The summer is quickly moving forward and I would hope that those Members staying home at Moss Creek are enjoying all of our available amenities. The Golf experience with its South Course renovation is im-proving; the Pool and Fitness Center, as well as the Marina are experi-encing an increase in summer usage. With a few months of experi-ence, we have identified some enhancements that we can make to the new kayak launch. A quote has been solicited from Steadfast Marine for improvements to the existing dock. Adding more deck space and addi-tional ramps, enclosing the rectangular holes, and installing non-slip strips are some of the items currently under consideration. As of August 26, Hargray has received 250 Member requests for com-munications system audits. They have completed 227 or 91% of those received. If you are experiencing any communication problems, please contact Hargray or Suzanna Johnston at 836-6116 in Administration to register for a complete review and update of your home telephone, tele-vision and internet connections. The cell tower company that we received an offer from was recently written up in the Wall Street Journal as one of the top five tower compa-nies in operation. We are awaiting information from our attorney regard-ing the tower’s location. The revenue to be received is consistent with all of their other locations. The Gatehouse Task Force and Administration continue to work with the Land Planner, the Engineer and the Architect in finalizing the plans. We anticipate that Architectural Plans for the proposed structure and its location will be available this month, and then released to the Member-ship. We also have a preliminary plan for the Dog Park which will be located within the Equestrian Center property. It will include one acre divided for large and small dogs. A shelter will be built to house a restroom and the perimeter will be landscaped. The Dog Park Task Force has been working with the Dog Park Committee members in bringing this project to completion. The Board is still reviewing information from the Bostwick Committee regarding the re-development and improvements at the Bostwick area. This project, as well as the Causeway, are both major undertakings that required additional planning information. At a recent meeting with the Marsh Group, held at the law office of Tom Davis with Senator Chip Campsen, Representative Shannon Erickson, Representative Wes Newton and other dignitaries, we discussed and solicited their support for FEMA reimbursement under the Stafford Act. That is, to cover debris removal from private communities and/or private roads. We also discussed Insurance Premiums for Flood Insurance and the potential rising costs for such coverage.

Dominick Bonanno

MCOA Board President

With regard to our financial status for the seven

months ended July 2013, revenue is slightly down by

approximately $17,000 and expenses are also down

by approximately $222,000. Bottom line, we had a

net surplus of $1,198,000 which is over budget by

$505,000. This includes Certificate Income of

$966,000 which is over budget by $300,000. Again,

our financial position continues to be positive after

seven months of operations.

Picnic in the ParkPicnic in the ParkPicnic in the ParkPicnic in the Park

Sunday, September 29, 2013 5:00pm DJ /

6:00pm The Headliners

Join us for another fantastic evening with live music, dancing in the street, delicious bbq and sides provided by Hargray Communica-

tions and MCOA. Beer and wine will be sponsored by Dunes Marketing. As always, you are welcome to bring your own picnic, bever-

ages, table, and chairs. So, invite your friends and family to join you for this great night. This is complimentary to all Moss Creek Mem-

bers and their guests. However, we do need to give them a final count for food preparation. Please call Melissa at 836-6121 or

email [email protected] if you plan on partaking in the buffet. The final count will be given to Hargray on Monday,

September 23, at 5:00pm.

We will also be hosting a Real Estate “Open House” on Sunday, September 29, from 1-4pm. If you would like to attend the Open House,

please check-in at the Real Estate office to receive a map and current information of homes on the tour.

On Tuesday, September 10, at 4:00pm, you are invited to the Clubhouse to meet the candidates

who are running for the MCOA Board of Directors in the October election. Each candidate will

have five to seven minutes to present his or her thoughts to the Membership. Once the candi-

dates have discussed their position, a short question and answer session will be held, followed

by concluding comments. If Members are unable to attend the meeting, they are invited to sub-

mit questions for the candidates ahead of time, and time permitting, they will be read by the

meeting coordinator. Please submit your written questions to Suzanna Johnston at

[email protected] or drop them off at the Administration Office.

