And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only-begotten Son of God: Begotten of the Father before all ages; Light of Light, True God of True God, Begotten, not made; one in Essence with the Father, by Whom all things were made:

Who for us men and for our Salvation

came down from Heaven, and was Incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary, and became Man;

And was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate, and suffered and was buried;

And on the Third Day He rose again, according to the Scriptures;

And ascended into Heaven, and sits at the right Hand of the Father;

And He shall come again with Glory to Judge the living and the dead; Whose Kingdom shall have no end.

And I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, and Giver of Life, Who

proceeds from the Father, > Who with the Father and the Son together is Worshipped and Glorified, Who spoke by the Prophets;

And I believe in One Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church;

I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins;

Neither shall the wicked be near Thee nor shall the unjust abide before Thine Sight. Thou despise all workers of iniquity; Thou will destroy all who speak lies. The bloody and deceitful man the Lord abhors.

As for me: in the multitude of Thy Mercy, I will enter Thy House; I will worship towards Thy Holy Temple in fear of Thee. O Lord, guide me, in Thy Righteousness because of my enemies; direct my way in Thy Sight. For there is no Truth in their mouths and their hearts are vain. Their throats are like open sepulchres. They deal deceitfully with their tongues. Judge them, O God. Let them fall from their devices; according to the multitude of their wickedness cast them out for they have provoked Thee, O Lord.

O Master, Lord Jesus Christ our God, Who art patient with our sins, and Who has brought us even to the present hour, in the which, as Thou hung upon the Life-giving Tree Thou made a Way into Paradise for the Penitent Thief, and by Death destroyed Death:

Cleanse us sinners, Thine unworthy servants; for we have sinned and have dealt iniquitously, and we are not worthy to lift up our eyes and look upon the heights of Heaven, inasmuch as we have departed from the Path of Thy Righteousness, and have walked after the desires of our own hearts.

adversary, and forgive us our sins, and mortify in us carnal imagination;

Thus putting off the Old Man, we may be clothed upon with the New Man, and may live in Thee, our Master and Benefactor.

And, so by obeying Thy

Commandments, we may attain Rest Eternal, where all those who rejoice abide.

For Thou art in verily the True Joy and Exultation of those who Love Thee, O Christ our God

> And to Thee we ascribe all Glory, together with the Father, Who is Without Beginning, and Thine All-Holy, Good, and Life-giving Spirit, now and ever, and to the ages of ages.

For in the time of trouble He shall hide me in His pavilion; in the secret place of His tabernacle He shall hide me; He shall set me high upon a rock.

And now my head shall be lifted up above my enemies all around me. Therefore I will offer sacrifices of Joy in His Tabernacle; I will sing, yes, I will sing praises to the Lord.

Hear, O Lord, when I cry with my voice! Have mercy also upon me, and answer me.

When Thou said, "Seek My Face," my

heart said to Thee, "Thy Face, Lord, I will seek."

Do not hide Thy Face from me; do not turn Thy servant away in anger; Thou hast been my help; do not leave me nor forsake me, O God of my Salvation.

When my Father and my Mother

forsake me, then the Lord will take care of me.

Teach me Thy Way, O Lord, and lead me in a smooth path, because of my enemies.

Do not deliver me to the will of my adversaries; for false witnesses have risen against me breathing out violence.

I would have lost heart, unless I had believed that I would see the Goodness of the Lord in the land of the living.

Wait on the Lord; be of good courage,

and He shall strengthen your heart; wait, I say, on the Lord!

And the people asked him, saying: What then shall we do? And he answering, said to them: He who has two coats, let him give to him who has none; and he who has meat, let him do in like manner.

And the Publicans also came to be Baptised, and said to him: Teacher, what shall we do? But he said to them: Do nothing more than that which is appointed you.

And the soldiers also asked him, saying: And what shall we do? And he said to them: Do violence to no man; neither slander any man; and be content with your pay.

And as the people were of opinion, and all were thinking in their hearts of John, that perhaps he might be the Christ; John answered, saying to all: I indeed Baptise you with water; but there shall come One mightier than I, the latchet of Whose sandals I am not worthy to loosen: He shall Baptise you with the Holy Spirit, and with Fire; and will gather the Wheat into His Barn; but the chaff He will burn with Unquenchable Fire.

For this was him of whom was spoken of by Isaiah the Prophet, saying, A voice of one crying in the desert, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make straight His paths.

And the same John wore a garment of camel’s hair, and a leather belt about his waist: and he ate locusts2 and wild honey.

Then the people of Jerusalem and all Judaea, and all the country about Jordan went out to him: And were Baptised by him in the Jordan, confessing their sins.

1 ALLELUIA IS THE ETERNAL, HEAVENLY ANTHEM OF JOY AND PRAISE TO GOD. IT MEANS: LET US PRAISE THE LORD!

2 THE LOCUSTS REFERRED TO HERE WERE IN FACT THE YOUNG SHOOTS OF THE LOCUST TREE – NOT THE INSECTS!

Wash me yet more from my iniquity,

and cleanse me from my sin. For I know my iniquity, and my sin is always before me.

