Carden Arbor View School invites students from the
Foothill communities to join us for a Roaring Summer of
adventure, fun, and learning. Designed for motivated and
creative learners, our summer program, presented by
experienced teachers, embraces the ideals of an
education that includes Joy, Growth,
Enthusiasm, Dignity and Respect.
O u r s u m m e r
program combines a
v a r i e t y o f
enriching courses with
several grade level specific
academic courses to insure
students receive an opportunity to
make the most of their summer months at
Carden Arbor View School. Back again this summer is the
opportunity for students to build their day around a family’s b u s y
schedule. Offering four two-week academic and enrichment sessions of
three periods each, students may elect to attend a single course or enjoy a
full day of activities including extended child care from 6:30 a.m. to 6:00
p.m.
Mondays through Thursdays of each session are devoted to instructional
courses offered in two-week sessions. On Fridays, Cougar Tracks and Cub
Tracks give students and teachers an opportunity to enjoy a full day of
unique activities, and always includes lunch, please see the individual session
description. Cub Tracks is designed for younger students and is always an on
campus activity; Cougar Tracks is designed for older students and may be
on or off campus. Cougar Tracks and Cub Tracks require separate
enrollments as they are separate summer program options.

Language Arts Class includes the vowel chart, spelling, parts of
speech, diagramming and composition. Small class
size allows teacher to personalize and create a
specialized program.

Intro to Algebra and Geometry—Grades 7-8 Discuss order of operations, graph and solve linear
equations and inequalities, learn the Cartesian plane
and Pythagorean theorem, identify and apply various
formulas, understand use rules of exponents,
determine relations and functions, identify and
define various 2D & 3D shapes and angles.

French 1—Grades 1-3 Bienvenue a la classe de Français! Students will
exchange greetings and make introductions in a
culturally appropriate manner. Students will learn the
alphabet, numbers, colors, and shapes. They will
introduce themselves to a group in French. Students
will sing traditional French songs, dance and play!

Improv—Using the Imagination—Grades 5-8 Improvisation can be purely comedy-based, a mix of
comedy and drama, or simply drama. It is like
scripted theatre—without the script, the actors are
acting, directing themselves, writing the plot, and
interacting with each other all at the same time.
Improv is spontaneous, entertaining, and fun.

Bead-dazzled—Grades 1-3 Have fun creating unique, one-of-a-kind jewelry while
working on your hand-eye coordination and patterning
skills.

Math Games—Grades 4-6
Let's have fun while learning math. We will play
math games and learn new concepts.
Ms. O’Mullen
iPad Exploration—Grades 6-8 A class where adventure and exploration meet
technology. Students will explore and learn using
purposefully selected iPad apps. Students will work
independently or in small group activities that
incorporate research, problem solving, and application of
basic skills. This course guides student research using
the Internet, specific Apple Applications, and
incorporates problem solving.

Zumba—Grades 3-8 A fun, energetic, dance fitness class. The students will
learn elements of dances from cultures all over the world
while engaging in a fun work out to contemporary music.
They will also learn the basics of how exercise benefits
the body. Includes a short performance on the last day
of class.

Space—Grades 1-3 Let’s explore space and learn about our planets and
constellations.
Ms. Henderson Beginning Ballet—Grades 1-4 Beginning ballet will focus on learning all the basic ballet
positions and movements as well as theory and French
ballet terms. Children will perform what they have
learned on the last day of class.

Cartoons—Grades 1-8
Students will explore their creativity and learn the
techniques necessary to develop ideas into drawings.
Lessons will challenge the student and encourage
imaginative thinking and the process of organizing
thoughts. Drawing techniques include basic shapes,
perspective, shading and foreshortening.

Gardening—Grades 1-3 We will be outside playing in the garden and planters,
learning about the plants that are around our school and
how to care for them. We will also learn about
propagating succulents so that the children can take part
of the Carden Garden home.

Period 1 - 9:00-10:30 a.m.
Math Academy Math basics that cover addition, subtraction,
multiplication, division, word problems, pre-algebra,
algebra, and geometry concepts. Small class size
allows for a personalized lesson plan over the two-
week session.

French 2—Grades 4-6 This is a course for those who have some experience
with French. The class will emphasize communicating
proficiently with special attention to the
development of oral and listening skills, and self-
expression. Classroom activities are varied and
interactive, including listening, speaking, singing,
game playing, reading, and writing.

