERYONE, women and men and families, are

invited to this next UMW General Meeting as

guest speaker, Marilyn Foley, will discuss the

serious problems related to the overwhelming

use of social media by students both at school

and at home! Marilyn is a long-time member of

Tabernacle, is a retired educator, and very well-

respected Principal of many Guilford County schools,

and even earned the distinction of Principal of the

Year. Parents and families, we hope you will join the

UMW for this powerful discussion as we believe it

will prove to be very helpful in raising your youth in

today’s internet-connected world.

the U.S. in the 1950s, however, in

Sub-Saharan Africa, malaria con-

tinues to be a top killer. In part-

nership with Imagine No Malaria,

the United Methodist Church can

help beat malaria once and for all.

ATTENTION College STUDENTS

(& PARENTS)!

We are looking for several things

from you:

your college address,

phone number,

and email address!

If you are the family member of a

college student, please call the church

office and give us this information so

we may continue to be a part of their

lives as they embark on a new year

of academic achievement!

CALLING ALL CONFIRMANDS! —

CONFIRMATION TO BEGIN SOON!

In our tradition as youth reach the ages of 11-16,

the church offers a period of learning about the

faith and what it means to be a disciple of Jesus

Christ. This faith study and discipleship program is

called Confirmation. These classes will be taught by

our Pastor. Following Confirmation, those who

desire may make a profession of faith (if they have

not already) and formally join our church.

We will meet ~12 times over the next 9 months.

Some of the topics we’ll look at include Basic

Christian Beliefs, Taking a Good-Book Look (the

Bible), The Heart of the Cross (the life of Jesus),

Descending into Greatness (Mission & Service) and

Caterpillar-ology (new life in Christ). If it looks

“heavy,” don’t worry! We’ll have several lock-ins, a

retreat, and a whole lot of fun!

All interested parents and youth are invited to a

brief information session on Tuesday, August 29th

at the Church at 7:00. If you have any questions,

please call Pastor John @ 336-674-2941 (church)

or 336-480-4550 (cell).

YAM! What is it?

Tabernacle is excited about its new Young Adult Ministry- YAM! This ministry is for

adults in college, out of college, and/or working, and welcomes singles and

married couples without children. Our prayer is that this ministry would be a

gathering where adults in similar life stages can come together to have fun,

support each other, and grow deeper in their relationships with God.

YAM Small Group welcomes all to a free dinner and games every week!

For more info on where and when to meet, please call or text

Youth Minister Savanah Aldridge at 828-406-0537.

CALLING ALL MEMBERS TO

CHILDREN’S SUNDAY SCHOOL!

If you have never been involved with, or haven’t

served for some time in our Children’s Sunday School Programs, we’d love to hear from you!

Our congregation can show their support to the

“regular” adult Sunday School helpers by

volunteering to teach and shepherd during the

months of July and August. We need this support

for our 3rd-5th graders.

If you think you could make a short term

commitment, or want to just test the waters of a

different ministry area, the summer months are a

great opportunity!

Please pray about this and if you are

interested, contact Kim Cripss @

336-207-3073 or by email @

[email protected].

Worship During August 2017

This month through Labor Day, we will turn

back the clock to enjoy an older style order

of worship. We’ll sing some old gospel hymns,

and have a more relaxed style of worship:

this means, WEAR COMFORTABLE CLOTHES

(no suits or ties)! And, invite a friend

or neighbor for this month-long celebration!

Moving Day at Southeast Middle School!

SEMS is again seeking volunteers to assist several

teachers who will be changing rooms, grade levels, and

locations. Volunteers will help move desks, tables,

books, etc., as well as helping to set up classrooms,

and decorating bulletin boards. If you can help, please on August 15th,

anytime between 9am-4pm, please contact Assistant Principal Kevin

Conaway @ 336-674-4280.

Tabernacle U.M.C. Newsletter August 2017

There are lots of opportunities to get involved here at

Tabernacle U.M.C.: from helping in the church office or

assisting in Sunday School to cooking supper for our

UMYF & Kingdom Kids, joining the UM Women, writing

our college students or greeting folks coming into church.

Sometimes those opportunities are highlighted in worship

or in the bulletin. Other times, it may take a little initiative

to call and say you’d love to help out in some specific area.

We’re always looking for ways to help you be in ministry

here. Why not prayerfully ask God to show you where you

can impact our congregation and community for Him?

Join the

“CIRCLE OF 10”

Club!

We have so many new people

visiting our church every Sunday

that it’s easy to forget that being a

“friendly” congregation means

intentionally introducing yourself

to those around you.

The “Circle of 10” Club

is simply a commitment to

greet every person sitting

within 10 feet of you in the

sanctuary on Sundays.

From 2015-2016 Guilford County delivered 102,127 meals to 646 seniors in our community. Unfortunately,

there are 102 neighbors on a waiting list. If you or someone you know (age 60+) is in need of a home delivered
