2.1 – Identify a highly respected external partner to conduct an “equity audit” – Complete
• RPS has selected the Education Trust, nationally recognized as a key leader in the fight for educational equity. The Education Trust will conduct an analysis of a number of factors, including: academic achievement, academic opportunity, academic rigor, teacher qualifications, culture/climate, and funding in Richmond Public Schools.
• The analysis and reporting will examine inequities within schools, between schools, by race/ethnicity, by income level, by students with disabilities, and by English language learners.

3.1 – Launch strategic planning process – Complete
• The Strategic Planning Process launched on 5/7. RPS will be holding over 150 engagement sessions to gather input from all stakeholders. The division also launched a website to provide the opportunity for any member of the community to share their dreams for the future of RPS (rvaschools.net).

3.2 – Launch philanthropic effort – Complete
• The RPS Education Fund has already raised $150,000 to help with the strategic planning process, with the goal of raising an additional $100,000 to support this effort. Once the plan is complete, the Education Fund will embark on a multi-year effort to raise several million dollars to support the implementation of the plan.

3.3 – Engage the Council of Great City Schools to conduct a budget audit of RPS – Complete
• The Council is convening a Strategic Support Team of former and current senior managers with extensive experience in managing the financial operations in other major urban school systems across the country to conduct this audit.
• The Team will be reviewing various documents, reports and data prior to a three-to-four-day site visit to Richmond. During the site visit, the Teams will conduct interviews with staff members and review financial and other documentation, as necessary.
• The audit will be take place, on site, from June 5-8 with a full report to follow.

3.4 – Meet with the Virginia DOE to chart a path towards full accreditation by 2023 – Complete
• The RPS Leadership Team has met with the leadership of the VA Office of School Improvement (which oversees the Memorandum of Understanding) to begin the process of creating a multi-year accreditation plan.

3.5 – Establish a task force to ensure all schools are fully staffed for next school year – Complete
• A task force, led by RPS’ talent acquisition team, now meets bi-weekly as they work towards this big goal (100% of vacancies identified by July 1 will be filled for the first day of school). The task force identifies challenges, tracks progress, and outlines ways that all members of central office can support these efforts.

3.6 – Launch “RPS Student of the Month” – Complete
• The RPS Shines! Student of the Month for May 2018 was Mahki Riley . Mahki is an 8th grader at Albert Hill Middle School.
• Mahki demonstrates all three RPS core elements of Resilience, Pride, and Success at Albert Hill. Mahki’s math teacher, Elana Patrizia, who nominated him for the award, has especially seen his resiliency on display in her class. He has worked hard this year to develop his study habits, and he has become a much stronger and more successful student as a result of his effort. He also shows his pride in his school by being kind to others, being honest, and going the extra mile.

3.7 – Launch “RPS Educator of the Month” – Complete
• The RPS Shines! Educator of the Month for May 2018 was Apryl-Dawn Julien. She is an inspiring and engaging 3rd grade teacher at Fairfield Court Elementary School.
• Ms. Julien employs sensory and mindfulness techniques throughout the day to help empower her students to self-regulate their emotions and behavior. Her use of trauma-informed strategies and relationship-building with her students creates a connection for them to truly engage with the high-quality instruction she delivers. “Ms. Julien is a master teacher,” said one of her fellow educators in nominating her. “I love going into her classroom! She works hard to challenge her students, and I have seen them flourish in her care.”

3.8 – Launch “Support Staff Member of the Month” – Complete
• The RPS Shines! Support Staff Member of the Month for May 2018 was Fanty Polanco. She is the Bilingual Community and Parent Liaison at the RPS Welcome Center for the Office of Family and Community Engagement.
• Ms. Polanco has made a huge impact on so many RPS families who speak Spanish as their first language. Her dedication to her community and passion for her work is evident from the numerous nominations she received. She has visited families in the hospital, attended funerals, helped families find counseling and legal representation…all in addition to helping ensure that all RPS students have access to a high-quality education, no matter what their first language may be. “She is involved in the community which allows her to deeply understand the needs and locate the right resources,” said one nomination. “She is always kind, friendly, and efficient with our requests for assistance.”

3.9 – Provide all managers with two days of training and support
• RPS partnered with The Management Center, an organization dedicated to helping social justice organizations improve their effectiveness through better management.
• The first round of the training was held on April 30 and May 1, with sessions on delegation, setting goals, prioritization, giving feedback, hiring, and more.
• RPS will be offering a second round of the training for all other central office managers on June 25 and 26.
