SUMMER CAMP 2020
A D V E N T U R E S F O R G I R L S A N D FA M I L I E S
Camp Life is the
Best Life!
Dear Girls and Families,
I can still remember the first time
I went to camp. I was a 7-year-old
Brownie Girl Scout attending Camp
Kittamaqund. Little did I know the
gift my parents were giving me with
that opportunity. I found camp to be
a place where I was safe to explore
challenges and supported to try new
things. I found lifelong friends. Most
of all, camp unlocked a true love of
the outdoors. To this day, I get an excited butterfly
feeling at the start of every camp season.
Camp is a magical place for girls. First-time campers
build self-confidence, courage and character.
Repeat campers experience the magic of seeing old
friends, making new ones and creating memories
that will last a lifetime. Most importantly, camp is
designed to be unplugged, outside and FUN!
This is achieved through a strong partnership among campers, highly trained staff
and families. Your girl’s overall experience is our top priority. We are attentive to
our campers and monitor things such as sunscreen, hydration, sleep, cleanliness
and safety. This is done in a fun camp atmosphere with sunscreen dance parties,
hydration cheers before meals, siesta in the middle of the day and other lively ways
to achieve the desired outcome of a safe and nurturing environment. We have adult
staff members, many who return year after year to care for our girls.
But there are times when everything does not go as planned: The thunder rolls, the
marshmallow burns, or something unexpected forces us to adjust our plans. These
moments create memories that teach girls to work together to create a truly unique
camp experience.
It is an honor to partner with you in this experience, and I appreciate the trust you
have placed in us by sending your camper to spend a session (or more) with us at
Pamunkey Ridge Girl Scout Camp or Camp Kittamaqund. Our summer staff members
are a talented group of young people who understand this mission.
The staff and I look forward to seeing you on registration day. If you have questions,
please do not hesitate to contact me.
Amanda “Salamander” Porter
Outdoor Program Manager and ALL of the Pamunkey Ridge Girl Scout Camp/Camp Kittamaqund Staff!

Table of Contents Mission, Promise and LawThe Girl Scout mission is a powerful statement of what we strive to do each day. The Girl Scout Promise conveys how Girl Scout members agree to act every day toward one another and other people. The Girl Scout Law outlines how Girl Scouts act toward one another and the world.
Girl Scout Mission Statement Girl Scouting builds girls of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place.
Girl Scout Promise On my honor, I will try: To serve God and my country, To help people at all times, And to live by the Girl Scout Law.
Girl Scout Law I will do my best to be honest and fair, friendly and helpful, considerate and caring, courageous and strong, and responsible for what I say and do, and to respect myself and others, respect authority, use resources wisely, make the world a better place, and be a sister to every Girl Scout.

About Girl Scout Camp and RegistrationGirl Scout camp provides creative and educational outdoor experiences within a group-living setting for girls. Our camps use the Girl Scout program, trained leadership and the resources of the natural surroundings to contribute to each camper’s mental, physical, social and spiritual growth.
REGISTRATION The proof is in the research! Camp is awesome! Girls with more frequent outdoor experiences are more likely to seek challenges and are better at solving problems — qualities that help them academically, with social development and increased self-esteem.
Camp gives her cool new experiences! 72% of girls surveyed said that Girl Scouts gave them the chance to build new skills and/or try new outdoor activities.
Camp makes everything better! Research shows spending time in nature improves concentration and creative reasoning. Outdoor experiences also help promote healthy social development and increase self-esteem.

