Susie Long (1966 ± 2007): She struck a blow against theprivatisation of healthcare

The recent untimely death of Susie Long was widely covered in the media inthe South. Susie made a powerful impression in January of this year whenshe spoke on RTE radio of how she had developed terminal cancer of thecolon. It was a tragic and shocking story.

Using the pseudonym, "Rosie", as her 13 year old son, Fergus, didn't yet know the awfulreality, Susie Long explained how she had been referred for a scan by her local doctor inthe summer of 2005 but being a public patient was on a waiting list until the end of February2006.

The scan showed she had cancer. Worse it had spread to the lungs. And criminally this hadvery likely happened while she was on the waiting list.

During her twelfth chemotherapy session, Susie heard of a fellow patient whose chance of recovery was far better than hers because he had his scan done three days after seeing hisdoctor. He had private insurance. When she went home that evening and saw a Departmentof Health TV advertisement warning that bowel cancer can kill but not if it is caught in time,she was so angry she decided to speak out.

I didn't hear "Rosie" on the Liveline programme but was alerted to her contribution by anemail to my Dail office. It was from her husband, Conor MacLiam, whom I had known for along time. He told me that 'Rosie' was really Susie whom I had also known and attached theemail which she had originally sent to RTE outlining her story.

In the early 1980s Conor was a member of Militant, the forerunner of the Socialist Party andmade a major contribution in producing our political material. Having arrived from the UnitedStates at 17 years of age and after meeting Conor, Susie also became a member of Militant.They later moved to Kilkenny where they brought up their two children, Aine and Fergus.

Susie's story graphically brought home the reality of the two tier health system in this Stateand shocked and angered decent people up and down the country. I got the readyagreement of the Independent TDs in the Dail Technical Group to tackle the Governmentover cancer services in our three hours private members time debate due a few weeks after the programme.

Our motion noted ³with alarm the recently highlighted situation of a Kilkenny mother, µRosie¶,who, being a public patient, had to wait eight months for a colonoscopy with the mostserious and tragic consequences for her health and life´, and called for ³the scrapping of theGovernment bias toward privatisation of health care´ and for a ³fully resourced public healthservice with immediate access to services by all, based on medical needs´.

On my invitation Susie followed the debate from the Dail public gallery accompanied byFergus. It wasn't easy for her listening to Minister for Health Harney giving the governmentline on the health service. She was, however, very pleased when Harney was forced toannounce during the debate that in the case of her local hospital, St. Luke's Kilkenny, ³TheHSE has made available capital funding of ¼300,000 to build a new modular endoscopy unitat the hospital.´ Susie was invited to be the keynote speaker when the sod was turned for that project in May. She invited me down for the ceremony but unfortunately it was in themiddle of the general election campaign and I was very sorry I couldn't go.

That investment in St. Luke's has since been boosted to a 24 bed day care unit. All this wasprioritised and extended in scope as a result of Susie's campaign since January. It will be anenduring tribute to her memory.

Susie was caught in a difficult economic situation like many working people. As she said,³Despite one and a half incomes we couldn't afford VHI or BUPA´. Then, showing her commitment to equality and justice for all in the health service, she continued, ³But even if we could have we wouldn't have gotten it because we believed that all people should getgood care despite their incomes. We thought queue jumping was wrong. We'resocialists«´.

Our solidarity and support goes out to Conor, Aine and Fergus in this most difficult time. Wefeel sure that their deep sorrow and justified anger at the untimely and avoidable death of their beloved partner and mother will be assuaged by the realisation that she struck a blowagainst the privatisation of health care in this State and turned a grievous injustice to herself to the benefit of countless others in the future.

About Susie

Susie Long was born in Ohio, USA. In 1984, directly after finishing high school, shetravelled to Ireland, leaving the America of Ronald Reagan, cold war politics andmilitarism to find her spiritual home here. Susie became a socialist, a member of Amnesty International, a home-birth advocate, an environmental campaigner and adefender of women¶s rights. In her last few years she was proud to work for the KilkennyWomen¶s Refuge.

Susie¶s Story Susie died of bowel cancer on 12th October, 2007. Aged 42, she left behind her sonFergus (14), daughter Áine (19) and husband Conor Mac Liam.

Having approached her GP in the summer of 2005 with a number of symptoms, Susiewas referred for a colonoscopy. In the 7 months that she waited for this test, her as yetundiagnosed cancer spread. By the time she was diagnosed, it was too late to save her.

Susie did not have private health insurance as she did not believe it right to skip thepublic queue. Unfortunately, the public waiting list had grown large due to the lack of aday ward in St Luke¶s Hospital in Kilkenny. During a chemo session in January 2007,she discovered that another patient, who had private insurance, had been diagnosedwithin 3 days of being referred and was going to recover.

That same evening she saw a TV ad recommending that people get checked early for bowel cancer, as it could be a matter of life or death. This was more than Susie couldtake. Under the pseudonym ³Rosie´, she wrote an email to the Liveline radio show toexpose the two-tier health service and how it had condemned her to die simply becauseshe was a public patient.

Joe Duffy interviewed her the next day, and a huge reaction from the public generated asubstantial national debate on the issue, which is ongoing today. The numbers of

people who rang the show, confirming the existence of a slow lane for public patients,smashed the myth that all were treated equally on the basis of medical need.

Susie¶s courage in highlighting the issue and refusing to die quietly led to apologiesfrom the Taoiseach and the Minister for Health. After a motion dealing with the state of cancer services was put down by independent deputies in the Dail, the Minister for Health announced the provision of monies for a day ward in St Luke¶s Hospital,Kilkenny.

By August 2007, Susie¶s condition had deteriorated so much that she had to move toDublin to avail of hospice services. From Our Lady¶s Hospice in Harold¶s Cross, she

was interviewed by Prime Time, the RTE current affairs TV programme. During thisinterview, she outlined her belief in the need for a properly-resourced public healthsystem in which all would be treated equally and appropriately.

When Susie died a month later, she had already become an icon for the campaign for the type of public health system she had advocated. Her courage inspired many and, inrecognition of her legacy, some of Susie¶s friends decided to work together for theestablishment of a hospice in Kilkenny, so that others in the area could benefit from theservices for which Susie herself was forced to travel to Dublin.
