If you are planning to go north or pursue extensive travel this summer, don’t forget to update your contact in-formation, including your cell phone number. Even if you have a friend or neighbor periodically checking your home, Security needs to know how to reach you, as well as a local contact or neighbor who may have a key. One of the benefits of living in Moss Creek is you can have Security check your home daily as they drive through the Community. There is no charge for this service, you just have to complete the form which you can find on the Moss Creek website under Security and then “Out of Town Card” tab. At the recent Board meeting on May 21, 2014 the MCOA Board made several decisions. Vicki Jourdan made a presentation to the Board on behalf of a group of Members who were “opposed to the paving of the wilderness trail that circles around the ponds and wetlands.” Vicki Jourdan and others had collected the signature of over 200 MCOA Members. The MCOA Board approved a motion to leave the Blue Heron Sanctuary as it is. If you enjoy walking in a natural environment and have not included the Blue Heron walking trails in your routine, I encourage you to enjoy a half mile self-directed walk. A brochure is available where the inner trail begins off of Victoria Circle which identifies many of the plants. Please note that bikes are prohibited on the boardwalk at the wilderness end of the pond. The MCOA Tennis Facility Advisory Committee presented a proposal to have a sun shade installed over the benches along court 7 which was approved by the Board. The new structure has been contracted with Coastal Canvas, who has done all of the other canvas structures in Moss Creek. Under the leadership of Ten-nis Pro, Tom Ruth, we have more active tennis players and thus more tennis events. The USTA events always draw a group of spectators and the sun shade will provide more enjoyable viewing throughout the hot summer months. The Friday night “Tennis Pro League” event on May 23rd drew an estimated crowd of 300, including more than 125 from outside of Moss Creek. The Master Plan Task Force has been meeting for several months and is identifying all available common and open space areas within Moss Creek and the permitted uses for the property. A subcommittee of the Master Plan Task Force has visited eight other communities in the greater Hilton Head area to see how they have designed waterfront dining facilities. Another subcommittee is studying the demographic trends of homebuyers over the next ten to fifteen years and the Long Range Planning committee is compiling information on existing and planned amenities in the area communities with whom we compete for homebuyers. Last, but not least, this spring the Master Plan Task Force has continued to review all the available options for a dog park. We have considered a number of locations in designated “open space” which could accommodate a dog park, but in every case nearby neighbors have objected primarily because they don’t want to look at a fence or hear dogs bark. On the other side of the discussion, many of our Members own dogs and want an area where their dogs can exercise while the owners enjoy camaraderie with other dog owners. So, the Master Plan Task Force has come full circle. After review of potential long term improvements to our waterfront area at Bostwick, the Board has approved engaging design professionals to evaluate landscaping the Bostwick Cir-cle into an attractive park for Community events along with an area for a well-defined dog park, enclosed with shrubs and other attractive landscaping rather than a fence. We want a design that is attractive whether you approach the circle from Moss Creek Drive, Cedar Lane, the pool, or the Bostwick Pavilion. The Master Plan Task Force is also in discussion with leaders of the dog owners group about their needs for the dog park. The decision whether or not to keep the dog park in the Bostwick Circle will be made by the Board after we have a chance to review the drawings and the estimated costs. The Master Plan Task Force plans to provide an in-terim report of its findings at the October Members’ Meeting.

Rally For the Cure: Golf Tournament, Raffle, Silent Auction, & Dinner

Sunday, October 5, 2014 Our Rally raises money for breast cancer programs through Susan G. Komen. All of our fundraising dollars will remain local through the Komen Affiliate Network. If you are not playing golf, please join us for the Dinner and Silent Auction. There are many opportunities for volunteering before and during this event. Volunteers do not need to be golf-ers. It is a wonderful way to meet fellow Moss Creekers and be part of this worthwhile event. If you are inter-ested, please contact Mary Jane Reeves at 836-3355. Also, Silent Auction items are needed. In the past, art, jewelry, photography, cooking skills, boat cruises, etc. have been donated. Please contact Pat Coghlan at 837-5414 if you would like to make a donation. MCOA Kayak Loaners

Moss Creek recently purchased 2 doubles and 4 single kayaks for Members and guests to bor-row. MCOA also provides life jackets and pad-dles for these boats (upon availability). Contact the Fitness Center (836-6160) for infor-mation or to reserve the boats (can reserve 2 weeks in advance). Everyone must check in at the Fitness Center and sign a waiver of liability before heading out on the water.

