A visit with Mary Zirkle is always a walk down memory lane. She can tell delightful sto-ries of her brothers and sisters, of neighbors, of fellow church goers; she even remem-bers when the church was on Division Street and her Sunday School class was in thechoir loft. Yet, Mary will tell you that she doesnt really have an interesting life or any

good stories, but this teacher of 40 + years is the consummate educator through sto-ries.From the moment I walked in the door in late April, Mary embraced me with a warmhug and gracious greeting. I knew that her mother had died at a young age, leaving her, the olderdaughter in the family, to take charge of cooking, cleaning and washing at an early age. All of thisshe did while commanding her four older brothers and one younger sister, while completing her ed-ucationall the way to a masters degree in teaching! One would think that Mary should be a bitter person after enduring so much work and grief at ayoung age, but nothing is farther from the truth. Her life exudes the grace and compassion of Godwho has always been by her side. No matter the story in her life, she always brings me back to thepoint that God has never been a tyrant with her. God filled her life with opportunity and grace atevery moment.

Mary never married, but she is the first to tell you that she had hundreds of children! She consid-ered every one of her students a gift; each one was special. After her stories of her mothers focus

on each of her children individually, I can see that the apple did not fall far from the tree. From hermother, Mary learned that everyone who comes into her presence is a gift from God to be cher-ished and loved. I never had the opportunity to sit in one of her classes in Toledo Public Schools orin Sunday School, but I can imagine she would have been one of my favorite teachers!Even today, as I sit and talk with her, a light shines within Mary that reminds me that all of what isgood and right in the world does exist. The bad news that wants to drag me down gets pushedaside for the time we are together. The twinkle in her eyes reminds me that goodness, and maybea little honest orneriness, exist in one person in such a way that causes me to trust in God.Mary Zirkles faith is deep and broad; her love of life comes from drinking at its deep well drinkingin the good and trusting in Gods grace for the more challenging times. If you take time to visit withher, you, too, will see what I have known, and what Mary says so eloquently: If God loves some-body, why should I think I could be any different?Thank you, Mary for allowing me to share in your life with you. Thank you for your faithful, graceful

and compassionate example of trust in God!

    Peace,

    Pr Tim

    DEACON SUPPORT TEAM

Included in the last few months Trumpets were articles about your deacons. If you were notaware of your deacon, do you now know her or him? We hope you have a sincere interest ingetting to know your deacon as a present and future friend and confidant. Our Pastor is thebest resource with whom to discuss questions and concerns, but your deacon can also serve

you in a similar way.Deacons are not exempt from having a deacon of their own. At times we need someone willing to lis-

ten and we turn to our deacon. As mentioned the last several months, deacons meet bi-monthly to discuss a variety of topics, but

more importantly we are available for you when your needs might require someone to talk with other thanPastor Tim occasionally.

We are grateful for the opportunity to serve the members of Zions Lutheran Church and we encourageyou to reach out to your deacon whenever the need arises.

If you are unsure about your deacon, please call the church office for assistance.Dick Anderson
