Hey guys!Hey guys!I am extremely honoured to be chosen as this issue’s Guest Editor. I must say that I was shocked when I received an e-mail informing me of the selection. I have never been the guest editor of anything before, and it is great that I have the chance to play an important role in this edition of Superkidz!

I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who encouraged me and helped me in becoming who I am today, especially my grandparents. I have noticed that grandparents are often forgotten or rarely acknowledged among their grandchildren. People often describe their grandparents as a nag, or even a burden, forgetting the fact that grandparents are the ones who play a huge part in helping us grow up to be respectable people in the society.

My grandparents are very important people in my life. They were the ones who stood by my side when I was ill. They were the ones who took care of me when my parents were working. They were the ones who got up early in the morning every week to buy me fresh fish and vegetables from the market.

Every time I see my grandparents, they would hug me tightly and smother me with kisses. Their actions gave me a sense of belonging and love. Whenever I do something wrong, they would explain the pros and cons about my actions without shouting at me. Their kind advice and teachings made me think twice before repeating my mistakes.

In addition to that, my grandparents are also concerned about my education. They work extremely hard in order to provide me the best education available. They often encourage me to try my very best to study hard and achieve splendid results. They also award me whenever I achieve good marks in any examinations.

I am sure that most of your grandparents have given you the equal amount of love my grandparents have given me. Therefore, I urge each and every one of you to treat them with the same amount of love and respect I have given mine whilst they are still around. Never forget what they have done for you!

Being a native of the historical state, Melaka, it is no surprise where Elaine had gained her interest in ethnic music when she published her first book entitled, Ethnic Musical Instruments of Malaysia (EMIOM) two years ago. It is that very first attempt that earned her the Malaysia Book of Records “Youngest Author Award”. Now at the age of 18, Elaine has successfully published two books with another title called ‘Sunshine in Our Lives’.

Being the oldest between her two siblings, Elaine explains how her interest in writing started. “I wrote my first book (EMIOM) because I could not find any book of this nature in the market. ‘Sunshine’ is my second book which expresses my opinion on a variety of topics.” Having said that, Elaine voices out her concern and strongly believes that if each one of us does our part to be nicer, more positive and more open-minded people, this country, this world would be a much better place to live in. Her precious thoughts and opinions in her second book have garnered 11 support letters, whereby two were from our very own Prime Minister and Deputy Prime Minister.

Besides having the power of writing, Lee Elaine’s voice is even more powerful as she sings her way through winning a Gold Medal in the Classical Vocal Category at the 2006 International Hong Kong Youth Choir Festival. “I considered this a great achievement as I was pitted against the best in the world from 46 countries,” said Elaine, who had composed and sang eight songs related to the contents of her second book. The composer cum classical vocalist, however, shared with us her most regrettable moment at thiscompetitionwhenshedidnotacceptanoffertostudyintheUnitedStates by a judge. Nonetheless, Elaine is blessed to be under the auspices

Aerospace

Adventure Zone (AAZ)

Hi kids, and welcome to the Aerospace Adventure Zone! This section is dedicated to those of you who get a real kick out of astronomy, space science, aeronautics and things that fly! Learn about the planets and our solar system.

Trivia Let’s discuss mankind’s achievements in space!

First living creature to go into spaceThe first live animal to be launched in space was a small dog named Laika. She was launched into orbit on 3rd November 1957 aboard the spacecraft Sputnik 2. Unfortunately, it was a one-way trip for Laika and she died after several orbits due to a failure in the cooling system of her capsule. For engineers and scientists, this was an important test to see if living creatures could survive in space. The Americans later launched a chimpanzee called Ham into space. Ham’s trip was much better because his capsule made it back to earth and Ham was recovered in good condition, no worse after his flight into space.

The second person to walk on the moonMost people know that the first person to walk on the moon was Neil Armstrong. Soon after, he was heard saying the famous words, “One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.” The second astronaut to walk on the moon was Edwin Aldrin, or better known as Buzz Aldrin. As there is no atmosphere wind or weather on the moon, the footprints and equipment that they left on the moon are still there to this very day. Maybe in the not-too-distant future, space tourists may visit the site on the moon where Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin first landed.

Longest period in space for a humanThe longest single human spaceflight was 438 days by cosmonaut Valeri Polyakov in the Russian MIR Space Station. He left earth on 8th January 1994 and only returned on 22nd March 1995. He suffered no ill effects from his lengthy stay in space proving that humans can adapt to long periods in zero gravity. On the other hand, Sergei Krikalyov has spent more time in space than any other human – a total of 803 days, nine hours and 39 minutes.