At the end of May, we bid a fond farewell to our Water Oak Utility Manager, James Buckner. His retirement brings to a close a 38-year career with the Community of Moss Creek. James has been with Moss Creek since the beginning of the development. He devoted nearly his entire career to managing the utilities at Moss Creek, and he witnessed all of the ups and downs the Community has experienced over the years. We will certainly miss his experienced leadership in the operation of the water and sewer utilities, and we will also miss his fellowship and sense of humor that those working with him have enjoyed over the years. Early this month, Jan Alpert sent a letter inviting Members to make a contribution to a retirement gift for James. We plan to present the award to James at a small reception in his honor later this month. We wish James and his wife, Mary, many years of happiness in their retire-ment.

If you are active in golf at Moss Creek you know that we hosted several golf events in recent weeks that brought guests to our Club from a variety of other golf facilities. From all reports, our Golf and Clubhouse teams did a great job in making these events enjoy-able for our Members and their guests. In particular, I want to note the positive comments we received regarding the condition of the golf courses. At the Green Committee meeting in May, committee Members noted that they heard several very complimentary re-marks about our golf courses from guests at the recent events. Kudos to Mitchell, Gil, Wes, Kyle and the entire golf maintenance team on a job well done. They work hard every day to provide good quality playing conditions that Members can enjoy and be proud to share with their guests.

Speaking of playing conditions, the golf maintenance schedule for the next few weeks includes aerification work on both golf courses and a tee renovation project on the driving range. The North Course will be closed the week of June 2nd for aerification of the greens and tees. The practice putting green will be closed for aerification on June 9th. The South Course will be closed the week of June 16th for aerification of the tees, greens and fairways on that course. The driving range project will involve re-sodding the tee in two phases; half of the tee area will be re-sodded starting June 9th and the second half will be re-sodded beginning July 21st. We are doing the work in two phases so that we can keep half of the range open for Members throughout the process. We appreciate your patience and cooperation as we complete these projects over the next several weeks.

At the Annual Meeting, I mentioned that open and effective communication was a goal of our management team. Of course, com-munication is a two-way process; it is important that we encourage Members to communicate with the Board and management, and that we provide channels to facilitate this process. To that end, we plan to utilize short surveys and questionnaires from time to time to give Members the opportunity to weigh-in on planning issues, projects or just to gauge how we are doing. We have two short sur-veys that we will send via email in the next few weeks. One is from our Master Plan Task Force and one is from our House & Grounds Committee. I encourage you to respond to each when you receive the email. If you do not have email, please contact the Administrative Office and we will get you a hard copy of each survey to complete.

We have a new fleet of kayaks available for loan to Members and guests. MCOA has provided loaner kayaks for some time, how-ever, the mix-and-match fleet of donated and used kayaks was getting worn and some felt that they were not well suited to novice kayakers. So, at the urging of several Members, the Board decided to replace the used kayaks with six new, wide vessels that are more stable in the water. We have four singles and two tandem kayaks in our fleet. That’s all for this month. Have Fun!

Community News

I just read that the first hurricane in the Pacific “Amanda” is packing winds at almost 155mph. With the Pacific Coast Hurri-cane Season starting May 15, it may set the table for our At-lantic Coast Season to be an active one. I will be attending a Hurricane Meeting the first week of June in Bluffton and will report back to Moss Creek any changes that we may be faced with, especially with the Evacuation Routes.

Watch for the Moss Creek Hurricane Seminar date that we normally schedule each year early in the season. I expect to set a date early next week and urge any and all Members, especially our new Members, to attend.