To review the board nominees’ bio and their questions and answers, please review the July and

August Advocate Newsletters on the Moss Creek website.

Cliff Charnes

General Manager/COO

September is going to be a busy month, but before we go there, we are pleased to welcome Payman Shamlou to Moss Creek as our new Controller. He comes to us with more than twenty years of accounting experience in both public and corporate accounting. Payman started with us August 5 and is quickly acclimating to MCOA.

Now for September. The first event to highlight is the Meet the Candidates night September 10 at the Clubhouse at 4 p.m. Se-lecting your Board Members is a very important function of the Membership, so come see them and hear what they have to say.

Once each summer we open fishing in Moss Creek to the em-ployees and staff who work for MCOA. That will be on Septem-ber 22 this year, so if you see some of our crew wetting a line, please toot your horn and wave. They will be most appreciative.

Then on September 24, we will have a brief open house at the Fitness Center. Summer is ending, winter is coming, please come out and learn of ways you can be healthier. Our staff is top shelf and always ready and willing to work with you.

Randy Connelly

Chief of Security

This month, I would like to point out the most common violations that I observe from Security Notifications that I forward to Moss Creek Owners Association.

* Speeding: I must say there has been a substantial decrease and I applaud the Membership for their efforts to maintain slower speeds making Moss Creek a safer place to live and work. Keep your guests informed of our 27 mph limit to continue keeping Moss Creek safe.

* Truck, trailer or commercial vehicle parked after 9:00pm to 7:00am: These vehicles must be parked entirely in your garage with the garage door closed. In order to assist should you experience an issue with this rule, Moss Creek provides parking for these vehi-cles at the Administration Office and behind the Tennis Center. Remember, these locations are temporary and vehicles should be picked up by 7:00am each day. These are not extended parking areas.

* Parking on common area for more than three hours: I know with the limited parking, occasionally, you may need to park street-side every now and then. If you have a legitimate reason please give Security a call and let us know.

Remember, you are responsible for your guests’ actions within the Community, so make sure they obey our rules as well. Besides speeding and parking issues, outside guests have been found fishing without their host and performing contractual work at other resi-dences.

September 29, is a very important Sunday. The realtors will hold their fall open house that afternoon, followed by Picnic in the Park starting at 5:00pm at Bostwick. The real estate mar-ket in Moss Creek is very healthy and we always want to put our best foot forward, so again, see a stranger that day, smile and wave, they may become your new neighbor. Again this year, Hargray Communications will be feeding us bar-b-cue; no cost, but we do need a count, please see the flyer in this Advo-cate. Dunes Marketing, our real estate tenant at the gate, will be sponsoring beer and wine. It is great fun, please plan to attend. Finally, September 14 and 15, we will host the Peggy Kirk Bell Girl’s Golf Tour with a field of 51 juniors ranging in age from 12 to 18. I bring this up because Heidi needs volunteers, but also on a personal note. The LPGA played a tournament in 1959 on the old Donald Ross course in French Lick, Indiana. Peggy Kirk Bell played in that event, and I was her caddy for the week. She was and is a great lady, do you suppose she will remember me?

Director of Golf Maintenance

When we completed the certification for the Audubon last March, we did not stop with our continued education and environmental approach here at Moss Creek. The work that has been done since our certifica-tion include the plantings on Fording Island and the addition of bird boxes near the preserve between #17 and #18 South. I am now involved in a committee that is helping a non-profit organiza-tion, Experience Green, put on a symposium in Hilton Head in October called “Sustainability in Golf…Beyond the Green.” Moss Creek has been chosen for a case study for a company called E-par. E-par is an environmental management system for golf courses. This program helps with sustainability at golf maintenance, the Golf Shop, and the Clubhouse. We are the only one in the Carolinas with this system. We will be testing E-par for the next three years with no charge to Moss Creek. This continues to show our commitment to what makes Moss Creek so special, nature.

