R e l a x a n d u n w i n d . A peaceful time in Suikyo Hita
A drop of water gradually accumulates to form Chikugo River and replenishes the soil of Kyushu. Hita, where water springs, is where people gathered to nurture a rich culture.
Virgin Chinese red ash forest of Mt. Gozendake
A city where time passes slowly in a rapidly changing world saturated with
information.
Hita, known as “Suikyo” – home of water, is located in the center of Kyushu and
was known as the “city in the mountains” in olden days.
It retains much of the relics of the culture of a city directly controlled by the Edo
shogunate such as architectural treasures that tell the tale of the link with Edo
and festivals that celebrate past glories.
e outstanding unspoilt nature is the result of the people’s tender loving care.
Once you visit, it makes you want to go back for more…
You are sure to nd something new about Hita every time.
Well? Who will you visit with next time?

Spring in Suikyo Hita
Spring in Hita starts with the “Hina Festival”. In the olden days, Hita was where the deputy of the western provinces of the Edo Shogunate had his administrative headquarters and Hita achieved the highest level of prosperity in Kyushu as the center of politics, economy and culture. Wealthy merchants such as money changers played a big role in the town’s economy and a unique town culture flourished. The historic streets that retain much of the old buildings are designated as conservation areas for groups of traditional buildings. In springtime, Hita is surrounded by colorful flowers.

Listen to the trickling water of the stream in an open-air bath. The cool air that blows through the river’s surface feels good on a yakatabune boat. Hot spring spas in Hita where you can feel the changes of the seasons are truly rich in character.
A luxurious time of soaking in an overflowing bath of hot spring water, which was loved and enjoyed by many lovers of poetry and calligraphy. Enjoy a relaxing time with loved ones.
Hita’s hot spring spas are popular for they are believed to give the blessings of childbearing and are also known to be beneficial to the skin. After soaking in the bath, savor the local specialty sweetfish in elegant fashion on a yakatabune boat.
Feasting on nabe hot pot on a yukimi boat with shoji screens and kotatsu tables in the winter is also stylish and pleasurable.
During this period, you can relax and
enjoy delicious cuisines and souvenirs
made with yuzu in traditional inns and
stores.

Where Mameda Town was directly controlled by the governor, the center of trade was Kuma Town. The town bustled with many people coming from afar to shop at various stores and kimono stores. Today, the town has hot spring spa inns along Mikuma River where tourists relax to sooth away the weariness of the journey.
Mameda retains much of its old sections from the Edo period and it is said that one can walk the streets using an old map from that period. In 2004, it was designated a conservation zone for significant traditional buildings of Japan as a valuable area that heavily retains the vestiges of a merchant town of the late modern period.

Unlimited energy that transcends time and space
Takatsuka Atago JizosonTanso Hirose A distinguished jizo temple, which is believed
to have been established by a monk named Gyoki almost 1,200 years ago. It has many followers as the jizo temple that grants all kinds of dreams and is visited by many as the place of worship during the exam season.
The passage to the temple is lined with many stalls selling seasonal produce and souvenirs such as fern shoots, bracken ferns, shiitake and chestnuts, and the fun banter with the stall holders is part of the attraction.
Born in Mameda Town, Tanso Hirose studied calligraphy and classic of Filial Piety from his father from an early age. After suffering a serious illness, he decides to become an academic and teacher and opens a tutorial school at the age of 24. 12 years later, he opens Kangi-en.
In an age when there were strict systems of class and rank, he taught all of his students
equally regardless of education, age or rank. He also gave them the chance to acquire social skills as well as academic skills by having them practice an orderly life and letting them run the tutorial school and dormitory. Kangi-en was operated by Tanso’s students after his death and until the school’s closure in 1897, almost 5,000 students had studied at the school.
Jizo statues that grant many dreams
In Hita, a unique culture flourished during the reign of Lord Ohkura in the middle ages and academic and town cultures flourished in the Edo period as represented by Kangi-en. The city is filled with historical romance that evokes the passionate lives of its predecessors such as Ohno Oimatsu Tenmansha Shrine, built by the legendary sumo wrestler Hita Don (Nagasue Ohkura), as well as Jigenzan Yokoji Temple, which houses the Buddhist statues made by a Unkei-Kaikei monk.
Kangi-en was Japan’s largest private tutorial school established in Hita by Confucianist Tanso Hirose in late Edo. For 80 years until its closure in 1897, it turned out great figures such as Dutch scholar Choei Takano and military scholar Masujiro Ohmura. The site today has the living quarters and study preserved and open to the public and effort is being made to register it a World Heritage as a “property of modern education”.
