The mostambitioustheatre inLiverpool...’TheGuardian

What a contrast! As the nights get lighter, economic gloom seems to be setting in. All of us have had to reassess our priorities and budgets accordingly. While some changes will be noticeable (the loss of Saturday Splatts and changed boxoffice opening hours), we are working hard to ensure that the impact of government cuts will not affect the excellent, award winning service and programme we deliver.

unity will still be the bright beacon for the new, the innovative, the controversial and the provocative. ‘Expect the unexpected’ will remain our proud mantra.

This season’s programme demonstrates the continuing strength of a host of diverse, city-wide festivals – so you can laugh your head off or sample part of the rich multicultural patchwork of our city. Our local communities and artists are represented over the next few months, who in defiance of it all, continue to write, perform, sing, and dance.

December 31st 1940.

Fifteen people huddle in an air raid shelter as the Luftwaffe mercilessly assault Liverpool. They pass the time telling stories of love, tragedy and loss, singing and making do with the odd bottle of stout and a pan of scouse.

Class differences, petty squabbles and black market deals raise tensions as they desperately let old acquaintances be forgot and prepare to welcome ina happier new year...

Combining humour and warmth, pathos and tragedy, songs and dancing. Red Skies is a salutary and timely reminder of the horrors of war, both then and now.

DramaLast Dance AtThe RialtoTue 12 – Sat 16 Jul | 8:00pm...........................................................A city in flames, a thousand police officers injured. What really happened on the streets of Liverpool 8 in July 1981?

The writer has a unique perspective; as a ‘sprog’ police officer he was on duty on Upper Parliament Street on the Sunday night and injured at The Rialto. After the worst civil disorder ever seen on the British mainland, one side would describe the rioters as “thieves and vagabonds” and the other “apathetic fools” for not rioting.

One thing was for certain; in the former ballroom where the Beatles once played there would be no more dancing.
