It’s now been a thrilling twelve months since we first publicly opened the doors to our new £15.2m home.

We’d like to invite friends old and new to join mac birmingham’s Senior Management Team and members of our Board to help us toast the last year, and our plans for the future. Hosted by mac birmingham’s Chief Executive and Artistic Director, Dorothy Wilson MBE, this is your chance to share your view with the people who steer this great organisation.

If you are at all intrigued about the running of one of the country’s busiest arts centres do pop along. You can talk to us about our programme, our spaces, our commercial activities, our take on the recent funding cuts... nothing is out of bounds.

A selection of 12 performers from the many different BE FESTIVAL shows will make mac birmingham their creative hub for a week following the festival, developing ideas for two brand new performances. At the end of the week they will show their ideas, and the audience decides which piece is developed into a full show for BE 2012. So don’t miss this chance to be part of the process.

The work-in-progress performances will be followed by an ‘impro night’ for physical performers: Mimprovisation.

The Election Project gives audiences the chance to view exclusive photographs taken during the 2010 General Election campaign. The photographs include iconic moments such as Gordon Brown’s infamous meeting with Gillian Duffy, forming a unique social document, which explores the intricacies and eccentricities of Britain’s geographical and political landscape.

mac birmingham is grateful to the Speaker’s Advisory Committee on Works of Art at the House of Commons for agreeing to loan these works for the duration of this exhibition.

In August 2008, photographer Simon Roberts set off on a year long journey around England in a motorhome. As he travelled the length and breadth of the country he captured images of the English at leisure in the landscape: scantily clad men and women sunbathe in an leafy park in a rare moment of clement weather, golfers play against a backdrop of power stations, kids race BMXs on a track overlooking the urban sprawl of Bradford.

A National Media Museum touring exhibition

This exhibition has been organised in partnership with the National Media Museum, Bradford, www.nationalmediamuseum.org.uk.

The National Media Museum is devoted to film, photography, TV, radio and the web and includes unrivalled national collections of Photography, Photographic Technology, Cinematography and Television. Based in Bradford, West Yorkshire, it is one of the most visited Museums outside London.

Avon Calling is a new theatre event made for your living room. Invite some friends around and wait for the Avon Lady to ring on your front door and create an Avon party with a twist right in your home.

Have fun with vintage Avon products and adverts, test and maybe even purchase new Avon cosmetics and toiletries. Hear the Avon lady’s own story, and share your own memories of Avon.

Avon Calling is performed in audience members’ own houses - for up to10 audience members at a time. Tickets must be booked per household by the householder.

Britain is booming and Molly moves to London from deepest Cornwall full of naive dreams and high hopes, and on a quest to make her life like the movies. Then on 7/7/05, she finds herself on an underground train blown up by terrorists and her life is forced to take a different direction. Funny, frank and poetic, this is the true story of what happened next and how we put things back together after they’ve been blown apart.

Greg McLaren has been singing, to everyone, everywhere. Where he would speak he must sing. He’s recorded his encounters and mashed them up to create a slippery world between what is meant and what is expressed, what is created and what is found. It’s a fantastically odd and moving journey from place to place, voice to voice that slips between reality and imagination, and light social self-harm. It’s a peculiarly playful and dangerous one man opera performed with utterly offhand conviction.

(Don’t worry, neither Doris nor any effigy or representation of her comes to harm during the show.)

Part detective noir, part lecture, part personal biography, Francesca investigates the message on a postcard sent 100 years ago and finds herself obsessed by the life of Miss Gibbs. What happens when Francesca starts tracing a history that isn’t her own? And why did Miss Gibbs have to be careful tomorrow?

Artists Leon Sparkes & Deborah Brogden occupy mac birmingham’s shed for a week-long mini residency. They will be inviting people to enter the imaginary, digital world they have created. The project will begin as an empty space (mac’s shed) and grow into an interactive installation, entwining themes of digital media, narratives, games and future living. Leon and Deborah will work with painting, illustration, textiles, digital media and music throughout the week. The audience will be invited to view the work at any stage of the process, engaging in discussions with the artists.

There will also be an opportunity to engage in an illustration workshop with the artist, and the work will be displayed as part of the finished creation.

Our Refugee Week Celebration Day will see mac birmingham erupt with sound, colour and life. Tony Levin made a tremendous contribution to jazz in UK and Europe throughout his long career and in this concert many of his colleagues will celebrate his music.

There will be a free jazz set with Mujician players Paul Dunmall, Keith Tippett, Paul Rogers and Tony’s son Miles on drums, and a ‘straight’ jazz set with Alan Skidmore, Jean Toussaint, Ray Warleigh, Arnie Somogyi, Clark Tracey and others.

Goodnight Lenin are one of Birmingham’s most exciting young bands, and we are thrilled to include them as part of our 2011 Arena Music series, for a special gig to launch their eagerly anticipated EP.

They first caught the attention of audiences in Birmingham after releasing a YouTube video of a simple acoustic performance in which they sat perched on the counter tops of their kitchen.