Evacuation Planning Steps: • Where would you go? To get out of harms way, you

should be prepared to go north or west. Pick a destination in each direction. Factor in stop-and-go driving which will greatly increase the amount of time you are on the road and gas use.

• Where would you stay? If you end up in a shelter, only very basic needs will be provided and could be in short supply. Prepare an evacuation supply kit. We will dis-cuss this at our seminar.

• What would you take with you? Food, water, clothes, cash, important documents and prescription medications. It is recommended that you plan to be self-sustaining for at least three days.

The lagoons in Moss Creek are full for the first time in many months. Many factors contribute to this status. Rainfall has been above normal over the last 12 months and the ground water has returned to normal levels. The lagoons around Moss Creek are treated by a licensed contractor every three to four weeks. Each lagoon has different characteristics and therefore is treated differently. Lagoon depths, widths, and vegetation are major parts of what our contractor reviews before setting up a program to maintain our lagoon system in a healthy way for our Members and wildlife. What is done at one lagoon is not necessarily right for others. Also remember, the water system is a living environment that continues to change all of the time. Some questions have come to us about using foun-tains and bubblers to keep our water cleaner by moving water. The foun-tains and bubblers move water near the area they are located. They do provide oxygen to the lagoon system, but they do not stop algae blooms and other outbreaks. We do have bubblers and fountains in other lagoons in Moss Creek, but they are placed in those areas for different reasons. Between our programs and nature, the lagoons are naturally healthy here in Moss Creek.

Twilight Golf May Recap

There were 75 players in Twilight Golf Friday, May 9, 2014. The format was a Four-Person Four-Club Scramble and was played on the North Course. It was a beautiful sunny afternoon and

we thank you for playing.

Ladies Nine Exchange Day

The Ladies Nine was scheduled to host an Exchange Day on Thursday, May 1, 2014 on the South Course. Ninety-two players were scheduled to participate, but Mother Na-ture was the first winner as she decided to rain cancelling the golf. This did not deter the ladies from having fun! All enjoyed cocktails, great camaraderie, and a fantastic din-ner by Chef Lenny. Prizes were drawn from the pool of teams who were sched-uled to play and non-winners had a chance at great prizes in a raffle. Thank you for participating and a special thanks to Carmela Juenger and Linda Eberly for organizing the event.

WGA 2-Day Member-Guest

The 2014 WGA “Flights of Fancy” Spring Member-Guest Invitational was held on the North and South Course May 7 and 8. There were 80 partici-pants in the field and the format was Two Best Balls of Four with Stableford Scoring. The weather was beautiful, the golf was great, and both lunches from Chef Lenny were delicious. A wonderful time was had by all and everyone is already looking forward to next year’s event. Overall Gross Champions were Susan Carlson, Marinell Altizer, Donna

Stamey & Cheri Kish with 130 points. Overall Net Champions were Heather Martin, Mary Jane Reeves, Teresa Eller and Brenda Christiansen with 188 points.

It is hard to believe summer is upon us, but here it is! The Professional Staff would like to thank the Members who partici-pated in tournaments, demo days, golf clinics, and short game schools this spring. We had a great time and hope you see improvements in your game! Junior Golf Clinics will be held weekly on Thursdays from 10:00-11:00am beginning June 19. The clinic fee is $10.00 per junior. Please note, there will be no clinic on Thursday, July 3, as the Golf & Tennis Junior Camp will be in session. Other golf fun this summer includes ‘Family Golf Nights’. This is a great opportunity for parents and/or grandparents to bring jun-iors out for a complimentary hour of instruction and games (for both the juniors and adults) followed by playing a few holes on the course. After golf you can enjoy dinner in the Clubhouse; juniors 18 years of age and younger who participate in Family Golf Nights with an accompanied adult, are served complimentary chicken fingers and fries. Family Golf Nights are June 20, July 11 and August 1. Register for junior golf clinics and Family Golf Nights by calling the Golf Shop, 837-2231; sign-up sheets are also posted on the bulletin board by the Golf Shop. To beat the heat in June and July, we will be holding open play 8:30am shotgun starts on one of the courses Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday of each week. Special events may occasionally alter this schedule. Moss Creek is participating in the local private club summer reciprocal program. This program is open to Activity Fee Mem-bers only and provides you the opportunity to play other private clubs in the area for minimal fees; all starting time arrange-ments must be made through the Professional Staff. When working on your game, I recommend you keep the time length to no more than 20 minutes on any one given skill. For example, if you want to hit drivers, be target oriented and do not hit for more than 20 minutes. After 20 minutes practice wedge shots. After 20 min-utes of wedges, practice putting. Another great way to practice is pretend you are playing different holes. Hit a tee shot to a given tar-get, then imagine what the second shot would be and hit to another target. If you miss the target, imagine the short game shot you would have to hit next. Sport studies show quality random practice leads to better on-course performance than repetitive practice.

