Message from the PresidentJune 2016

June 2016Greetings Sunburst Members,

The pace has really picked up in the month of May and June looks to be a full month of Corvette fun. Local cruise nights can be found on every night of the week, and there are more than enough weekend car shows to satisfy everyone’s tastes. Don’t forget to post on Facebook or send out a Yahoo blast when you’re headed to one of these events, and you just may have some fellow Sunburst members join you.

I’ve been exceptionally pleased with the work of the 40th Anniversary Committee. We already have 4 events calendared for 2017, Sunburst’s 40th Anniversary Year: a dinner party, a road trip to Bowling Green, a picnic and a road trip to Vermont. Mike and Dee Rosendahl, Forrest and Marilyn Roberts, Lee and Sue Thorsen, Rich Orr and Kris Jensen, and Mike Zorn have been working hard so that our 40th anniversary year will be a memorable one.

I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention the Committee’s efforts to secure a Sunburst brick at the National Corvette Museum. You may have noticed a brick like box at each meeting’s registration table. Well, that’s there to accept your donation (spare change, but folding money is really appreciated) so that we can purchase a $600 commemorative brick and have it installed when the club gets to the National Corvette Museum in June of 2017.

At the May Board meeting it was decided to make a change with our official Sunburst apparel provider. Sunburst is now using Think Ink, in Crystal Lake, for all of our apparel needs. Think Ink has been a long time provider of our car show tee shirts, and now they will handle our custom embroidery work for your personalized Sunburst wear. Think Ink is located just north of Rte 14 right behind Portillos. They carry a full line of clothing from which to choose or you can bring in you own clothing items for embroidery. Along with a new vendor we also have new apparel liasons – Karen Baird and Jean Mumford will be working together to insure a smooth transition and help you get exactly what you want.

Our Annual Car Show is a mere three months away. Gary Gembala and Skip Gallagher have been working hard to put together a class event for all participants and spectators. The primary money-maker at the show is the silent auction, which is being organized by Dee Rosendahl. We need your help in securing items for that auction. Please remember to ask the manager at you favorite restaurant, salon, auto parts store, oil change shop, golf course, etc. if they can support our efforts with a gift or gift certificate. It never hurts to ask.

I look forward to seeing you at the next membership meeting on June 2nd and at all of June’s upcoming events.

Save the Wave,

Mike Stevens

Sunburst Fun Rallye5-22-16

On Sunday, May 22nd, the Sunburst Corvette Club launched its annual Fun Rallye, without the expertise of former Rallyemaster Tom Palmer. 39 cars lined up along the roadside by the Culvers in Woodstock. 32 cars actually participated in the rallye, with two cars from the Windy City Corvette Club and 2 cars from the Wisconsin Corvette Club.

In actuality there were two rallyes run consecutively. The first rallye started in Woodstock and ended in Hampshire. The second rallye started in Hampshire and ended in Sycamore at Sorrentos Ranch on IL 64. The challenging routes were complimented with challenging questions or photos to identify while traveling through the countryside. The first rallye was 34 miles long and the official time was 53 minutes. The second rallye was 41 miles long and the official time was 58 minutes.

The winners of Rallye #1 were: 1st Place- Ray & Janet Elston, 2nd Place – Don and Dee Elliott and 3rd Place- Rich Orr and Kris Jensen and Best Virgins- Don & Sharon Smith.

The winners of Rallye #2 were: 1st Place – Steve & Carol MacCabe, 2nd Place – Lee & Sue Thorson and 3rd Place – Rick & Bonnie Edwardsen, Best Virgins – Tom & Judy Rudolph.

This fun event wouldn’t have been possible without the help of our co-conspiritors : Dave & Julie Thomas, Ron Gliot & Cheryl Favia, Mike & Dee Rosendahl, Jim & Joanni Downing, Tom Marks and Al Higgins. Thank you “BIG TIME”.

Pat & Mike Stevens, Rallyemasters

Example of a 12” X 12” Brick

To Commemorate Sunburst’s 40th AnniversaryA Sunburst Brick at the National Corvette Museum

You may know that a 40th Anniversary Committee has formed and is working on several events during 2017 to recognize this Sunburst Corvette Club milestone.

The 40th Anniversary Committee proposes to purchase a brick at the National Corvette Museum to commemorate Sunburst’s 40th Anniversary.

A sealed “Brick Box” is being placed on the registration table at each membership meeting and at other club events. The Committee hopes that at least $600 will be donated which will enable the Club order a 12” x 12” brick with our 40th anniversary logo and a few lines of copy. The brick will be placed outdoors on the sidewalks leading to the Museum entrance. Also, individual members will have an opportunity to purchase a 4” x 8” brick personal brick to be placed around the Club’s brick for $100 NCM member and $125 Non-member.