Cool Experiments – ExplainedCool Experiments – ExplainedCool Experiments – Explained

Soooper GooSoooper Goo is weird. Something that is a fluid and then suddenly changes to a solid if you hit it or put it under stress is very strange right? What you have made is what scientists call a non-linear fluid.

First, let’s consider a linear fluid, such as water or oil. Water molecules are very slippery, and very ‘happy’ by themselves. If they meet each other, it’s like, “Hey there fellow molecule, how are you doing, nice to see you but I am just passing through.” Unless you freeze water, the molecules are quite happy just cruising around, slipping past one another. The molecules of oil are even more slippery than water and just want to slide by one another without stopping.

Now in the case of the starch solution you made, it is considered a non-linear fluid. Here is what happens. If the solution is sitting still, it looks like a thick liquid. If you tried to quickly stick your finger in it, pour it rapidly or roll it into a ball, you would have seen it turn into a solid.

The reason it does this is quite simple. If your sooper goo is sitting still, the molecules are very happy slipping by each other just like water or oil. If you give the liquid a shock in any way, the molecules suddenly try to stick together, like they have been frightened. In a sense, they form a solid for a brief period until you stop moving the liquid. As soon as you stop moving the liquid, the molecules think, “Hey we are ok….so let’s get slippery again!”

So to wrap it up: Linear fluids don’t form solids when you move them because the molecules want to stay apart and are happy slipping by one another. For a non-linear fluid, the molecules are slippery as long as the fluid is sitting still. As soon as you try move them though, they bind together to form a solid.

Non-linear fluids are a scientific curiosity but may have uses in all sorts of applications. Can you think of any useful jobs for your non-linear fluid?

Ask AAZ

Where do clouds come from?

We have all seen clouds in the sky. As you may

have noticed in Malaysia, there is a weather

pattern that repeats itself almost everyday in

the tropics. Have you noticed that almost every

morning, the sky is clear and sunny and then

during the afternoon, there is a thunderstorm

with rain? This happens very frequently in Kuala

Lumpur during all times of the year.

This is what happens. In the tropics where

we live, there is a great deal of water vapour

suspended in the air. This is called humidity and

is measured as a percentage. On an average day

in KL, the humidity is around 70-80%. Humidity

changes according to where you live. For example,

the humidity of the air in the Sahara desert is

much lower at just 5% or less.

On a typical clear morning in Kuala Lumpur, the

sun begins to heat the ground. The air above

the ground also gets hot and starts to rise

rapidly through the atmosphere. As this warm

air continues to rise, it begins to cool. Cooler air

cannot hold as much water as warm air, so all that

suspended water vapour has to go somewhere.

Eventually, all the water molecules start to form

small droplets in a process called condensation.

After the rising air has cooled sufficiently,

the process of condensation can be seen in the

formation of clouds. This is just like the steam

you see rising from hot water, only higher in

the sky. In the morning, small fluffy clouds will

begin to form in the sky. By about 3 o’clock in

the afternoon, there are large thick columns

of clouds forming that rise high into the sky.

These clouds are called cumulonimbus clouds and

are most likely going to turn into the afternoon

thunderstorm that often begins at about 5 o’clock

in the evening.

When warm air rises during the day, this is usually

at a considerable speed. Once the air starts to

rise, it can accelerate to speeds in excess of

100km per hour (or more) and will continue to rise

up to altitudes of 10,000 meters or more! Imagine

how much water is literally pumped up into the

sky everyday on these huge updrafts of warm air.

Eventually, through the process of condensation

the water droplets that make up clouds become

too big and too heavy to remain airborne. Once

this happens, they begin to fall downwards and it

starts to rain. So get out your umbrella or head

for home… unless you’re a fish!

What are the different types of cancer?

Therearemanydifferenttypesofcancers.Themostcommontypes of cancers in Malaysia are:

Leukaemia (Loo-Key-Me-Yah) : Cancer of the blood cells. Brain Tumours : Brain tumours are sick cells bunched up

together in the head. Lymphoma (Lim-Fo-Ma) : Cancer of the lymph nodes. Neuroblastoma (New-Row-Blas-Toe-Ma) : Cancer of the

nerves. Retinoblastoma (Re-Tea-No-Blas-Toe-Ma) : Cancer of the

eye. Muscle Tumour : Cancer of the muscle. Nephroblastoma (Nef-Row-Blas-Toe-Ma) : Cancer of the

kidney.

