Xtw York Dec 10 Affidavits by gorge H Dunkle a broker Captain I August W Loose seaman the two I men asserting that Dr Frederick A I Cook hired them for 4000 with the r promise of an additional bonus of 1500 to one of them to fabricate as ¬ tronomical observations calculations of latitude and longitude for submis- sion ¬ to the University of Copenhagen- were published In the New York Times yesterday The men admit that their reason for making the affidavits was that the explorer only paid them 2CO for their work Dunkle tells how he met Cook and Caused him to become interested Dunkle says they went to Cook with the idea that he wanted some one to help him prepare evidence clever enough to fool the Danish savants The two men decided that the explor- ers ¬ original narrative bore traces of fraud that Cook would welcome the right kind of assistance in carrying out the bluff Also there is evidence that Dunkle intended to reserve the lions share of the spoils for himself Capt A W Loose master pilot and navigator who made affidavit that ho formulated a series of observations and data for Dr Cook at Cooks re- quest ¬ since the latters return from the Arctic region talked yesterday at his home in Brooklyn concerning statements made in the affidavit I went to Dr Cook said Loose think ¬ ing I might assist him but never ex ¬ pected to do such extended work A short talk with Dr Cook convinced me he knew almost nothing about naviga- tion ¬ He was Ignorant of some of the essentials of the science A person not accurate might easily have thought himself at the pole when he was only within sixty miles of It As I got deeper Into the matter I began to suspect Dr Cook was never out of sight of land- Captain Loose said that the writing down of seconds in Cooks reports of observations did not show a skillful attempt to deceive As to whether- he thought it possible for Cook to de ¬ clare these calculations of observa- tions ¬ by Loose to be simply for com ¬ parison with his own Loose said Dr Cook twill probably say this but why did he need any one to make calcula- tions ¬ for him If he went to the pole and took careful observations on his way to and from the pole- A HEARTY