Please be generous in helping reach this goal and drop money into the box. If you are unable to regularly attend the membership meetings, please send a check to the Club treasurer, Dee Rosendahl, payable to Sunburst Corvette Club and marked for NCM Brick.

For seven years now, 16-year-old Maddie Bozik has been collecting and distributing winter clothing to underprivileged individuals through her nonprofit Maddies Mitten March. By collaborating with United Way of Fox Valley to School District 129, Maddie has been able to provide hundreds of outerwear items through the donations of clothing and finances.

“Because of the support of generous individuals, other nonprofits and local businesses, I’m able to provide essential winter clothing for Kane County,” Maddie Bozik explained. “, for instance, has cleaned every single coat for the past seven years at no charge. I’m as grateful to them as I am to those who donate.”

In November 2014, Bozik and her family purchased a school bus from St. Charles School District with the goal of converting it to a mobile clothing store. Only a month later, that goal became a reality when Maddies Mitten March school bus took its maiden voyage on Dec. 7, 2014. With clean floors, seats removed, and clothing racks installed, Maddies Mitten March was ready to collect more donations from generous community members and hit the road.

This is a local not for profit group and 100% of the donations go directly to the charity.  No one get paid, everyone is a volunteer. She is an amazing young girl with a goal to help get winter clothing to those who need it and can’t afford it.

Corvette History and Interesting Facts

Bowling Green Corvette Assembly Plant

GM began production of the esteemed Corvette in Bowling Green (KY) in 1981, and the facility has remained the exclusive home of the Corvette for over 30 years. Known around the world as America’s sports car, the Corvette exemplifies the definition of innovation. The Corvette is the world’s longest running, continuously produced passenger car. When the first Corvette rolled of the line over 60 years ago, it was born an icon. GM has continued this reputation for the car with six decades of refinement and innovation, raising the bar for performance cars with each generation. The Corvette Stingray is no exception; man and machine work in harmony to bring to life the perfect balance of technology, design and performance.

Corvette didn’t always call Kentucky home, however. In 1953, the first 300 were built by hand in Flint, Michigan, just after General Motors unveiled the Corvette as a “dream car” in the Motorama show in New York’s Waldorf Astoria hotel. The following year, production moved to St. Louis in June of 1981. Corvette production transferred from St. Louis to Bowling Green, Kentucky. Previously a Chrysler air-conditioning unit factory, the building was completely renovated within 14 months into a modern automotive facility twice the size of the previous structure. At the conclusion of the 1996 production year, the entire plant was gutted to make way for a totally redesigned manufacturing facility for the fifth generation Corvette. Production of the XLR began in June 2003 and ceased on April 30, 2009. The plant built the one millionth Corvette on July 2, 1992 and the 1.5 millionth on May 28, 2009. The 50th anniversary of the Corvette was celebrated in June 2003, marked with a special 50th anniversary Corvette package, and the 30th anniversary of Bowling Green Assembly was celebrated in June 2011.

Car Show Prep Tips

33

Here’s a great tip, using canned air Dust Buster (or a generic “canned air” product) is commonly used to clean computer keyboards. Basically, it is cold, compressed air in a can. It works great for blasting unwanted debris from your car’s nooks and crannies. We’ve used it to blast dust from interior vents and to remove dried, crusty wax residue on the exterior (especially around emblems). The air comes out of the can under high pressure and is extremely cold, so short bursts work best. If you’re concerned about the pressure damaging a part, use from a further distance and try light “bursts” first.

Canned Air Tip from Colin at Ecklers.com

Tailpipe Cleaning Tip from Colin at Ecklers.com

Tailpipes are not generally thought of as much of anything, except to car people who appreciate the completeness of the details. Cleaning and polishing tailpipes is another small step that helps to make your car show that much better. Here, we’re using a 0000 grade steel wool to remove stubborn stains. Finish it off with a little polish – the end result is well worth the effort.

With the car show fast approaching, we are providing tips on how to prep your car for the Competition, over the next few issues of Sunspots. If you have any great ideas you would like you share, please send them to [email protected].

For those of you that run in the parades with your Corvette, we have these vinyl  “stickies” that are 12” square to put on the door or rear window of your Vette. You just wet it, stick it on, and it will stay on all day. When you want to take it off, just peel it off and stick it back on the plastic film backing sheet that it comes with. Additionally, the fine print indicates that having any Corvette, from a rare 1953 to a 25-year-old beater, qualifies the owner for the discount. The offer is good through the end of May.Such discounts are generally rare on the Corvette. The discount brings the cheapest Corvette Stingray to $54,395, including the mandatory destination charge, before any negotiating with a dealer. Buyers may also be able to qualify for additional discounts, like an employee purchase program or special pricing extended to the automaker's numerous suppliers.
