For Kids, By KidsTwo years ago, Kidz magazine gave birth to Superkidz. And we dared to do the daring - a magazine made up almost entirely of the creative work of children.

We let our Superkidz Club members, aged three to 15, as well as invited some non-members to let us into the world of creative young people to contribute their articles, commentaries, short stories, poems, reviews, puzzles, jokes, research, photos, artwork or pose as models for Superkidz Magazine.

And, boy, were we right! Who else can better speak in the language of children than the kids, themselves? Who else can imagine things as fabulously and grab the attention of fellow youngsters than the little ones?

We have seen works of astonishing power. We are thrilled to receive children’s works but due to the limited space, we have selected the best jewels that reflect beautiful writing and original ideas that capture a slice of life from the eyes of children. Over time, we have been inspired by these aspiring writers, researchers, reporters, models, photographers and artists that have put in a fresh, lively and strongly felt impact we, adults, can’t possibly make! So in 2010, we continue to encourage children of all ages to contribute to Superkidz.

Aside from being part of our cover models’ pool and Junior Writers’ Guild, you can become our reporter to cover exclusive events, interview personalities, review movies, books, products, services, restaurants and family-oriented establishments. We also encourage you to become philanthropists by getting involved in our charitable and humanitarian projects. At the same time, you can nominate yourself or someone you know to be featured in Superkid where we will write about your academic, athletic, artistic or socio-civic achievements.

But, let’s not forget, the parents and grown-ups to send in contributions on topics like science, nature, technology and other articles that paint pictures of historical events, or that use colourful, down-to-earth imagery to explain the world’s many phenomena.

Superkidz has great respect for the young audience. So we want stories and articles that are relevant to their world and grab the young ones right away. Without writing “down” to children or moralising with them, we want articles that are sensitive to children.

We will continue to celebrate the achievements and foster the creativity of children in Malaysia. Be part of Superkidz. This is your magazine. - Ed.

Although he spent much of his childhood at the house, Andrew has forgotten much but still remembers lots, like the very strong-minded staff. Andrew recalls how his grandfather used to put large vegetables on the roof of the shed and they would vanish in the morning – so weird! He also remembers the very colourful stained-glass window in the kitchen door, which he knows is important to protect.

Into this mix comes young Aidan Cain, who turns up from the orphanage asking for safety. Exactly who he is and why he's there remain unclear, but a strong connection between the two becomes apparent. There is a mystery to be solved, and nothing is as it appears to be. But nobody can solve the mystery, until they find out exactly what it is!

Exemplary. Outstanding. Courageous. Are you a Superkid?Superkid

Talent competitions may be a dime a dozen, but the kids that take part are anything but ordinary! Each of them has their own story to tell and simply love to make their parents proud by excelling. At a recent competition, a few of them certainly stood out from the rest with their amazing performances!

At six years old, the petite Crystal is already performing like a pro! She emerged on stage in an extravagant costume complete

with sparkling headgear and sang beautifully. What set her apart was her excellent showmanship. Crystal actually

went down the stage and greeted everyone by shaking their hands, all the while singing! She was the only one to do so.

Perhaps Crystal’s self-assurance and poise could be attributed to her being quite a ‘veteran’ at performing in public. She

has participated in many singing and talent competitions, as well as being cast as a talent in

numerous commercials. Other than that, she is also the Chinese representative of the 1Malaysia concept

and has performed at many official functions.

When asked if she expected to win, Crystal’s reply was a resounding “yes” – such confidence! Although she is artistically inclined, this young lady’s ambition is to one day become a doctor.

Everyone has a hero they look up to or admire. For the young ones, heroes are people (real or fictional) that they dream of becoming one day. That was the theme of the Magnolia Wonderkids Search 2009 that was a quest for Malaysia’ most outstanding young achievers with heaps of talent, creativity and intellect.

Following a rousing success in 2008, the competition’s aim - to show that there is a wonderkid in every child waiting to be discovered - once again received overwhelming response. Divided into two age groups - Group A (three to six years old) and Group B (seven to 12 years old) - kids from around the country were asked to draw their ‘Inner Super Hero’ and submit it in the preliminary stage of the contest.