Memorial Day Tourn.

First Flight was based off of 15 holes, Second – Fourth flights were 14 holes due to the thunder storms. All shots were as they fell on the score cards off of the mem-ber tee rating. All ties were broken by the first nine played within those two score cards.

The Men’s Member-Member was con-ducted on the North and South golf courses. The format was One Best Ball of Two Net. Low Net on day one was Hal Bell and George Romeo with 58 and three teams tied for Low Gross on day one with even par 72 (Steven Soucy-Steve Murphy, Sam Nutty-John Jour-dan, Bob Fulton-Charlie Boles). Con-gratulations to our Overall Gross Cham-

pionships, Steven Soucy-Steve Murphy 72-71=143 and our Overall Net Champions, Hal Bell-George Romeo. Low Net on day two was Tony Karnas and Paul Resetar with 54.

Men’s Member-Member

Men’s Day Shoot Out

The 2014 Men’s Day Spring Shoot-Out was played on Friday, May 2, 2014 on the first five holes of the North Course. Qualifying for the Men’s Day Spring Shoot-Out was held from January 7, to April 29, 2014. It consisted of Mem-bers playing in Men’s Day each Tuesday earning points for participation and for winning. The top three point earners and ties automatically earned a spot in the Shoot-Out and the remaining players were drawn by lottery. After a grueling four months, Tony Karnas was the top point earner with 27 points. Tom Andreas, Dave Bauman and Russ Hudson locked their spots in the Shoot-Out by earning 17 points each.

Each member earned one entry into the lottery for each point they earned by participating in Men’s Day for the drawing of the remaining players. The last six qualifiers from the lottery were: Sam Nutty, Skip Leonhardt, Jim Reeves, Dick Obrig, George Solari and Don Earnhardt.

Men’s Two Man Front Tee Scramble

A new men’s event was played on Saturday, May 3, 2014 on the South Course. It was a Two-Man Front Tee Scramble and there were 86 participants. Congratulations to Pat Piercy and Mike Anzivino for winning the gross division with a 9-under, 63. Rick Bates and Pat Hughes won the net division with a 60.2.

WGA Challenge

Qualifying for the WGA Spring Shoot-Out Challenge was held from February 26 to May 21, 2014. It consisted of Members playing in Ladies Day each Wednesday earning points for participation and for winning. The top five point earners and ties automatically earned a spot in the Shoot-Out. The re-maining players came from the Members who played the most in Ladies Day events.

Qualifiers include: Debbie Hengemuhle, Pam Finnie, Joy Gib-bons, Karen Wirtzberger, Nancy Everett, Anita Barreca, Caro-lyn Ballard, Judy Minnich, Mary Jane Reeves and Janet Lombardi.

On Friday, May 23, the Shoot-Out was played on the first five holes of the North Course. On the first hole three players were eliminated, second and third holes two players were eliminated leaving only three players for the fourth hole.

The highlight of the event was when winner, Karen Wirtzber-ger, hit her second shot in the pond on #3. She dropped a ball, added the penalty shot and knocked the next shot in the hole for a four net three, awesome!