To Thee only have I sinned, and have done evil before Thee: that Thou may be justified in Thy Words, and may overcome when Thou art judged.

For behold I was conceived in iniquities; and in sins did my mother conceive me.

For behold Thou has loved Truth: the uncertain and hidden things of Thy Wisdom Thou has revealed to me.

Thou shalt sprinkle me with hyssop, and I shall be cleansed: Thou shalt wash me, and I shall be made whiter than snow.

To my hearing Thou shalt give Joy and Gladness: and the bones that have been humbled shall rejoice.

You mountains, that you skipped like rams, and you hills, like lambs of the flock?

At the Presence of the Lord the earth was moved, at the Presence of the God of Jacob: Who turned the rock into pools of water, and the stony hill into fountains of waters.

Not to us, O Lord, not to us: but to Thy Name give Glory for Thy Mercy, and for Thy Truth’s sake: lest the Gentiles should say: Where is their God?

Our God is in Heaven: He has done all things whatsoever He Willed.

The idols of the Gentiles are silver and gold, the works of the hands of men. They have mouths but cannot speak: they have eyes but cannot see;. they have ears but cannot hear; they have noses but cannot smell; they have hands but cannot feel; they have feet but cannot walk and neither can they cry out through their throats.

Let those who make them become like them: and all those who trust in them.

Turn away Thy Face from my sins, and blot out all my iniquities.

Create a clean heart in me, O God: and renew a right spirit within my bowels.

Cast me not away from Thy Face; and take not Thy Holy Spirit from me.

Restore to me the Joy of Thy Salvation, and strengthen me with a Perfect Spirit.

I will teach the unjust Thy ways: and the wicked shall be converted to Thee.

Deliver me from bloodguiltiness, O God, Thou God of my Salvation: and my tongue shall extol Thy Justice.

O Lord, Thou will open my lips: and my mouth shall declare Thy praise.

For if Thou had desired sacrifice, I would indeed have given it: with burnt offerings Thou will not be delighted.

A sacrifice to God is an afflicted spirit: a contrite and humbled heart, O God Thou will not despise.

Deal favourably, O Lord, in Thy Good Will with Zion; so that the walls of Jerusalem may be built up.

Then shalt Thou accept the Sacrifice of Justice, Oblations and whole Burnt Offerings: then shall they lay calves upon Thine Altar.

PRIEST Let us attend! Wisdom! Let us attend!

READER Brethren, it came to pass, while Apollos was at Corinth, that Paul, having passed through the upper coasts, came to Ephesus and found certain disciples.

And he said to them: Have you received the Holy Spirit since you believed?

But they said to him: We have not so much as heard whether there be a Holy Spirit. And he said: In what then were you Baptised? Who said: In John’s Baptism.

Then Paul said: John Baptised the people with the Baptism of Penance, saying: That they should believe in Him Who was to come after him, that is to say, in Jesus.

Having heard these things, they were Baptised in the Name of the Lord Jesus.

As it is written in the Prophets, Behold, I send My Messenger before Thy Face, which shall prepare Thy Way before Thee.

The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the Way of the Lord, make His Paths straight.

John Baptised in the wilderness, and preached the Baptism of Repentance for the remission of sins.

And there went out to him all the land of Judaea, and they of Jerusalem, and were all Baptised by him in the River Jordan, confessing their sins.

And John was clothed with camel’s hair, and with a belt of skin about his loins; and he ate locusts and wild honey.

PRIEST Wisdom! Let us attend!

READER Brethren, do you not know that all of us who are Baptised in Christ Jesus, are Baptised into His Death?

For we are buried together with Him by Baptism into Death; that as Christ is Risen from the dead by the Glory of the Father, so we also may Walk in Newness of Life.

For if we have been planted together in the likeness of His Death, we shall be also in the likeness of His Resurrection.

Knowing this, that our Old Man is crucified with Him, that the body of sin may be destroyed, to the end that we may serve sin no longer.

For he who is dead is Justified from sin.

Divine Head and falter not, O Prophet. Let it be now; for I have come to fulfil all Justice. Be not doubtful, therefore, at all; for verily, I have come to destroy Arhon of darkness, the Contender, who hides in the waters, now rescuing the world from his traps, and granting Eternal Life, since I Am the Lover of mankind.

VERSEVERSEVERSEVERSE Therefore will I remember Thee

Today it is time for the Prophecy of the Psalms to take effect; for it said that the sea beheld and ran away; and Jordan turned back from the Face of the Lord, from the Face of the God of Jacob, Who came to accept Baptism from a servant, so that having been washed from abominable idolatry, our souls may be Illuminated by Him.