The contest period started in September 2009 and ended on 30th November 2009. Then the 100 most creative drawings that impressed the judges were selected and each won a Magnolia hamper. Out of these, a further five children from each group were chosen to compete in the Grand Finale for the grand prize of RM10,000!

On 10th December 2009 at Subang Parade, the selected ten kids were joined by their families, friends and the public who went in full force to show their support. Yup, the East End Concourse area was packed to the brim with spectators! It would have been quite daunting to any entertainer on stage, but all the

children gave roaring performances! Some dressed up as superheroes and did mini sketches, while others danced and sang to their hearts’ content.

Then came the most difficult part of the competition – choosing the winners! After much deliberation, the judges announced Crystal Lee (6) and Ooi Kai Sheng (9) as the winners of Group A and B, respectively. Let’s find out more about them!

January - February 201012

Special Mention – Yong Kai Pei

When Kai Sheng stepped on stage, the audience knew they were in for a visual treat. Fully clad in a cowboy

costume complete with a galloping horse made of cardboard, the charismatic boy came

out with guns blazing - literally! His cowboy persona was even complete with toy guns that fired and popped – how realistic!

Kai Sheng’s performance was about a ‘lone ranger’ who, while

out exploring with his favourite steed, got thirsty. Luckily, he had

brought along a bottle of Magnolia fresh milk and so did not have to worry

about going hungry. Being creative and fully equipped definitely proved to be a winning combination!

On stage, Kai Sheng gave a strong, confident performance. However, off stage, his true nature emerged. When being interviewed, he was so shy and polite that he kept smiling and laughing non-stop! His mum, Yeoh Guat Hoon, confirmed that Kai Sheng is indeed a very shy, nervous lad. So that is why she encourages him to join such talent competitions, as they present a great opportunity for him to break out of his shell.

Prior to this, Kai Sheng had mostly entered colouring and drawing competitions. Last year alone, he participated in nearly 70 such contests, emerging as one of the top three winners in most of them! This goes to show that yes, it is possible for kids to be multi talented!

Kai Pei may only be four years old, but her linguistic skills and level of fluency are no child’s play!

Initially, as she was the first contestant scheduled to go on stage, Kai Pei was totally unprepared.

So when invited on stage, she broke down in tears, and demanded for her mum! After getting over the initial shock though, she was determined to perform. So the judges gave her a ‘confidence boost’ and allowed her to do so after everyone else had performed.

This time, after insisting that mum Tan Law Yong stayed right beside her, the once nervous Kai Pei turned into a gutsy

singer! However, the amazing part was that she sang four songs in four different languages – English, Malay, Chinese and

Tamil with perfect intonation! The audience was positively shocked and gave Kai Pei a resounding round of applause.

Mum Tan Law Yong explained that Kai Pei watches a lot of educational TV programmes, and this has helped her to better understand and converse in English, Malay and Chinese. She learned the multilingual song that she performed at school, and so she actually understands the meaning of the lyrics. During the interview, Kai Pei spoke fluent English and revealed that she even won a trophy at an alphabet writing competition.

For being a brave young girl with a talent for singing, words and languages, Kai Pei definitely deserves a special mention!

So kids, don’t be shy to try your hands at new things. You’ll never know what you’re capable of if you don’t try anything. If you like to perform or have a hidden talent, pluck up your courage and show the world what you can do!

TRUE LEGEND

True Legend is the extraordinary journey of a martial arts hero with great dreams. All his life, Su Can (VINCENT CHIU) has been pursuing the summit in martial arts. There are two things he holds dearest to his heart – the dream of creating a unique kind of martial arts that will pass on to generations; and his beloved wife Xiao Ying (ZHOU XUN). Su has a happy family and his

wife is the joy of his life. But owing to a turn of fate and his own stubbornness, Su falls helplessly into a sticky situation and falls from grace.

On the surface, Su now appears as a beggar gone crazy, getting drunk everyday. He wanders from town to town, becoming a man without

any purpose in the eyes of others. However, all this time during his spiritual exile, his dream for the highest peak in martial arts is still alive. The harsh conditions of life have not dampened his determination in perfecting his skills. He conjures up scenes where

he combats the legendary Lord of Wushu (JAY CHOU) with whom he refines his skills and achieves a peace of mind.

