The new standards in mobile data processing

Honeywell introduces the Dolphin 7800, a com­prehensive enterprise digital assistant (EDA), which empowers field service, parcel delivery, direct store delivery and other mobile workers with simplified access to a diverse range of data collection and computing capabilities. Jarltech's growing challenge

During the past 15 years, Jarltech became one of the most important European specialist distri butors of POS and Auto­ID hardware; and its growth is continuing. The headquarters in Usingen alone boasts 1000 m² of office and 3000 m² of warehouse space. Despite the re­quirements that such a size results in, Jarltech always put high priority on customer needs. The company offers many additional services, including very high stock availability and, for many European countries, an evening ship­ping service.

The challenge, therefore, was to meet the gro­wing space requirements and demands on employees in the warehousing and logistics section, without experiencing financial stress or loss of quality in deliveries.

A good system ...

In order to handle their enormous number of orders every day, Jarltech uses a self­devel­oped ERP system, which consists of several software and hardware modules. This system was working well beforehand, actually: with 15,000 to 20,000 shipping notes per month, their error rate stayed below 0.15 %. With a shipping note and pick list in their hand, the logistics staff collected the required items from the warehouse. As they used to work through the list from top to bottom, detours were un­avoidable. Another difficulty was that they would not know if a product would be stored on an out­of­reach shelf, five metres high. This procedure demanded much attention of the logistics team, and a final quality check was required as well. This was time consuming – time that was becoming short due to an increasing order volume.

... now working with a turbo

There was no way around it: to guaran­tee efficient ware­housing and fast order processing in the future, the sys­tem needed an up grade. Being an official Getac distributor, Jarltech found the solution in the powerful and highly rugged Getac E100 tablet PC. In August 2011, Jarltech integrated nineteen of the PCs into the picking process and connected them with scanners via Bluetooth. Jarltech created an interface to synchronise the ERP system and the terminals, while shelves were reallocated.

Now, each order picker logs in to the specially programmed system via the E100 and imme­diately begins processing orders. The process

begins by scanning the automatically printed shipping note. The interface then calculates the most efficient route to the individual items and displays a virtual warehouse map on the tab­let PC, very similar to a PNA. Thus, the picker is able to collect the items without detours. What is more, the new system also supports quality management. The order picker scans each retrieved item using the connected scan­ner; simultaneously triggering the ERP system to check the data. If the article number mat­ches the order, the program books out the unit automatically. For confirmation, the product picture appears on the tablet display. After completing the route, the employee packs the order for shipping and the customer soon en­joys a flawless delivery. The system upgrade also optimised the accessibility of products; palettes on high racks are filtered by the pro­gram, since they are used only for the storage of refilling stock for lower shelves.

First-hand experience of Getac'spotential

Getac's E100 tablet PCs are the ideal choice for Jarltech's warehouse logistics. They are handy enough to be carried around as a powerful terminal and provide advanced functionality. The large touch display allows for easy reading and interaction with the ERP system. Because of the evening shipping service, long operation time is very important – and that is yet another strong point of the E100. The rechargeable battery needs to be changed only once a day. This is easily done, even in the middle of oper­ation, thanks to a backup battery. This battery also fills the gap in case the tablet runs out of power. The reserve battery provides enough power to finish the ongoing picking task and then change the main battery.