Wimbledon Social Due to work that will be taking place on the driving range this year, we will be unable to host the grass court exhibition at Moss Creek. However, we will be working with neighboring community, Belfair, to put on a “Breakfast at Wimbledon” exhibi-tion on their grass courts. More details to follow in the coming weeks. July 4th Social The MCTC annual July 4th social will be held on Friday, June 27, from 4:00—7:00pm. Dress in your red, white, and blue and join us at the Tennis Center for a Round Robin, food and drinks. Prizes will be awarded to the winners. Thank You A special thank you to all of the people that attended the Moss Creek Pro-Am and Silent Auction. The event was a great success; Moss Creek was able to raise over $11,000 for the local Special Olympics, Area 8. The tennis event featured 16 local area pros playing with 28 Members throughout the day. There was also an exhibition by the Special Olympics Athletes. A big thank you to our sponsors for the event and Hilton Head BMW and Lawrence Taylor from Charter One Realty. As we make the turn to summer, it is very important that we remember these 10 Practical Steps to Succeed in the Heat. They can be found on the USTA website and are included in the educational booklet entitled Heat and Hydration Con-cerns for Tennis Players. The booklet was developed by the USTA Sport Science Committee. 1. Physically Prepare – The more physically fit the tennis player is, the less likelihood they will experience heat related

issues. 2. Drink, Drink, Drink – Drinking a combination of water and electrolyte enhanced beverages throughout the day, will

help keep the tennis player well hydrated. 3. Don’t Rely on Thirst – Drink consistently, not just when thirsty. The body may be 2% dehydrated by the time thirst is

experienced. 4. Increase Salt Content in Food and Drink – As salt is the major electrolyte lost in sweat, it is important to replace this

important electrolyte throughout the day. Food that contains high salt contents are vegetable juice, canned soups, sports drinks, salted pretzels.

5. Use Ice and Other Cooling Mechanisms – Keeping the body cool before, during and after practice or competition is helpful in maintaining an appropriate body temperature. However, putting ice directly on muscles and joints during play is not advised due to the possibility of muscle and joint stiffening.

6. Appropriate fuel pre, during and post practice or match. 7. Clothing - It is best to choose light colored, breathable and loosely woven fabrics to help sweat evaporate easily. 8. Sunscreen – In addition to helping reduce the instances of skin cancer, which is important for long-term health, ap-

plying liberal amounts of sunscreen will also prevent short-term sunburn that increases an athlete’s skin temperature and may make them more susceptible to heat related problems.

9. Acclimation – It is important to get the body adapted to a hot environment. Most occurrences of heat illness occur in the first 2-3 days of training or competition in a hot and humid environment.

10. Reduce contact with direct sunlight when not playing.

Group Swim Lessons Tuesdays & Thursdays (June 1st—July 10th—no classes on July 1st or July 3rd)

Fundamental Skills 11:15am— 12 Noon

Class is for children who are comfortable in the water and are able to do the “doggie paddle” unassisted. Children will explore retrieving objects under water, floating, as well as getting their arms out of the water

when they swim.

Stroke Refinement 12:15—1:00pm

Coordination and refinement are the objective at this level. Participants refine performance in all strokes. Flip turns on front and back will be introduced.

Too Young for Camp? 30-minute swimming lessons are available for the “little ones” beginning Monday, June 30 through Thursday,

July 3, from 9:00-9:30am and 9:30-10:00am for children five to seven years of age (no classes on July 4).

Complimentary Pool Games Join us Wednesdays from 1:00—2:00pm beginning June 18.

Open to all ages—meet at playground. Please call ahead (836-6160) if you plan to

attend the June 18, July 16, or August 13 sessions, so we are able to prepare the games and have

enough materials for everyone.

Who doesn’t like to spend time with friends on a summer afternoon? The fitness staff would like to help your children/grandchildren come together this summer with three extra fun events, so mark your calendar for Wednesday, June 18, July 16 and August 13. We will meet at the playground from 1:00 to 2:00pm.

In June we will be making a craft (two different options will be available).

July has us tie-dying shirts, we will provide the supplies and you bring the shirt.