Cancer is a name used to describe different diseases thathappen in your body, specifically to your cells. Our bodies are made up of millions of tiny cells. Healthy cells in our body multiply and grow so our bodies work properly. When some of the healthy cells that multiply and grow change into sick cells, it causes a person to have cancer. These sick cells stop the body from working properly, growing healthily and cause discomfort. When sick cells are bunched up together, it forms a lump called a tumour.

There are lots of treatments and medication to make the sick cells stop growing and even disappear. Also, the medicine helps ensure the sick cells won’t come back.

Nobody, not even doctors, knows why some people get cancer and others don’t. When a person gets cancer, they may feel guilty and think it’s their fault. No one gets cancer from making mistakes or misbehaving. No one should feel guilty for being sick or if someone close to them gets cancer because it is not contagious. You can talk, play and hug a person with cancer – you will not ‘catch’ it.

What is cancer and what information should I know about it?

Therearedifferentmedicalteststhatneedtobedonetofindout the type of cancer a person has and the best way to treat it.

Blood Tests & Needles – Every visit, a nurse will test blood as it is the best way to find out how they are.

CAT Scan – This test uses a special computer to take pictures of the inside of the body.

MRI Scan – Another special machine used to take clear pictures of the inside of the body.

Ultrasound – Doctors need to check that the organs in the body work properly so this test is normally done to check that the tummy, liver and kidneys are healthy.

Bone Scan – This test is to check if the bones in your body are healthy.

Biopsy of Tumour – This test is where the doctor takes a small sample of the tumour inside the body to find out what kind of cancer it is.

Bone Marrow Biopsy – The doctor takes a sample of the bone marrow, the soft fleshy part in the middle of the bone where blood is made.

Lumbar Puncture – This test is to check if there are any sick cells in the spine.

What do doctors do to treat cancer?

Detected early, there is an excellent chance of successful treatment. There are a few main types of treatment. Doctors sometimes recommend using a combination of treatments to get the best results.

Chemotherapy – Chemo (as it is commonly called) using differentmedicinestodestroysickcellsorstopthemfromgrowing.Itcausesdifferentsideeffectsindifferentpeople.

Radiotherapy – Radiotherapy involves the use of X-rays to stop the cancer cells from growing and multiplying but doesnothurtthehealthycells.Italsocausessideeffects.

Surgery – Surgery (or ‘Operation’) is when cancerous tissue is removed by the doctor.

Bone Marrow Transplantation – Our bone marrow is important as it produces red blood cells which bring oxygen around our body, white blood cells which fight infections and platelet that helps stop bleeding. A Bone Marrow Transplantation (BMT) means taking a healthy sample of stem cells from the bone marrow of a healthy donor and injecting it into their bone marrow.

Besides the treatments mentioned, there are new treatments being developed and experimented with all the time so there are many treatments to choose from.

What sort of tests are done?

What is the big fuss about smoking?

What happened to Su?

Staying Happy and Active - After treatment, the person will feel very weak and tired and needs to relax until they feel better. Being stuck at home doesn’t mean they can’t have fun though! They can read, draw, colour, watch movies, and play board games! On more energetic days, they go to the park, bicycle, and play sports, anything! Being active helps them stay happy and feel better.

Eating - Eatingwill bedifficult at times and theymaynot even feel like eating theirfavourite food because it hurts so much.

Tummy Ache - Sometimes the medicine doctors give will cause them tummy aches or vomiting.

Infections - It’s extremely important that people with infections stay away from cancer patients. Any contagious sickness like flu, cold, measles and chicken pox are infectious.

Sometimes, treatment may be too late or the cancer is too strong and some children are not able to get better. They pass away and their loved ones may feel angry or confused for many reasons.

Su had cancer. When Su passed away, her friends felt angry that she died. Her best friend was angry because he didn’t get to say goodbye and felt cheated. Luckily, he remembered all the wonderful times they spent together and felt better. Every time he felt sad, he concentrated on the good times he spent with Su.

There are no right or wrong feelings after losing a friend. The important thing is to express those feelings. Speaking to parents, siblings, friends, teachers, and school counsellors is one way to express one’s feelings and sometimes people express their feelings by writing or painting. Remember, it is okay to feel anything. There’s no reason to be afraid of expressing it. Remember, death is natural. It happens to everyone though some are young and some are old when it happens.

Smoking is one of the worst things people do to their body regardless of age. The first time a person tries smoking is almost always awful - your lungs and throat burn and you’ll cough a lot! Sadly, more and more kids start smoking - ignoring the health risks and future problems they face. They think only about ‘now’ and forget they have to deal with ‘later’.