Jewelry and Beading—Grades 4-8 Create your own jewelry using a variety of crystals,
wood, and metal beads.

WebQuest Adventures—Grades 1-3 Join me on a quest around the world, if you dare!
Explore foreign lands, dive into unique cultures, and
take a walk in the shoes of a westward bound
pioneer! If you are an adventure seeker, this class is
for you. This teacher-created course guides student
research using the Internet while incorporating many
skills such as problem solving.

Fun With Dr. Seuss—Grades 1-3
Crafting and cooking our way through our favorite
Dr. Seuss books.

Cheer & Songleading—Grades 2-5 Participants will learn basic cheer movements along
with basic tumbling, sideline cheers, and chants.
They will make their own poms and t-shirts and
perform a short routine the last day of class.

Language Arts—Grades 7-8 Class includes spelling, parts of speech, diagramming
and composition. Small class size allows teacher to
personalize and create a specialized program.

Watercolor— Grades 5-8 Discover your inner artist and expand your creativity
while producing your own colorful paintings. Have fun
while you learn the theory and techniques of
watercolor in this easy to understand class. Students
will leave class with completed projects.

Books and Crafts—Grades 3-8 Students will make fun crafts inspired by their
favorite books.
Miss Enriquez The Very Hungry Caterpillar—Grades 1-3 Based on the Eric Carle book! Let’s build butterfly
homes for your own very hungry caterpillar! Learn
about the life cycle of the caterpillar and why they
are so important to our environment.

Robotics—Grades 5-8 Using LEGO®MINDSTORMS® EV3 kits, students will
build, program, and test their solutions based on real-
life robotics technology. Students are encouraged to
brainstorm in order to find creative solutions to
problems and then develop them through a process of
selecting, building, testing, and evaluating. The process
encourages cooperation, conversations, and provides
hands-on experience with an array of sensors, motors,
and intelligent units.

Learning about Monologues to Understand
Characterization –Grades 5-8 A Monologue is a scene performed by one person. Even
without a scene partner, the actor should have an
imaginary scene partner that they deliver the lines to
or rather have someone in mind with whom he or she is
talking.

Origami and Kusudama—Grades 3-8 Students will learn to make origami, modular origami,
and be introduced to kusudama. They will have the
opportunity to decorate their favorite pieces and
put them on display for the last day of class. They
will also learn the Japanese history and culture
behind origami and kusudama.

Nutrition & Fitness—Grades 2-5 Students will learn to enjoy, achieve and maintain
overall health and well-being while having fun! They
will experience and practice Yoga, Pilates,
Kickboxing, Zumba, Line Dancing, Kids Resistance
Training, and Kids Insanity. Students will also draw
upon relevant health and nutrition concepts in
authentic, meaningful ways to make healthy food and
physical activity choices on a daily basis.

Time, Measurement, and Money—Grades 1-3 This class will focus on time, length, weight, and
money. Students will work on perfecting their basic
skills while gaining confidence. They will run a class
store as well as participate in a classroom jeopardy
on the last day of class.

Literacy & Culinary Experience—Grades 1-3 Read and discuss stories followed by creating a
recipe that goes along with the book ~ yummy!

Book Report Writing—Grades 4-8 You’ve read the books, now let’s write the report!

Good Food That’s Good for You—Grades 1-8 Cook and prepare delicious and healthy snacks and
meals. You will learn about nutrition while creating a
variety of different food.

Art for All Ages—Grades 2-5
This class is to encourage the children to explore and
express themselves through art activities. Students
will be given the opportunity to work in small groups on
guided activity-based art projects. We will be experi-
encing drawing, painting, printmaking, collage, design
and more. There will be an Art Show at the end of the
session where students will display their work.

All About the Rainforest—Grades 1-4 We will learn all about the Rainforest and the animals
that call it home.
Ms. Henderson Microbiology—Grades 5-8 This course is designed to give a general look into the
exciting world of microbes and other organisms. We
will discuss what organisms are included in microbiolo-
gy and some key concepts about each group. Ms. Pierce
Computer Coding—Grades 5-8 Students are introduced to computer science by learn-
ing functions with parameters, loops, computational
thinking, algorithms, conditionals, and sequencing, using
a combination of block-based programming and un-
plugged activities.

Internet Research—Grades 4-6
Learn how to research people, places and important
events in history and how they impact our lives.