We will end the summer with an obstacle course, including a water balloon toss in August!

All sessions conclude with an ice cream treat! Be sure to contact the Fitness Center at 836-6160 to register, as we want to be prepared with enough supplies! Don’t forget about our Wednesday pool games beginning June 25 from 1:00 to 2:00pm - no need to sign-up, just come to the pool for fun with Jasmine!

It seems as the humidity rises, so does the activity at Moss Creek—and the summer of 2014 will be no exception!! As always, Melissa Sheire has planned a full slate of activities for the Members and their guests. We are actually going to start a little ear-lier this year at the suggestion of the House Committee to have a guitarist at the pool once a month on Saturdays for June, July and August. We will not have a themed buffet, but rather will have Mackay’s Grill open for Members if they choose. Join us on June 7, with guitarist Jim Harper from 6:00-9:00pm. Come on out for our Luau at the Pool on Saturday, June 21. Chef Lenny is planning on cooking a Kalua whole pig, shrimp and vegetable stir fry, sweet and sour chicken and many other dishes inspired by the Islands in the Pacific. What else do we have going on this summer? Oh yeah, the Fourth of July. We are going to kick start the 4th of July week with Kid’s Night on Friday, June 27. Please sign up your kids, or grandkids early, as space is limited. I want to remind everyone to call the Clubhouse to make a reservation for dinner that night. We have been filling some Fridays 10 days out or more. The next night, we will be trying something new and that is a good ole’ USA themed dinner. Lenny has planned such specials as New York Strip Steak, Maryland Crab Cakes, Santa Fe Stuffed Chicken Breast, and Pan Seared Indiana Duck Breast. Grill Room menu will be available that night, but again, make sure you have reservations early. Since I have been here, we have always done a huge Fourth of July Celebration week, which has been fabulous. We will be starting at 11:30am on the 4th of July with a parade around Bostwick Circle and continue with water slides, face painting, spin art, carnival games, DJ music, and more until 2:00pm. Food and beverage service will be available for purchase at the Bost-wick (limited special menu) and a patriotic menu at Mackay’s Creek Grill throughout the day. I want to thank, in advance, all the families that will make June a great month at Moss Creek and also safe travels to all that are traveling to cooler climates.

Author Series Lunch with Joseph Finder Friday, June 6, 2014 12 Noon

Joseph Finder's plan was to become a spy. Or maybe a professor of Russian history. Instead he became a bestselling author of 10 novels, including Paranoia and High Crimes, which were both made into major motion pictures. His new novel, Suspicion, will be published on May 27, by Dutton, the winner of a three day, eight publisher auction. Every-one wanted it on their spring publication list, and they are sending Joe to Moss Creek as part of his book tour. The menu includes stuffed boneless chicken breast with rice pilaf, and vegetables with black cherry swirl-ricotta cheesecake. The cost is $22 inclusive for this event. Call 837-2230 today!!

There are so many things I like about summer, and cooking outdoors is one of them! When entertaining friends or family during the nicer months of the Low Country, I usually like to do some sort of cooking outside either on the char grill or the smoker. And of course, as you might imagine, when people arrive at a chef’s house for a cookout, they are often expecting some exotic twist on just about everything. Don’t get me wrong, there are times when dinner at my house strongly resembles a cook-ing show, but good times usually happen around fun, casual food such as grilled bur-gers or smoked BBQ chicken. Sometimes, the “twist”, can be very easy. Since many of my out of town visitors are from well north of the Mason-Dixon line, infusing a truly South Carolina touch to something can really represent a major change. Columbia style mustard base BBQ sauce will almost always get a New Yorker to wrinkle their nose…until they try it. This is the sauce we make and serve frequently at the Clubhouse, and it has just the perfect zing to counter balance the sweetness of the sugar. Make sure to mix it up at least a day in advance so that all the sugar and salt dissolve, and remix just before serving since it doesn’t contain chemical emulsifi-ers like the jars on the supermarket shelf do. Enjoy it on chicken, pork, or yes, even hamburgers. Happy grilling!
