April 19Hen James I P Talliaferro was today elected Uni- ted ¬ States senator from Florida by a j joint session of the legislature He made a strong speech of acceptance which was enthusiastically received by both members and visitors The legislature today by concur ¬ rent resolution extended to the va- rious ¬ chapters of the Daughters of the Confederacy of the state an invi ¬ tation to be in Tallahassee on May 2 to assist in the celebration of the re ¬ turn of the battle flags F E n- At the Christian Church Last evening at the Christian church Evangelist E L Frazier preached from a beautiful oil paint- ing ¬ I chart a sermon on the Three I Great Religions of the Bible He said no one can read the scrip- tures ¬ understandingly who does not catch this thought that three sepa ¬ rate religions have been given to man He then showed that the first religion given was the Patriarchal- and continued 2500 years At Mt Sinai the Jewish religion- was given with its ten commandments- and Sabbath day and Levitical priest- hood ¬ Then the Christian religion was given Man had religion 4000 years before the Christian religion was given Patriarchal and Jewish relif I ions were before the cross and the I Christian religion is after the cross Preaching the gospel the Christian church Christian baptism the Lords Supper the Lords Day and worship through Christ are all after the cross There were no Christians in the Patriarchal and Jewish ages They were true servants and worshipers of God and were saved The evangelist showed that the Sabbath came to an end and the Lords Day became the sacred day and insisted that Christians should be more careful to keep the day religiously than the Jews were to keep their Sabbath The Christian religion is the last and will continue until the Tuesday night all present ex- cept ¬ Alderman Carmichael the fourth ward The regular bills were audited and ordered paid An ordinance proposed by the city board of health giving them certain powers etc was introduced and re ¬ ferred to the judiciary committee- The clerk was instructed to write letters to all the physicians practic- ing ¬ in Ocala requesting them tolJe more prompt in making mortuary re ¬ ports Mr Ford chairman of the finance committee reported that the officers reports for March had been examin- ed ¬ and approved j the city treasurer has arrange 1 for the increase in bond recently ordered j the Barnett judg ¬ ment against of the city amounting- to over 3000 has been paid j about 15000 in city scrip has been re ¬ deemed to date An ordinance regulating the speed- of automobiles on the streets to ten miles an hour and prohibiting any ¬ one under the age of fifteen years driving an automobile passed its sec ¬ ond and third reading and will be ¬ come a law in ten days after the mayor signs it In the discussion of certain sections of this ordinance several remarks bordering on per ¬ sonal were indulged in by two of the l city fathers The light and water committee was authorized to engage the further ser ¬ vices of experts on the specifications I for the new light plant if it is thought necessary I The matter of fixing salaries and- I bonds of city
