Girl Scouts throughout the United States are celebrating the 100th anniversary of the organization they love this year.

Wilson County is no stranger to Girl Scouting. Currently in the county there are 700 active participants in various troops throughout Lebanon, Mt. Juliet and Watertown.

Regional Executive Cathey Sweeney said there are 200 girls in troops in Lebanon and 500 active girls in Mt. Juliet. Watertown is home to 59 scouts as well.

“I want people to know that the Girl Scouts have an office right here in Wilson County. We aren’t just a Nashville organization. There is a Girl Scout office at the Chamber of Commerce on the public square in Lebanon,” said Sweeney.

Sweeney also noted there are many adults who volunteer with scouting in various ways. “We have 83 adult volunteers in Lebanon, 27 in Watertown and 250 in Mt Juliet,” she said.

Although Girl Scouts had applied in the past for funds through United Way, Sweeney said the organization is no longer filling out on application for those funds.

“We don’t apply anymore, but we do get designations, if someone is donating to United Way and they designate they want

their donation to go to Girl Scouts, then we will get those.”

The largest troops in Wilson County come from Mt. Juliet and Lebanon. Teresa Wilson is the leader of a troop in Mt. Juliet that currently has 44 members and Tina Wilke’s Lebanon troop has 21 active girls.

“To start a troop, you only need five girls,” said Sweeney. “So if you have a daughter and she has four friends, they could start their own troop.”

Here in Wilson County, there are a couple of events taking place to honor the anniversary.

CedarStone Bank is hosting an adults only event Thursday, April 19 that is aimed at community members, donors and volunteers who may be interested in learning more about scouting.

On April 28, the James E. Ward Ag Center will play host to the girls with several activities scheduled throughout the day. The fun includes old fashioned crafts such as making corn husk dolls and a sewing class where girls can learn the basics of quilting and crocheting.

“Someone will be on hand to teach the girls sign language out of respect for our founder, Juliette Gordon Low, who was deaf,” Sweeney said.

Anyone who would like more information on scouting can contact the office on the square at 453-2473.

Dear Wilson County Girl Scouts and Leaders,

Congratulations to each of you as you participate in the celebration of “The Year of the Girl” which marks the 100’h anniversary of the founding of the Girl Scouts of the United States of America.

You are a part of a distinguished number of young girls and women across our nation and around the world who strive to build faith, courage, confidence, and character in yourselves and others through your local Girl Scout groups and activities, The countless contributions, which have been and continue to be made by our local Girl Scout members, leaders, and alumni, in our communities truly help to make Wilson County a better place for all of us.

I join with the citizens of Wilson County in applauding each of you for your leadership roles in our county and beyond.

A Letter from Wilson County Mayor

Randall Hutto