Hargray has been working diligently toward completing in-home visits with senior technicians throughout Moss Creek. The purpose of these visits is to perform a complete inspection and certification of the Har-gray communication equipment, test and troubleshoot internal wiring, and assess the overall performance of the services Hargray is providing to Moss Creek. The Community has been divided into four regions for scheduling purposes. Currently, there have been 250 Class A inspections scheduled of which 227 com-pleted, 24 homes required rewiring with most completed. Approximately 175 follow up calls after the in-spections were completed with minimal return visits. If you would like to be added to the list for a complimentary Hargray visit, please contact Suzanna Johns-ton in the Admin Office at 836-6116 or [email protected].

In support of Patriot Golf Day, Tom Logue and I are going to play a marathon day of golf from 7:00am to 7:00pm on Mon-day, September 16, on the South Course. Tom and I want to thank the Members who have already donated; at the time of writing this article we are already up to raising $4,000; we hope to hit $10,000! Please contact the Golf Shop if you would like to sponsor us on a per hole basis or donate a lump sum. All donations are being charged to your Member ac-count and MCOA will be writing one check to the Folds of Honor Foundation. We plan on playing eight rounds each or a mere 288 holes. Members are more than welcome to come out to the course and cheer us on while we are playing. Patriot Golf Day was sparked by the vision and dedication of Major Dan Rooney, an F-16 fighter pilot, a PGA Golf Profes-sional, a USGA Member, and a real-life hero. Fund raising from Patriot Golf Day activities supports the Folds of Honor Foundation which provides post-secondary education schol-arships for children and spouses of military men and women killed or disabled while serving our great nation. Over $12.8 million dollars has been raised over the past five years for scholarships. The Professional Staff competed in the 39th Hilton Head Open hosted at Colleton River August 10 & 11. The HHO is a two-day stroke play event open to HH Chapter PGA profes-sionals and amateurs who live or own property in Beaufort

Have you checked the condition of your grips lately? Worn out grips can cause your hands to come loose on the club and incorrectly rotate the club face at impact. Having the correct grip size is also very impor-tant in correctly squaring the club face. The Golf Shop offers a variety of grips and re-gripping service. We can also help you determine what size grip is best for you.

country. Amateur, John Patterson, won the event with terrific scores of 62 & 68 to win over Secession Golf Club assistant professional, David Rogers, by two shots. Moss Creek’s, Tom Logue, faired the best from our staff shooting 72/76 for a tie for 21st out of 96 players. Tom is to also be congratulated for running a terrific tournament. Not only did he play in the event, but Tom currently serves as the HHI Chapter Tourna-ment Director and he was also running the event. Outside service attendant, David Jaroszynski, passed the Player’s Ability Test (PAT) on Saturday, July 27, at Myrtle Beach National/West Course with scores of 74 & 72. The PAT is a 36-hole tournament where participants must shoot a set target score or lower to successfully pass. Passing the PAT allows David to register with the PGA of America to be-gin the Professional Golf Management program. David is also a graduate of Professional Golfer’s Career College lo-cated in Bluffton. Please join me in congratulating David and you will also begin to see David working occasional shifts in the Golf Shop to gain inside golf operation experience. The Golf Shop Professional Staff is looking forward to a great fall schedule of events. Annual Mixed Member-Guest invita-tions have been emailed. Please call if you did not receive one and sign up quickly. This will be a great event to share with friends.

Callaway Demo Day

Twilight Golf

Join the Golf Professional Staff and Callaway for a great day in the sun with great music on Thursday, September 26, from 12-4pm.

Please make a club fitting appointment by calling the Golf Shop at 837-2231.

This month’s Twilight held on Friday, August 16, was a Four Person Step-Aside Scramble. Congratulations to the team of Sharon & Stan Potter and Joanne & Bill Ritchie for winning the back nine flight. Winning the front nine flight was the team of Fran & Arnold Gellman and Kathe & Dick Obrig.

Is Putter Fitting Needed? Today golfers get fit for drivers, irons, wedges even golf balls, yet the most important club in the bag, the putter, is being neglected. As a result local PGA Professional, Pete Popovich has come up with the GPA Putter Fitting System and Putter Fitting Days. The Putter Fitting Days are done very similar to driver fitting days only with putters. His mission is simple, to make you a better putter!