What does it really do to you?Cigarettes contain nicotine which is like a drug. The more you smoke, the more you become physically dependent on nicotine and you get addicted to cigarettes. Every time you smoke a cigarette, you will feel moody and tired, damage your lungs and heart as well as risk lots of health problems like cancer. The more and longer you smoke, the more likely you will develop medical problems and the greater the damage to your body.

What is the cost of smoking?Smoking is an expensive habit and the cost goes up every year! A pack of cigarettes costs about RM9 which means if you buy one packet a day will come to RM3,285 a year! That’s a lot of toys, computer games and sweets.

What if my friends smoke?Alwaystrytogetthemtoquit.Iftheyrefuse, seriouslyconsidernot being around them when they smoke. They may feel a little angry but if you value your health, it is something you need to be careful of. “Second-hand smoke” from someone else’s cigarette can be just as dangerous as smoking itself!

Here are some facts of second-hand smoke:1) It kills thousands of non-smokers worldwide each year from

lung cancer2) In a crowded place, smoking can produce 6 times the

pollution of a busy highway!3) Petssuffertoo!Itcancauseleukaemiaincatsandenlarged

hearts in dogs.4) It ruins the smell and taste of food.5) It causes reddening, itching and watering of the eyes.

My Experience as a Junior ReporterBy Superkidz Club member Shruthi Jayashankar (13 years old)

IT'S CHEETAHLICIOUS!!! I got an opportunity to talk to the girls. They share with us their experiences and memories during the shooting of this Bollywood Fiesta!

THE CHEETAH GIRLS ONE WORLD

If you’d like a chance to join special events and activities like this, simply join the Superkidz Club! Application form is available on page 5. Sample of original, written work is required to be considered

as a Junior Reporter.

Yo! OMG! It is sooo… thrilling to actually be a junior reporter for the most awesome magazine KIDZ/ SUPERKIDZ…..I feel in me the tinkling excitement in this new cap. It gives me great pride and

a sense of responsibility to do my best in making my fellow Superkidz Club members happy. This experience will be one of my greatest treasures.

When I was handed the responsibility of interviewing the fabulous (and not to

mention the fascinating!) Cheetah Girls, I was blown away. My emotions ran like a wild horse until I pinned myself up to serious preparation for the interview. I made a questionnaire with input from my best friends and we came up with great stuff. Let’s always remember the secret to SUCCESS begins with the burning desire to SUCCEED.

The interview day was an absolute dream come true. No words can explain the feelings that went through me when I was sitting in the teleconference room. Although I was a little nervous, my confidence was 200% SUPER!!! The girls were amazing and they answered each and every question with great zeal and

excitement.

I really enjoyed every single moment of the interview and had great fun. I hope that you SUPERGROOVY kids would love to read it too! Ta Ta for now!

But before that, here are some info about them:ADRIENNE BAILON (acting as Chanel): a rising music star. A double platinum award winner, she counts Celia Cruz, La Lupe and Selena among her role models and musical influences. She is currently working on her solo album which will be out in 2009.

SABRINA BRYAN (acting as Dorinday): is a trained dancer who debuted her DVD ‘BYOU: The hot New Dance Workout’ and the accompanying CD last year. She started her acting career in the television movie “MRS SANTA CLAUS” and has also appeared on the “THE BOLD AND THE BEAUTIFUL”.

KIELY WILLIAMS (acting as Aquanetta): her singing talent matches her gift for fashion design in the new movie. She has extensively toured with Destiny Child, Nelly and N-SYNC. She has also guest-starred on several television shows. A gifted writer, she is currently working on an advice book for teens.

Now the musical trio continue their journey as friends in THE CHEETAH GIRLS ONE WORLD and take on their new challenge. This time around, it is a whole new movie, with a whole new theme and a whole new location………India! Everything changes when the film’s shrewd producer only wants one Cheetah Girl. In order to choose, the girls have to audition against ….. well….. each other. Who will get selected? Will the cheetah girls reign triumphant? Will their strong friendship fall apart?

I got an opportunity to talk to the girls. The interview was awesome. To the questions posted to them, the girls answered them really well - very cool! They were outright simple and sweet. This experience was simply a mind-blowing one for me as a debutant junior reporter.

Excerpt of the actual interview Here are their memoirs and experiences from the Bollywood Fiesta

• WhatwereyourinitialfeelingswhenyouheardaboutthecrossoverfromHollywoodtoBollywoodinthemovie? Adrienne: We were so excited! We were really thrilled to go India to experience Bollywood, the colours, music and culture. It was really

exciting.