Meanwhile, the Heilongjiang Province where Su resides falls under foreigners’ rule. One day, a crisis happens that

threatens the life of his young son – the only person Su still cares about and his last bit of human hope. At the critical moment, the flame of life is re-ignited

in Su. He lets out the utmost strength that has lay dormant in him during all his devastated time, and it becomes the strongest school of

fists that the martial arts world has ever known. Thus is the story of Su Can and the famous “Drunken Fist”, which is based on the story of a real-life hero.

Hi kids, and welcome to the Aerospace Adventure Zone! This section is dedicated to those of you who get a real kick out of astronomy, space science, aeronautics and things that fly! Learn about the planets and our solar system.

A Voyage through the Solar System

We now move on to our final destination on our epic adventure through the solar system.

That blazing ball of light that makes life on Earth possible is truly a remarkable thing. It’s very, very big (1.4 million km in diameter), very, very hot and extremely dangerous if you get too close. Everyday, our Earth is bathed in sunlight.

Whilst we know it’s a yellowish white ball in the sky, we also know it is very dangerous to look at it with our eyes because the intense light can damage our vision.

Sometimes you can see the sun more easily during sunset when it’s a big orange ball near the horizon. But even then, it’s not a very good idea to look at it for too long. The only way to see the sun safely is by

using special filtered lenses made specially for solar observation.

So just what is the Sun made of? Many students think that the Sun is made from fire. Well that is totally not the case! For the most part, it is made from a gas called hydrogen.

Hydrogen is the most common element in the universe and almost all stars are made of the same material. There are vast quantities of hydrogen in the sun, so much, in fact, that there is enough to keep the Sun going for at least another three to four billion years.

Now let’s imagine we are on a very special spacecraft that could travel to the Sun. We will start our journey from inside the orbit of Mercury and travel on a direct path toward the Sun.

On the way, we will be able to observe just what this amazing star is all about. Okay, let’s go!

As we descend toward the Sun, we have to travel through what is called the solar Corona. This is a super heated region of space around the Sun that is actually hotter than the surface of the Sun. We can see the solar corona only with special telescopes or during a total solar eclipse.

Scientists are not sure why the Corona is hotter than the surface of the Sun. One theory suggests that powerful magnetic fields contribute to the heating of this region. The Corona is heated to over a million degrees centigrade at certain points.

So now that we have traversed the searing heat of the solar Corona, we continue down further toward the photosphere which, in a way, can be called the surface of the Sun. In fact, the Sun doesn’t really have a surface because it is made of gas. The photosphere is the part of it that we can see everyday. It’s the point at which all the heat, light and energy leave the Sun towards space.

If you look at the Sun using a special telescope, you can see that the photosphere is made up of billions of little blobs. In fact, it looks very similar to the surface of an orange! These blobs are huge columns of superheated gas that rise toward the surface of the Sun and then cool and sink down again. They are called granules.

As we fly over the photosphere, we look out and can see huge loops and fountains of hot plasma and gas bursting out from the photosphere, arcing over and then plunging back down again. The photosphere is constantly in action and always boiling and changing from one hour to the next.

Next, we pass over w h a t looks like a massive dark patch below. This is a sunspot that is relatively cool in comparison to the rest of the photosphere. Sunspots are magnetic storms that occur in cycles of 11 years on the Sun’s surface.

At the moment, we are going through a quiet period of sunspots so they are not always visible. When the sunspot period is at its maximum (in about four years from now), you can sometimes see dozens of sunspots on the surface of the Sun at any one time.

We now decelerate and punch down into the sunspot we have just seen below. The temperature outside is now more than 6000°C - enough to vaporise steel!

As we pass through the sunspot, we can see vast fingers of hot gas and plasma curling and twisting in the high energy magnetic fields around it.

Further on down toward the centre of the Sun, we pass through to what is called the convective zone.

This is a layer of the Sun that is about 200,000km thick. Primarily, it is made up of superheated hydrogen gas that boils up toward the surface, cools and then sinks back down again. It is the way in which most of the heat and light from the sun is transported from the core to the surface.