Custom Putter Fitting Day Saturday, September 28, 2013 / 9:00am – 5:00pm $50.00 Fitting Fee (Normally $100) Please call the Golf Shop to make an appointment. Allow for 45 minutes for fitting with a few minutes to ask questions. Bring your own putter!

Tom Logue was custom fit with Pete two weeks ago. He struggled with putts from two feet to ten feet, either closing the face or open-ing the face, lining up too far to the right, not being able to see his putting line. Since the putter fitting, he has been much more con-sistent and the scores are the proof.

His New stats: 33 ½ Putter Length, 73* Lie Angle, 2* Loft, 9” from the ball, ball position-back of the ball should be even with the throat His Old stats: 35” Putter Length, 71* Lie Angle, 4* Loft, ‘no clue’ distance from the ball, ball position forward in stance-off left heel

Pete’s Custom Putter Fitting process fits for: Length, Lie and Loft, 5 Eye Position, Distance from the ball, Ball Position, Backstroke/Forward Stroke Length, Rhythm & Tempo, Biomechanics & Stroke Mechanics, and more!

September 19th—21st—Club Championships (Doubles)

September 26th—28th—Club Championships (Mixed)

October 3rd—5th—Club Championships (Singles)

Mark Your Calendar:

Club Championships Registration for the Club Championships has begun! The dates for each event are as follows: Doubles Sept. 19-21, Mixed Doubles Sept. 26-28, and Singles Oct. 4-6. This is the MCTC premiere event of the year. Registration will close on Tues-day Sept. 10. The Kick-Off Party will be held at the Tennis Center on Thursday, September 12. This year’s Club Champion-ships will also feature a Social Flight. This division will play a non-elimination format and all participants are guaranteed a minimum number of matches against different opponents. Mixed Doubles Team Competing at States The 7.0 Mixed Doubles team, captained by Sonja Wesseler, will be competing in Florence, SC the weekend of Sept. 13. They were able to qualify for the state tournament by winning the Hilton Head Island local league over the summer. Tennis Tip: Return of Serve Every point in tennis starts with a serve and a return. We tend to practice our serves often, but forget to practice our returns as well. We need to make sure we have a shorter backswing on our return serves, especially against a harder serve. One way to help with this is to make sure to extend your arms while you are waiting in your ready position. This will shorten your backswing and allow you to make more consistent returns.

Tennis Parking Lot Repaving—Rescheduled

The parking lot at the Tennis Center was scheduled to be re-paved the week of August 26, but has been post-poned to begin Tuesday, September 3. We apologize for the confusion and appreciate your understanding.

Fitness News Amber Reynolds

Personal Trainer

I love seeing people come into the gym, who are dedicated to their workout. They come in a couple of times a week. They hop on the elliptical for 20 minutes and then hit the weights for 30 minutes. They’ve been doing this for weeks, months or years even. Having a routine can be great! You know what to do, how many reps and it’s comfortable. How do you know when your routine is in need of a tune up? Here are a few reasons to switch up your workout:

You’ve hit a weight loss plateau: Our bodies are smart ma-chines. When they are challenged, they are forced to adapt. However, if you do the same routine, your body figures out how to expend as little energy as possible to complete this activity that it sees you’re doing repeatedly. You’re bored with your workout: If you find yourself count-ing down the minutes or reps until your workout is done, then it’s time to switch it up. You don’t want to get to the point where you dread your workout and are only giving marginal effort.

8

Prevent overuse injuries: When you do the same motion again and again, you can get a repetitive strain injury. For example, runners see a lot of repetitive strain injuries such as runner’s knee, plantar fasciitis, IT band syndrome, etc. By mixing it up, it gives your body time to repair some things and you a chance to work on other areas. Keep your brain healthy: Exercise helps keep your mind sharp. Learning new things is even better! The more engaged you are in an activity the better it is for you. There are a ton of ways to change up your workout. Try tak-ing a new class, for example. Even by changing the order in which you do exercises can be beneficial. If you tend to walk at a steady pace, try doing some interval sprints. Not quite sure how to switch up your routine or out of fresh ideas to try? Taking some time with a personal trainer can help you find a new routine and make sure you’re doing it safely and effectively.

