Welcome to the 2009 Swansea Marina

handbook which is aimed at providing

you with all the information you require

for a pleasurable stay in Swansea.

Please take time to read the information

contained inside which includes important

locking procedures and safety information.

With the marina staff working hard to

ensure your stay goes as smoothly as

possible all you have to do is sit back,

relax and enjoy all that Swansea and

the Gower coastline have to off er.

The Marina lies in the very heart of the

city’s redeveloped and award winning

Maritime Quarter and is surrounded by

restaurants, shops and marine businesses.

We were the fi rst coastal Marina to open in

the Bristol Channel and we are one of the

few Marinas in the UK to hold the coveted

Yacht Harbour Association 5 Gold Anchor

award. We are bordered by the city centre

on one side and our own sandy beach on

the other. Road access is excellent, London is

about 3.5 hours away on the M4 Motorway

and the rail service is to be recommended.

The locks are manned by our experienced

staff and access is almost continuous,

except at LWST.

All Marina users are reminded that we

share the entrance to the river with the

fairway for commercial shipping entering

and leaving the port of Swansea.

It is very important that all boat owners obey

the rules laid down by the authorities and

give way to commercial shipping at all times.

Entering and Leaving the Port

All pleasure craft using the port must observe

the rules governing the “Prevention of

Collisions at Sea”, particularly when navigating

within the dredged channel North of the

S.W.I.G.G. buoy (South West Inner Green

Grounds) to the harbour entrance.

You are advised to approach the harbour

entrance in the waters to the west of the

dredged channel (where practicable).

Large vessels entering or leaving the harbour

must be given a wide berth at all times.

All pleasure craft must be under power when

in the vicinity of the harbour and should clear

waters used by commercial shipping as soon

as possible.

Swansea DocksSwansea Docks

Port RegulationsTo seaward, vessels approaching the

harbour will see 9 signal lights displayed in

3 columns of 3 lights. The centre light of the

westerly column controls pleasure craft.

When this light is red craft must not enter

the river and should hold SW of the western

breakwater. If in doubt call Swansea Docks

VHF Channel 14, or Tawe Lock Channel 18.

When the entry lights of the Tawe lock

come into view, vessels should make

radio contact for locking instructions and

information from the duty lockmaster on

VHF Channel 18. Call sign “Tawe Lock”.

Lock AvailabilityMarina & Swingbridge – call sign:

‘Swansea Marina’ CH. 80

Tawe Barrage Lock – call sign:

‘Tawe Lock’ CH. 18

It is essential that all boat owners

wishing to proceed through the locks or

swingbridge operate a VHF radio.

Vessels must call “Swansea Marina” on

channel 80 before leaving their berth to

request lock information and must remain

listening on CH. 80 until passage through the

bridge or lock is completed.

When you require use of the Tawe Barrage

lock you must call ‘Tawe Lock’ to request

information and remain listening on CH. 18

until passage through the lock is completed.

Do not proceed into the locks unless

instruction has been given.

Lock Operation

Lock Operating HoursWeekdays 0700 – 1900 GMT

Weekdays 0700 – 2200 BST

Sat/Sun 0700 – 2200 BST & GMT

Access to Tidal LocksAll access from the sea to the Marina is

through the Tawe Barrage Lock during the

published hours. During busy locking periods

a queuing system will be in operation.

Vessels that do not make contact with the

Lockmaster or disobey his/her instruction

will not be given priority over other traffi c.

In the interest of every boat owner’s safety,

it is of the utmost importance that the

Lockmaster’s instructions are obeyed at all

times.

Vessels leaving either lock must then

transfer to the next lock’s VHF channel

on approach and use the appropriate

procedure above.

11www.swanseamarina.org.uk

Page 12: Swansea Marina Brochure 2009

Using the Marina lock

Normal procedure for locking out

through the Tawe Barrage lock is for the

lock to be taken down on the hour and

return to the river on the half hour.

The fi rst lock out of the day at the Tawe lock

will be taken down at approximately 0710.

The last Tawe lock in is half an hour before

the close of business each day. Boat owners

should be ready to leave their berth at

approximately quarter to the hour to allow

vessels suffi cient time to enter the Tawe lock.

Any deviation from the above will be at the

discretion of the duty Tawe Lockmaster who

will pay due regard to the volume of traffi c

and any other prevailing conditions.

Any vessels not returning on the same day

are required to inform the Lockmaster and

Coastguard. Two holding buoys are situated

downstream from the lock and may be

used outside of locking hours. Great care is

necessary at low water spring tides as there is

a danger of drying out.

The Gold Anchor Award Scheme has

been established to improve the

standards of facilities available to all

boat owners. Marina Operators who

are Members of the Yacht Harbour

Association may enter the Scheme for

assessment.

The level of the Award ranges from three

to fi ve Gold Anchors. Any Award is a sign

of a quality marina, whilst the number of

anchors indicates the level of the facilities

available. The Scheme is purely voluntary

and is designed to bring the industry to

the forefront of boating and to encourage

better standards.

Swansea Marina was assessed under the

Gold Anchor Award Scheme in 2008. We are

pleased to inform you that as a result of our

eff orts to provide you with a fi rst class and

value for money facility, we were awarded

fi ve Gold Anchors.