Frequently Asked QuestionsWhen and how can I register my camper?December 9, 2019 at 8 pm. It is fast and easy to do. A $50 non-refundable deposit per session will reserve your camper’s space. The balance is due two weeks before the start of the session. For your convenience, we offer three registration methods:1. Online: www.comgirlscouts.org/COMAR 2. Email: [email protected] 3. Mail: Fill out and mail in the registration form found in the back of this brochure to: Girl Scouts of the Commonwealth of Virginia 4900 Augusta Ave., Suite 200 Richmond, VA 23230
Is Financial Assistance available?Yes! We want every girl to experience camp! Financial Assistance is available to help families meet the cost of sending their girl to camp. See page 27 of this brochure for the form to apply.
Is my camper ready for camp?Making the choice to attend camp for the first time is an important decision for both camper and parent. There are some great ways to ease into the camp experience. You can try a shorter session or come to camp together at Family Camp. Visit camp during our Open House on May 9 from 2-3pm at Pamunkey Ridge and get a lay of the land, check out the facility and get your questions answered. Then, encourage your girl to be part of the planning process by looking through this booklet together and picking the camp session that fits your schedule and her interests. Invite her to take a helping role in preparing for camp. With your help, she can shop for supplies, pack her own bag and pre-address stationery to use at camp. See you this summer!
Am I ready for my camper to attend camp? Our camp staff has been helping girls work on being independent for a long time. While the schedule says at camp we teach dance or arts & crafts or canoeing, what we really teach is self-reliance and resilience – invaluable skills for every girl. Reassure yourself, as a parent, that you’ve done your job. All the advice, coaching, caring and goodwill you’ve given your child over the years is in there. Trust the job you have done. Who are the camp staff? Our staff members love to work with youth. We look for people who can work as a team, who want to help campers develop in both social and in skill areas, who are committed to keeping camp a kind community and who have Girl Scout experience. We demand that our staff be amazing and we help them develop the skills they need to get there. Our staff comes from all over the U.S. (and even from abroad) but they return to camp each summer and bring their own life experiences with them. This diversity creates a welcoming, accepting and kind community at camp that begins with our staff and radiates throughout all camp community members. Many of our staff
“grew up” in our camp program and return year after year to share their passion with our campers.
What if my camper has special needs? Our policy of inclusion means that we try to accommodate as many campers as possible and provide a successful experience for all girls. Please partner with our staff to help make the camp experience successful for your child. Communicate with Camp Director, Amanda Porter, [email protected], prior to registering your camper for camp about her needs. This enables our camp staff to make every effort to make reasonable accommodations. Campers should be self-sufficient and able to dress, eat and shower on their own.
Can my camper be placed with a specific friend/buddy at camp?We do everything we can to accommodate such requests. Campers may choose one mutual buddy. Please remember that one of our goals is for every camper to make new friends. We would never want a cabin group nearly full of girls from the same school and have one or two campers left out of that circle. Please note that girls need to register for the same session, be in the same grade, be on the same Girl Scout level, and list, mutually, each other as their buddy. How do we apply our credits earned from the Cookie Program? Our camp sessions fill quickly, so please register with your deposit to hold your spot at the time of registration. Your camper’s Pathway Pass will be issued to her in mid-April upon completion of the Cookie Program. Once credit is given for the earned/free session of camp, you will be issued a deposit refund if applicable.
ConfirmationsConfirmation of camp registration will be sent to your email address beginning in February. Confirmations will include required paperwork, health form, packing lists, directions to camp and more.
REFUND/CANCELLATIONSThe $50 deposit per session is non-refundable.• Cancellations made a minimum of three weeks (21 calendar
days) prior to camp will result in a refund minus the $50 deposit.
• No refund is provided for cancellations made three weeks or less (20 calendar days) prior to the first day of the camp session.
• If the camper is a no-show at the full camp session, no refund is provided unless GSCV has had notification of late arrival.
If a camper leaves early due to homesickness, unacceptable behavior or parental request, no refund will be made. All requests for refunds must be made in writing and emailed to [email protected].

NewThis Year! The crackle of the campfire, the splash of canoe paddles in the lake, the whoosh of an arrow flying towards the bullseye — these are the sounds of summer camp. It’s a special time that allows your girl to unplug from her electronics and connect to nature, peers and herself. She will build skills and confidence through new experiences under the guidance of caring, trained adults. Oh — and she’ll have a ton of fun too!
Girl Scout camp is an exclusively all girl experience that is girl-planned and girl-led. Planned camper activities support the theme of the week, and the other fun activities are completely up to the camper. From archery to canoeing to the arts, campers will get to choose what they want to do! Campers will participate in both themed activities and girl-chosen activities, allowing for progression and fun.
