One: From philosopher to the common person, we all seek the key to life. All: What makes a life good? What is life's purpose? One: Some spend their life seeking pleasure, giving themselves to every desire or inclination. All: Pleasure is fleeting, like chasing after the wind. One: Some seek to acquire riches, with all the security and power that comes with them. All: Wealth is temporary, and chasing after the wind. One: Some spend their energy trying to achieve great things and make a name for themselves. All: Accomplishments will soon be forgotten, like chasing after the wind. One: What is left then, but to revere God, and respect on another? Please pray with me...

Kendall Wyckoff *Unison Prayer of Invocation Creator God, thank you for giving us life, with all of its joy and sorrow, success and failure, pain and pleasure. We pray for grateful hearts to appreciate the whole range of human experience. Thank you for giving us freedom to choose how we will use our lives. We pray for wisdom to embrace what is lasting and best, along with courage to stand for what is right and good. We pray for your Spirit to be with us at worship today, with open hearts and minds to listen for your guidance, and inspiration to put it into practice all week long. Amen

Attending to God's Word

Antiphonal Reading of the Psalter Rev. Elizabeth B. Johnson

Psalm 111 Jill A. Truax

Cantor and Congregation

Praise the Lord! I will give thanks to the Lord with my whole heart, in the company of the upright, in the congregation. Great are the works of the Lord, studied by all who delight in them. Full of honor and majesty is God's work, and God's righteousness endures forever. God has gained renown by God's wonderful deeds; the Lord is gracious and merciful. God provides food for those who fear God; God is ever mindful of God's covenant.

Cantor and Congregation

God has shown God's people the power of God's works, in giving them the heritage of the nations. The works of the Lord's hands are faithful and just; all God's precepts are trustworthy. They are established forever and ever, to be performed with faithfulness and uprightness. God sent redemption to God's people; God has commanded God's covenant forever. Holy and awesome is the Lord's name. The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom; all those who practice it have a good understanding. God's praise endures forever.

Cantor and Congregation

A Reading from the Hebrew Scriptures Rev. David W. Johnson

One: The scriptures lead us in the way of life. All: We open our hearts to listen to God's Spirit.

Ecclesiastes 2:1-11 I said to myself, "Come now, I will make a test of pleasure; enjoy yourself." But again, this also was vanity. I said of laughter, "It is mad," and of pleasure, "What use is it?" I searched with my mind how to cheer my body with wine—my mind still guiding me with wisdom—and how to lay hold on folly, until I might see what was good for mortals to do under heaven during the few days of their life. I made great works; I built houses and planted vineyards for myself; I made myself gardens and parks, and planted in them all kinds of fruit trees. I made myself pools from which to water the forest of growing trees. I bought male and female slaves, and had slaves who were born in my house; I also had great possessions of herds and flocks, more than any who had been before me in Jerusalem. I also gathered for myself silver and gold and the treasure of kings and of the provinces; I got singers, both men and women, and delights of the flesh, and many concubines.

So I became great and surpassed all who were before me in Jerusalem; also my wisdom remained with me. Whatever my eyes desired I did not keep from them; I kept my heart from no pleasure, for my heart found pleasure in all my toil, and this was my reward for all my toil. Then I considered all that my hands had done and the toil I had spent in doing it, and again, all was vanity and a chasing after wind, and there was nothing to be gained under the sun.

Response

One: The voice of wisdom reminds us to seek after that which is solid and lasting. All: We seek to follow in the way of wisdom.

Anthem "Abide With Me" Angelo M. Read

Rachel E. Carter, soprano Adriana Stenvik, cello

Jill A. Truax, piano

Abide with me: fast falls the eventide; The darkness deepens; Lord, with me abide: When other helpers fail, and comforts flee,

Help of the helpless, O abide with me. O abide with me; abide with me.

Swift to its close. ebbs out life's little day;

Earth's joys grow dim, its glories pass away; Change and decay in all around I see;

O Thou, who changest not, abide with me; O abide with me; Abide with me.

Hold thou thy cross before my closing eyes;

shine through the gloom and point me to the skies; Heaven's morning breaks, and earth's vain shadows flee;

In life, in death, O Lord, abide with me; O abide with me; abide with me.

Pastoral Prayer and The Lord's Prayer Rev. David W. Johnson

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day, our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.

And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen

Unison Prayer of Dedication Kendall Wyckoff

Generous God, you have given us a ministry to carry out and the means to make it happen. We offer these offerings as a way of providing food to the hungry, shelter for those without homes, and welcome to all who need to know your immeasurable love. Use them, we pray, in service of your eternal kingdom. Amen
