all druggists THE RUSTIC FLORIDIAN- AND HIS METHODS- In Florida the stranger and un ¬ initiated often run across terms ap- plied ¬ to the country that is new One of these is the term flat woods This is generally applied to low pine woods that are practical- ly ¬ covered by water during the rainy season but that grow splendid crops when the water recedes The period during the months of July August and September is the rainy season These flatwoods lands vary in height so that there are here and there ridges and knolls that are out of the water all the time and it is on these ridges that the Florida cracker makes a little home and develops his farm- A Florida cracker Is a rustic son of the soil The home of the cracker Is a home in every sense except perhaps the building and to those people who think a home must be a palace the cot of the cracker would appear rather In ¬ significant but nevertheless it is home In every sense of the meaning in some cases built of small logs with the cracks filled with loose boards rived from the pine trees Rough and crude as these homes may be the occupants generally enjoy the best of health and are happy and a case of sickness among these people is a rare occurrence They abhor civilization and from those sections of the country that have rapidly developed in the past few years the cracker has de- camped ¬ On the advent of civiliza- tion ¬ he pulls up stakes and retreats farther back in the wilderness crude as his life may be however- he is the advance guard of civiliza- tion ¬ and a man who would not ex ¬ change his method or mode of life for that of any human being under the canopy of heaven His farm Ing operations are sufficient to sup- ply ¬ the few needs of his family and the work of producing them is in no wise a burden and the pleasure- of life in the woods with its hunt ¬ ing fishing and cruising about in search of stray cattle and hogs is to him an ideal existence Every flatwoods farmer has his pony or mule a few head of cattle- a large drove of razorback hogs and a flock of hens While he pays very little attention to farming in the course of a year he does how ¬ ever produce quite a quantity and variety of foodstuffs While some of these crackers limit their farming operations to the planting- of an acre or two of sweet potatoes- and attending to their hogs and cat tie there are others who go into agricultural pursuits more exten- sively ¬ We have a mand In mind who lives a few miles back from the coast whose name should we men ¬ tion It would be Immediately re ¬ cognized by Floridians acquainted- with this section of the country This man owns a horse a big bunch of hogs a number of cattle and he has entered into the spirit of pro ¬ gress and is doing quite a little farming This last year he had in the neighborhood of ten acres In corn that gave him a splendid yield and not to depart from his primitive- ways he had an acre in sweet po¬ tatoes planted early and they sold readily In an early market This one acre was followed later by two more acres that will give him and his family food and furnish some I ready money He had one acre of rice which gave a very handsome yield also one acre in sugar cane from which he secured about twelve barrels of syrup He also had a fine crop of watermelons and a notice ¬ able feature of all these agricultural efforts was the splendid cultivation- This man is happy and why shouldnt he be with a little cabin- in the woods his family around him plenty of hogs and hominy sweet potatoes and syrup No troubles no disagreeable neighbors- to dispute his rights this flatwopds farmer Is one of the happiest hu ¬ man beings and Is a type of a class who live long happily and die in the grace of GodEast Coast Homeseeker wtt W THE RUSTIC FLORIDIAN-AND HIS METHODS-

In Florida the stranger and un¬

initiated often run across terms ap-plied

¬

to the country that is newOne of these is the term flatwoods This is generally appliedto low pine woods that are practical-ly

¬

covered by water during the rainyseason but that grow splendidcrops when the water recedes Theperiod during the months of JulyAugust and September is the rainyseason

These flatwoods lands vary inheight so that there are here andthere ridges and knolls that are outof the water all the time and it ison these ridges that the Floridacracker makes a little home and

develops his farm-A Florida cracker Is a rustic

son of the soil The home of thecracker Is a home in every sense

except perhaps the building and tothose people who think a homemust be a palace the cot of thecracker would appear rather In¬

significant but nevertheless it ishome In every sense of the meaningin some cases built of small logswith the cracks filled with looseboards rived from the pine treesRough and crude as these homesmay be the occupants generallyenjoy the best of health and arehappy and a case of sickness amongthese people is a rare occurrenceThey abhor civilization and fromthose sections of the country thathave rapidly developed in the pastfew years the cracker has de-camped

¬

On the advent of civiliza-tion

¬

he pulls up stakes and retreatsfarther back in the wilderness

crude as his life may be however-he is the advance guard of civiliza-tion

¬

and a man who would not ex¬

change his method or mode of lifefor that of any human being underthe canopy of heaven His farmIng operations are sufficient to sup-ply

¬

the few needs of his family andthe work of producing them is inno wise a burden and the pleasure-of life in the woods with its hunt ¬

ing fishing and cruising about insearch of stray cattle and hogs is tohim an ideal existence

Every flatwoods farmer has hispony or mule a few head of cattle-a large drove of razorback hogsand a flock of hens While he paysvery little attention to farming inthe course of a year he does how¬

ever produce quite a quantity andvariety of foodstuffs While someof these crackers limit theirfarming operations to the planting-of an acre or two of sweet potatoes-and attending to their hogs and cattie there are others who go intoagricultural pursuits more exten-sively

¬

We have a mand In mind wholives a few miles back from thecoast whose name should we men ¬

tion It would be Immediately re¬

cognized by Floridians acquainted-with this section of the countryThis man owns a horse a big bunchof hogs a number of cattle and hehas entered into the spirit of pro¬

gress and is doing quite a littlefarming This last year he had inthe neighborhood of ten acres Incorn that gave him a splendid yieldand not to depart from his primitive-ways he had an acre in sweet po¬

tatoes planted early and they soldreadily In an early market Thisone acre was followed later by twomore acres that will give him andhis family food and furnish some I

ready money He had one acre ofrice which gave a very handsomeyield also one acre in sugar canefrom which he secured about twelvebarrels of syrup He also had a finecrop of watermelons and a notice ¬

able feature of all these agriculturalefforts was the splendid cultivation-

This man is happy and whyshouldnt he be with a little cabin-in the woods his family aroundhim plenty of hogs and hominysweet potatoes and syrup Notroubles no disagreeable neighbors-to dispute his rights this flatwopdsfarmer Is one of the happiest hu ¬

man beings and Is a type of a classwho live long happily and die inthe grace of GodEast CoastHomeseeker