Clubhouse News

Jim O’Connor

Clubhouse Manager

I always have a reminder in my calendar each month to write my monthly Advocate article. I write them a year out when I get my brand new planner and every August I put that my September article is about the upcoming holidays. I know it is hard to believe, but we have to get information out 90 days from the events if possible, which for some of them, is right around the corner.

As always, you will start to see an abundance of flyers make their way into your email boxes. First off will be Halloween. You will be having two fes-tivities like last year, the first being a ghoulish Halloween at the Clubhouse on October 30 and the second will be our annual trunk-or-treat event at Bostwick on the 31st. Melissa will be sending out reservation information for both events shortly if you have not already received. Our next event is Thanksgiving for which we have already started taking reservations for. We have two buffet times 12:00pm and 2:30pm.

Alright, now we are in the nitty gritty, we are talking about Tree Lighting. We will again be having our two tree lightings one on December 4 and the other on December 5. I do not want to get into a lot of details, because the reservation forms are in this Advocate. One thing that has changed is that we will not be accepting faxes this year. It appears that sometimes faxes do not always come over in the best quality and it makes them hard to read. Who knew right! This year because the calendar works out favora-bly, we have a week between our Tree Lightings and our Annual Dinner Dance. Our Dinner Dance will once again feature The Headliners and the reservations will start being accepted on September 16.

Ok, now for the one that everyone has been waiting for NEW YEARS EVE. This year’s event will be held like last year on December 31. We will again be having Casino Night and a DJ, so Moss Creek can rock the night away. This event sold out last year and I am still receiving comments how great it was. Because we are anticipating another sell out, we will be holding a raffle for the event. We will be sending out reservation forms for tables and we will be holding the raffle the first week in November for people to make their plans.

This brings me to my last order of business - Trivia. Towards the end of the trivia calendar year we were getting again a lot of special requests, which on a plated dinner for 200, is hard to do. We decided to try a buffet for the first Trivia in September. We received a lot of comments and sug-gestions and decided to let you, the Trivia player, vote on it. For the first Trivia in September, we will be having a plated salad, filet mignon and des-sert. You will be asked to vote on a few options for future Trivia events. We will tally the votes and will go on from there beginning in October.

September 11th Service

Wednesday, September 11, 2013 8:30am Bostwick Flagpole

We will have memorable music, moment of silence, and readings to show respect for

those who lost their lives in the tragic events of 9/11.

Thursday, September 26, 2013 5:30—7pm Buffet / 7pm Trivia

Guess what time it is . . .it’s Trivia Time!! Team cap-tains, it is time to get your tables with Member’s names and account numbers in to the Clubhouse. Our new buffet format for Trivia has sparked some lively responses. In light of the mixed reactions, we have determined that a democratic process is in or-der to arrive at the meal solution that suits the major-ity. At the September 26 Trivia Night, we will be serving a filet of beef with the alternative chicken, brown rice, and vegetable substitution for dietary re-strictions. At this event, every participant will be asked to cast their vote. The final plan will be de-cided by the selection that receives the most votes.

Over the last few months, I’ve tried to introduce you to our culinary team through some of the fantastic contributions that they bring to Moss Creek. With summer’s endless humidity seemingly finally relenting, soon enough we’ll be talking football and eating some of the warmer comfort foods that make the fall and winter season so inviting. It seems like the perfect time to share Mike Boccella’s Chicken Noodle Soup. Mike is originally from Philadelphia and you’ll find that this version has a few twists common in household of Italian heritage such as Mike’s (and mine!). Most of you have probably seen Mike on property somewhere as he is truly our all-around utility player. He works all stations of the main Clubhouse kitchen, is by far our best meat carver, and also helps oversee operations at Mackay’s Creek Grill. His background also includes experience in the supply side of the restaurant busi-ness which is always a helpful perspective.