• WhatwasyourexperiencelikeshootinginIndia? Kiely: We spent three weeks shooting in Mumbai, and we got the full-on Bombay experience. And we also shot scenes in Udaipur - it

was amazing! It’s really peaceful and different from Mumbai... a relaxing place to chill out.

• DidyoucomposeanyofyourownsongsinCheetahGirlsOneWorld? Adrienne: We actually did get an amazing opportunity to write our songs. Sabrina’s song is called ‘Crazy on the Dancefloor,’ Kiely is

called ‘The Circle Game', and mine is called ‘Stand Up.’

• Asyouthsintoday’sworld, whatmakesyouhappyorsad? Adrienne: For us, what makes us happy is to see inspiring young women. We love making music that inspires and empowers them.

What makes us sad, I guess, is to see girls not living their lives with enough self esteem and confidence we would love to see in every young woman.

• Whoisyourfashionicon? Kiely: I really like Ashley Olsen, I think she is absolutely fabulous.

• AsCheetahGirls, whatareyourstrengthsandweaknesses? Adrienne: I think that our bond as friends is strength – it is a really creative amazing product for fans to watch & hear – which can

be a kind of weakness.

• WhatisthebestthingyoutrulyenjoyaboutbeingaCheetahGirl? Adrienne: The best thing is meeting our fans and encouraging them. And also representing girl power and being a good influence to

the girls. It really makes us happy.

• Whatexperienceswouldyouliketosharewithotheryoungaspiringartistes, whatyoufeelaboutmusic? Adrienne: Practice and do it every single day and something will come (out) of it. (The) music industry is really tough so you have to

let them love your music and let your dream see you through.

Well guys, if you didn’t catch the premiere screening of CHEETAH GIRLS ONE WORLD on Disney Channel (Astro Channel 615) in November 2008, no worries. Catch the repeat on 31st January (Sat) at 10am! Yeah, it’s going to be a Cheetahlicious treat!

By Choo Ching Yi (Student of Lorna Whiston)

Billy Brown was ecstatic. The house next to his had been empty since he first moved into the quiet neighbourhood. Finally, just when he was about to give up hope on ever getting a neighbour, news arrived that a very interesting family was moving in.

Billy put on his best coat and made his way to have a friendly conversation with his new neighbours, and perhaps invite them over for a nice dinner in the nearby city.

As he approached his new neighbour’s house, he immediately noticed a change in his surroundings. The previously run-down house now looked brighter, and certainly more welcoming than before. The neighbours had planted colourful flowers in their garden. The ground which was previously bare was now filled with neatly-cut, green grass. Billy smiled, happy seeing his neighbours were such decent and joyful people.

Billy walked up to the door and rang the bell. Immediately, the door swung open. There stood a beautiful woman, in her late twenties or early thirties. She looked absolutely delighted as she ushered Billy into her home.

The first thing that caught Billy’s eye was the beautiful fountain in the middle of the brightly lit living room. It was astoundingly grand and the sight of it was exceedingly soothing. The pale yellow walls filled with portraits of beautiful landscapes and scenery brightened the place up.

Billy introduced himself to his new neighbours. The young woman who invited him in, whose name was Mrs. Cailat looked excited and whispered quiet words into her husband’s ear. She then turned to Billy and exclaimed, “You must join us for dinner. We insist!”

Billy agreed. How could anyone possibly say no to such nice people? Mrs. Cailat smiled her wonderful smile and said, “Alright then! Please, sit here for a moment! Dinner will be served shortly!” With that, she walked into the kitchen.

Billy sat down on a nice comfortable sofa. He was extremely happy to have such kind and friendly neighbours. Soon, Mrs. Cailat rushed out with a cup of tea, placed it on the table and left again.

While drinking his tea, in a moment of sudden carelessness and clumsiness, Billy dropped the cup. It smashed onto the floor, leaving a huge mess on the expensive looking carpet. Billy panicked. He tried cleaning up the mess himself with his bare hands, but it just became worse.

Without thinking rationally, Billy went around the house, opening all the cupboards and drawers, trying to find something to clean up the horrible mess he made. Suddenly, he smelled a weird stench hanging around him as he was opening one of the drawers. It smelled like salt and rust, just like blood. Like what any other normal person would have done, out of curiosity, he bent forward to scrutinize the contents of the drawer.

Billy was shocked. There were jars and jars of slimy looking objects. He picked one up and inspected it. He turned it around and turned pale when he read the label stuck onto the jar.

The jar was labelled “Human Intestine (Sally Brooklyn)”.

Billy started trembling. He turned around to search for a door that would get him out of the house. But instead, he found himself face to face with Mrs. Cailat, her eyes full of hunger, ready to pounce...
