Special Hymns RESURRECTION TROPARION - TONE 7

By Your Cross You destroyed death. To the thief You opened Paradise. For the

Myrrhbearers You changed weeping into joy. And You commanded Your disciples, O

Christ God, to proclaim that You are risen, granting the world great mercy.

THEOPHANY TROPARION - TONE 1

When You, O Lord, were baptized in the Jordan, the worship of the Trinity was made

manifest. For the voice of the Father bore witness to You, calling You His Beloved Son;

and the Spirit in the form of a dove confirmed the truthfulness of His word. O Christ our

God, You have revealed Yourself, and have enlightened the world, glory to You!

MARTYRS HERMYLUS & STRATONICUS TROPARION - TONE 4

Your holy martyrs Hermýlus and Stratonicus, O Lord, through their sufferings have

received incorruptible crowns from You, our God. For having Your strength, they laid low

their adversaries, and shattered the powerless boldness of demons. Through their

intercessions save our souls!

RESURRECTION KONTAKION - TONE 7

The dominion of death can no longer hold mankind captive, for Christ descended,

shattering and destroying its powers. Hell is bound, while the Prophets rejoice and cry:

“The Savior has come to those in faith; enter, you faithful, into the Resurrection!”

THEOPHANY KONTAKION - TONE 1

Today You have shone forth to the world, O Lord, and the light of Your countenance has

been marked on us. Knowing You, we sing Your praises. You have come and revealed

Yourself, O unapproachable Light.

Instead of “It is truly meet,” we sing:

Magnify, O my soul, the Most-Pure Virgin Theotokos, more honorable and more glorious

than the heavenly hosts.

No tongue knows how to praise you worthily, O Theotokos; even Angels are overcome with

awe praising you. But since you are good, accept our faith; for you know our love inspired

by God. You are the defender of Christians, and we magnify you.

MATINS GOSPEL: 10th Resurrection Gospel: John 21:1-14

At that time, Jesus showed Himself again to the disciples at the Sea of Tiberias, and in

this way He showed Himself: Simon Peter, Thomas called the Twin, Nathanael of Cana in

Galilee, the sons of Zebedee, and two others of His disciples were together. Simon Peter

said to them, “I am going fishing.” They said to him, “We are going with you also.” They

went out and immediately got into the boat, and that night they caught nothing. But

when the morning had now come, Jesus stood on the shore; yet the disciples did not know

that it was Jesus. Then Jesus said to them, “Children, have you any food?” They an-

swered Him, “No.” And He said to them, “Cast the net on the right side of the boat, and

you will find some.” So they cast, and now they were not able to draw it in because of the

multitude of fish. Therefore that disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, “It is the Lord!”

Now when Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he put on his outer garment (for he

had removed it), and plunged into the sea. But the other disciples came in the little boat

(for they were not far from land, but about two hundred cubits), dragging the net with

fish. Then, as soon as they had come to land, they saw a fire of coals there, and fish laid

on it, and bread. Jesus said to them, “Bring some of the fish which you have just caught.”

Simon Peter went up and dragged the net to land, full of large fish, one hundred and fifty-

three; and although there were so many, the net was not broken. Jesus said to

them, “Come and eat breakfast.” Yet none of the disciples dared ask Him, “Who are

You?”—knowing that it was the Lord. Jesus then came and took the bread and gave it to

them, and likewise the fish. This is now the third time Jesus showed Himself to His disci-

ples after He was raised from the dead.

EPISTLE: Ephesians 4:7-13

DEACON: Let us pay attention.

PRIEST: Peace be unto all!

READER: And with your spirit!

DEACON: Wisdom.

READER: The Prokeimenon in the First Tone: Let Your mercy, O Lord, be upon us, as

we have set our hope on You!

CHOIR: Let Your mercy, O Lord, be upon us, as we have set our hope on You!

READER: v: Rejoice in the Lord, O you righteous, praise befits the just.

CHOIR: Let Your mercy, O Lord, be upon us, as we have set our hope on You!

READER: Let Your mercy, O Lord, be upon us...

CHOIR: ...as we have set our hope on You!

DEACON: Wisdom!

READER: The Reading is from the Epistle of the Holy Apostle Paul to the Ephesians.

DEACON: Let us attend!

READER: Brethren, to each one of us grace was given according to the measure of

Christ’s gift. Therefore He says: “When He ascended on high, He led captivity captive, and

gave gifts to men.” (Now this, “He ascended”—what does it mean but that He also first

descended into the lower parts of the earth? He who descended is also the One who

ascended far above all the heavens, that He might fill all things.) And He Himself gave

some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers, for

the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ,

till we all come to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a perfect

man, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ.

PRIEST: Peace be unto you, reader!

READER: And with your spirit! Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia!

CHOIR: Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia!

READER: I will sing of Your mercies, O Lord, forever; with my mouth I will proclaim

Your truth from generation to generation.

CHOIR: Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia!

READER: For you have said: Mercy will be established forever; your truth will be

prepared in the heavens.

CHOIR: Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia!

LITURGY GOSPEL: Matthew 4:12-17

At that time, when Jesus heard that John had been put in prison, He departed to

Galilee. And leaving Nazareth, He came and dwelt in Capernaum, which is by the sea, in

the regions of Zebulun and Naphtali, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Isaiah

the prophet, saying: “The land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, by the way of the sea,

beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles: The people who sat in darkness have seen a

great light, and upon those who sat in the region and shadow of death

Light has dawned.” From that time Jesus began to preach and to say, “Repent, for the

kingdom of heaven is at hand.”

Synaxarion

The Holy Martyrs Hermylus and Stratonicus, Slavs by origin, lived at the beginning of the

fourth century during a persecution against Christians by the emperor Licinius (311-324).

Saint Hermylus served as deacon in the city of Singidunum (Belgrade). Condemned by

Licinius to imprisonment, he was long and cruelly tortured for Christ, but he remained

unyielding.

Hermylus mocked the pagan gods, calling them deaf, dumb, and blind idols. In anger

Licinius ordered more severe torments for him, saying that he could avoid them if he

would offer sacrifice. The holy martyr predicted that Licinius would suffer terrible wounds

himself because he worshiped idols instead of the Creator. His words came true, for

Licinius was killed in 324.

After three days Hermylus was brought before the tribunal again and asked whether he

would avoid more torture by offering sacrifice. The saint replied that he would offer

worship and sacrifice only to the true God.

Saint Hermylus prayed that the Lord would give him strength to endure his torments and

triumph over the pagans. A voice was heard saying, “Hermylus, you will be delivered from

your suffering in three days, and will receive a great reward.” The torturers fell to the

ground in fear, and took the saint back to prison.

Saint Stratonicus was one of the prison guards and a secret Christian. Seeing the

agonizing torments of his friend, he was unable to keep from weeping, and he revealed

that he was a Christian. They also subjected him to punishment.

After the torture, they put both martyrs into a net and threw them into the Danube. On

the third day, the bodies of the saints were found by Christians on the bank of the river

and buried near Singidunum. Their venerable heads were in the Church of Hagia Sophia,

where the Russian pilgrim Anthony saw them in the year 1200.

HOUSE BLESSING 2020 HAS BEGUN

As with previous years, Fr. Chris will be blessing homes according to the zip code schedule

printed in the bulletin. You will receive a call and/or email one or two days beforehand,

letting you know which day Father will be coming. Please have ready: a candle, a bowl of

water, the list of names you would like Fr. Chris to pray for, both living and departed.