Continuing further down at a distance of 200,000 km from the surface, we pass from the convective zone to the radiative zone. The temperature outside is now approaching nearly seven million degrees! The radiative zone is extremely hot and is responsible for transferring the energy from the Sun’s core directly to the convective zone.

Now we must slow down as we approach the core of the Sun. The outside temperature is approaching 10 million°C and the pressure is enormous.

From a distance we can observe how atoms of hydrogen are being forced together at huge pressures and temperatures in the region of 16-17 million°C to form molecules of helium. As the hydrogen atoms are squeezed together, they give off huge amounts of energy.

About four million tons of hydrogen is gobbled up every second in the Sun’s core. This energy is the key to all the Sun’s incredible power, and the fusing of hydrogen at the core is called nuclear fusion.

Sometimes, huge explosions occur on the Sun’s surface called Coronal Mass Ejections or CMEs. CMEs can influence Earth’s environment and occasionally cause difficulties in radio communication or, even worse, cause whole electrical power grids to shut down.

The Sun pours out energy every second of every day in every direction. The energy travels through space as solar wind. We can see its effect in the auroras that occur near the North and South poles on Earth. Thankfully, our planet has a special protective shield against the solar wind - the magnetic field. If Earth did not have a magnetic field, then our home in space would be a very different place indeed.

So now we return to our beautiful blue world, knowing that it is really a very unique and special place. We must care for our planet and ensure that it will continue to protect and provide a home for all living things for thousands of years to come.

In the next issue, we will discuss the BIG stuff. Our Sun is in fact a puny little dwarf star. Hardly worth a mention. Wait until I introduce you to its monster cousin…and when I say monster, I really mean MONSTER!

Disney Movie Treat! Members’

We took an entire theatre hall and reserved all 220 seats for our SC Members. Then we gave an advanced screening of a Walt Disney animation. That’s how spoilt our club members are!

Boys and girls belonging to the Superkidz Club were treated to the exclusive premiere of The Princess and The Frog over the holidays where they were among the first to view the 2D hand-drawn musical animation by Walt Disney Animation Studios.

Families with their little ones giggled with delight to the comic twist of the timeless love story executed in the musical tradition of Beauty and the Beast, Lion King and Aladdin.

Parents and kids alike were surprised by the wacky version of the classic fairytale where the princess kisses the frog but the outcome was not the one they expected.

Watch out for future movie releases where SC Members can get a first glimpse of future blockbuster hits! Only at Superkidz Club!

It was an unusual Wednesday afternoon. I was trying to do a

sum but I kept worrying about one of my classmates, even though she wasn’t my friend. Her name is Dacinta and the reason I am concerned about her is because lately, she’s been acting strange.

For instance, every time people look at her, she seems to have a faraway look and is deeply engrossed in her own thoughts. She used to be full of life and always cheerful. But now, she seems to have changed into a completely different person - A stranger, in fact.

Before I could think of anything else, my teacher, Ms. Amelia, slammed a worksheet onto my table. She slammed it so hard the table shook and rattled and it made a loud thump! After I had finished my worksheet, I walked up to Ms. Amelia’s table to hand it in.

Ms. Amelia saw me looking worried and asked me, “Whatever is the matter Tisha? You do seem distracted.” So, I told her, “I’m concerned about Dacinta. Do you know why she is acting so weird?”

Ms. Amelia explained, “Her mother was injured in a snatch theft incident. She didn’t let go when the snatch thief yanked her handbag. She was dragged along the street and fractured her skull when she hit the sidewalk. She was in a coma and passed away a couple of days later.”

Even though it’s been two weeks, Dacinta is still badly affected by it. She even said that she will kill herself just to be with her mother in heaven. She blames God for the loss of her mother. She is the saddest person I know. “She doesn’t have any more friends because her classmates are afraid that Dacinta will bring bad luck to their families,” said Ms. Amelia.

When Ms. Amelia finished explaining, I felt like I wanted to cry. I knew I had to do something, but what? That’s when I realised that all Dacinta needed was a friend. I am going to be that friend, the kind of person who wouldn’t leave her side and protect her.

So, I started approaching her. I always talked and played games with her. I always cheer her up when she is down. She has started to recover but she’s still very sad. Though Dacinta seems better, I realised no matter how I tried, my new best friend will always have a part of her heart that remains dark.