A self-contained program that incorporates the theme for the week into the
art, math, science, pre-reading and reading programs.
Plunge Into Pond Life
A pond is “a small body of still water,” but it is teeming with activity—crickets
chirping, frogs leaping, fish swimming, and turtles sunning. We will use a
collection of activities from across the curriculum and take the plunge.

The aquarium displays the largest collection of Southern California
marine life in the world. Children will be grouped by age,

Walk Around Town for Fun
Grades 1-8
We will start off with a walk to the bowling alley for bowling fun and
then off to Lazer Tag for lunch and a game or two. On the way back to
school we will stop for ice cream. Children will be grouped by age. A
custom misting water bottle is included.

Rocketry—Grades 5-8 Scientific concepts, such as aerodynamics, center of
gravity, point of balance, drag and thrust, problem
solving, calculating formulas, and determining alti-
tude and speed, are discussed. In learning to con-
struct rockets, students must follow directions, read
a diagram and work carefully and precisely. Students
who have already taken rocketry at Carden may build
more advanced (two stage) rockets during the ses-
sion.

will discuss topics like states of matter, density,
light refraction and much more with activities where

Interested in learning about Pinterest crafts? We
will get kids creative juices going and flowing! This
class will feature creative art and craft ideas for all
ages, a little something for everyone! We will create
a new Pinterest craft every day for your child and

Medieval Times Summer Matinee
Grades 1-8
Step back in time and experience spectacular horsemanship, amazing
swordplay, medieval games of skill and an authentic jousting tournament
between six brave knights. As the tournament takes place, the castle’s serfs
and wenches serve you a feast fit for a king!

SSAT Prep—Grades 7-8 The Secondary School Admission Test (SSAT) is a
standardized test that most independent high schools
use in the application evaluation process. This course
will provide the student skills to manage the test,
including developing strategies proven to help students
achieve their desired score. The course includes:
understanding the test structure, strategies for
successfully completing the reading comprehension,
verbal, quantitative, and writing sections.

table and about table manners. So chic! Yummy!

transportation is an integral part of our everyday lives. We will use a
collection of activities from across the curriculum to take a trip!

per session. If periods are not consecutive,
children must be picked up during the break time.
Late pickups will be charged for the next period.
You may register for Cougar/Cub Tracks in
addition to your session OR on its own. Extended
care is also available both in the morning and
afternoon.

The Kindergarten program is offered as either
morning only (9:00-12:15) or full day (9:00-2:45).

Our Faculty Our summer faculty consists of our regular
academic and enrichment teachers along with
adjunct teachers who are recommended to us.
Summer Attire Casual and comfortable are best for summer.
Shoes or sandals (no flip flops) are a must.
Please be aware that some activities will require
tennis shoes, swim suits, safety helmets, etc. Refund Policy Refunds, less a 20% fee, will be made with one
week’s notice of cancellation. Cancellation notice
of less than one week will
incur a 50% fee. (Excluding
Cougar Tracks and Cub Tracks which are non-
refundable.)
Daily Routine Attendance is taken at the beginning of each
class period so students should arrive on time and
be prepared for the start of each class period.
The entrance gate will be locked during program
hours and unlocked at each dismissal/drop-off/
pickup period.
Extended Care Extended Care is available both in the morning
and afternoon. Sporadic daily extended care can
be arranged at a daily rate of $25 per child. All
extended care must be paid for in advance. Same-
day care must be paid for at drop-off.
Children not picked up by 6:00 pm will incur a late
fee at the rate of $1 / minute.

Facilities Our campus is located at the intersection of San
Antonio Avenue and 15th Street in Upland.
Although we are not affiliated, we share our site
with Upland Christian Church. The school backs
up to Magnolia Park, which we frequently use
during the summer session. Our well-maintained
grounds boast a variety of mature trees and are
safe and secure with locked, coded gates.

Rules Carden Arbor View School requires that students
who are not 8 years old or 4 feet 9 inches tall to
have a booster seat to travel off campus.
Students are required to be respectful towards
their teachers and peers at all times.
Drop Off and Pickup Please drop-off and pickup students at the front
of the school in the semi-circle. The front gate
will be unlocked and staffed during recess times
for those students who are leaving and arriving.
The gate will be locked during class time and
unlocked at lunch time, during which children will
be supervised. If the gate is locked, you may use
the front office to enter the grounds. If you plan
to walk your child onto campus, please park in a
designated stall and not in the loop.