VERSE The waters saw Thee, O God, the

waters beheld Thee and were afraid

> Glory to the Father, and to the Son,

and to the Holy Spirit

Why are thy waters troubled, O Jordan,

and why do you turn backward, not proceeding forward according to your natural flow? It shall answer: I cannot bear a Consuming Fire. Therefore, I marvel and tremble at Thy exceeding Condescension; for I Am not accustomed to wash the Pure; I have not learnt to purify the Sinless One; but to purify impure vessels; for Christ Who Baptised in me teaches me to burn the thorns of sins. And John, the voice of the Word, testifies with me, crying: Behold the Lamb of God Who bears the sin of the world! Let us believers therefore cry to Him:

> O God Who had appeared for our Salvation, Glory to Thee!

Now and for ever, and to the Ages of

The River Jordan receded of old by the mantle of Elisha when Elijah ascended to Heaven; and the water was separated to this side and that, the wet element turning into a dry path for him, being truly a Symbol of Baptism, by which we cross the path of transient age. Christ appeared in the Jordan to Sanctify its waters.

Now and ever, and to the Ages of Ages.

Amen

As there is no boldness in us because of the multitude of our sins, do Thou, O Virgin Theotokos, Intercede with the Son Whom Thou hast Borne, for the Entreaty of a Mother has Great Power to win the favour of the Master.

Despise not, O All Venerable Lady, the Prayers of sinners, for He Who took upon Himself to suffer for our sake is Merciful and Strong to Save.

They have set fire to Thy Sanctuary: they have defiled the Dwelling Place of Thy Name on the earth.

They said in their heart, the whole kindred of them together: Let us abolish all the Festival Days of God from the land.

Our Signs we have not seen, there is now no Prophet: and He will know us no more.

How long, O God, shall the enemy reproach: is the adversary to provoke Thy Name forever?

Why dost Thou turn away Thy Hand:

and Thy right Hand out of the midst of Thy Bosom forever?

But God is our King before ages: He has wrought Salvation in the midst of the earth.

By Thy Strength Thou make the sea firm: Thou crushed the heads of the dragons in the waters.

Thou broke the heads of the dragon: Thou gave him to be meat for the people of the Ethiopia .

Thou broke up the fountains and the torrents: Thou dried up the Ethan rivers.

Thine is the day, and Thine is the night: Thou made the morning light and the sun.

Thou made all the borders of the earth: the summer and the spring were formed by Thee.

Remember this, the enemy has

reproached the Lord: and a foolish people have provoked Thy Name.

Do not Deliver up to beasts the souls who confess to Thee: and forsake not to the end the souls of the poor.

Observe Thy Covenant: for the ambiguous of the earth have been filled with dwellings of iniquity.

Let not the humble be turned away with confusion: the poor and needy shall praise Thy Name.

Arise, O God, judge Thy own cause: remember Thy reproaches with which the foolish man has

I cried to the Lord with my voice; to God with my voice; and He heard me.

In the day of my trouble I sought God, with my hands lifted up to Him in the night, and I was not deceived.

My soul refused to be comforted: I

remembered God, and was delighted, and was exercised, and my spirit swooned away.

My eyes prevented the watches: I was

troubled and I spoke not.

I meditated upon the days of old: and I had in my mind the Eternal Years.

And I meditated in the night with my own heart: and I was exercised and I swept my spirit.

Will God then cast off forever? Or will

He never be more favourable again? Or will He cut off His Mercy forever, from generation to generation? Or will God forget to show Mercy? Or will He in His Anger shut up His Mercies?

And I said, Now have I begun: This is the change of the right hand of the Most High.

I remembered the Works of the Lord: for I will be mindful of Thy Wonders since the beginning.

And I will meditate on all Thy Works: and will be employed in Thine Inventions.

Thy Way, O God, is in the Holy Place: Who is the great God like our God?

Thou art the God Who does Wonders. Thou hast made Thy Power known among the Nations: with Thy Arm Thou hast Redeemed Thy people the Children of Jacob and of Joseph.

The waters saw Thee, O God, the waters saw Thee: and they were afraid, and the depths were troubled.

He Who dwells in the Aid of the Most High shall abide under the Protection of the God of Jacob.

He shall say to the Lord: Thou art my Protector, and my Refuge: my God, in Him will I trust.

For He has delivered me from the snare of the hunters: and from the sharp word.

He will overshadow thee with His shoulders: and under His wings thou shalt trust.

His Truth shall compass thee with a shield: thou shalt not be afraid of the terror of the night; Nor the arrow that flies in the day; of the business that walks about in the dark; of invasion, or of the noonday devil.

A thousand shall fall at thy side, and ten thousand at thy right hand; but it shall not come close to thee.

But thou shalt judge with thine eyes: and thou shalt see the reward of the wicked.

Because Thou, O Lord, art my Hope: Thou hast made the Most High Thy Refuge.

There shall no evil come to Thee: nor shall the scourge come near Thy Dwelling.

For He has given His Angels charge over Thee; to keep Thee in all Thy Ways.

In their hands they shall bear Thee up: lest Thou dash Thy Foot against a stone.