Goodnight Lenin’s songs are reminiscent of the singer-songwriters of the 1960s and 1970s, whilst still being relevant to the modern day. The five piece alt folk nu Country band are rapidly developing into something truly special, inspired by Dylan, Young and Simon & Garfunkel.

Marc and Ann Savoy and their two sons Joel and Wilson are the first family of Cajun music, whose fans include Linda Ronstadt and T Bone Burnett.

The Savoy Family Band plays honed down, authentic Cajun music laced with an earthy sensuality. In their hands, the old tunes have been revived and returned to new life.

The band brings the raw energy of the dancehalls of southwest Louisiana to the Arena stage, peppered with humorous and informative anecdotes about life in the Cajun heartland.

Guitarist and writer Justin Adams joins forces with Gambian griot and master musician, Juldeh Camara, for an exhilarating performance that combines blues rock with West Africa’s elemental, ancient string groove.

In this performance expect to hear the low growl of the guitar played by Justin, who has notably written and performed with Robert Plant, mixed with the enchanting screams of Juldeh’s fiddle.

Possibly the world’s first accidental big band, The Burns Unit formed out of a one-week songwriting retreat - called “Burnsong” - held in rural Scotland in December 2006.

Now the eight-piece Scottish-Canadian “supergroup” grace our Arena stage performing songs from their critically acclaimed album, Side Show. The group have been described as “indie pop meets carnival rock” and include award-winning folk singer Karine Polwart and alt-folk royalty King Creosote.

We are The Minotaur

Interested in experimental performance? Kindle are looking for 20 performers and 10 musicians aged 16+ to participate in this ambitious outdoor theatrical event.

Participants will be given the opportunity to challenge themselves physically and vocally and learn new skills in ensemble acting. Musicians will have the opportunity to create and develop their own compositions with the support of Kindle’s musical arranger.

Unleash your inner Bboy or Bgirl in a week of high energy dance workshops with acclaimed teacher and choreographer Mickael ‘Marso’ Riviere of Bboy’s Attic.

If you have some dance experience and want to learn about the culture of Breakin’/Bboyin’ join us for this week. You’ll master the fundamentals including spins, footwork, and classic freezes... by the end of the week you could be attempting a headspin.

Working in our dance studio, with the opportunity to show off your moves around mac birmingham’s public spaces over the week, you’ll also be part of a Bboy video being filmed over the week.

Breakin’ OutAlongside our Summer School with impromptu Bboy/bgirl demos throughout the building, comes a week of one-off events and workshops at mac birmingham, including film screenings, Urban Screen Printing, Learn to MC, Beginners Breakin’ and Hip Hop DJ Skills. Our Tuesday Tunes session will be taken over by the sounds of 90’s Hip Hop and accompanied by live graffiti.

The performance, inspired by the visual intensity of graphic novels and computer games, will be a bold and bloody reinvention of the myth of the Minotaur, exploring carnival, labyrinths, sacrifice and celebration. It promises to be a truly spectacular total theatre experience in our equally spectacular Arena theatre.

This Christmas get ready for the spectacular return of The Lost Happy Endings. After last year’s successful run we are delighted to be working with Red Earth again on this unique take on a modern children’s classic.

Jub’s important job is to collect and send out the Happy Endings from all the stories in the world in time for everybody’s bedtime. But one night she is caught by a wicked witch who steals all of the happy endings...What if the shoe didn’t fit Cinderella? What if the Prince’s kiss didn’t awaken Snow White? What if the Big Bad Wolf gobbled up Little Red Riding Hood?

With help from her friends, Jub must dream up a perfect plan to outwit the Witch and to make sure, like all good fairy tales, this one has a happy ending.

After three long years of fundraising, we’ve nearly completed our task to raise £15m and reopen an arts centre fit for the 21st century. But we still need your help to find the final £10,000 to complete the appeal.

mac birmingham is situated only a few minutes from the City Centre, located in Cannon Hill Park, opposite the County Cricket Ground on Edgbaston Road, off Pershore Road (A441) and Bristol Road (A38).

mac birmingham is easily accessible using all the major city road routes and is served by a number of buses from Birmingham City Centre including 1,35,45,47,62 and 63.

You can find us by walking through Edgbaston Mill or driving along Queen’s Ride, where there is a large, free car park and bicycle stands at the front and rear of the building.

Group bookings Book 10 tickets and get an 11th ticket free. This offer does not apply to events featured as part of any external hires. Please note groups of 10+, schools, wheelchair spaces cannot be booked online. Please call 0121 446 3232 to book.

Refunds and Exchanges Tickets cannot be exchanged under any circumstances and refunds will only be given in very exceptional conditions at the management’s discretion.

Concessions Prices shown in brackets are available to the following groups on production of valid ID:

• Holders of current Passport to Leisure Cards

• Job Seekers Allowance

Our staff are required to check ID for every concession price ticket sold, so please bring proof of your status every time you visit.

How to book

mac has ramped access into the building from both entrances. Disabled parking spaces are available in the free car park (owned by Birmingham City Council) next to the bridge.

There is level or ramped access throughout the building and wheelchair accessible lifts to all levels. Accessible toilets are located on every level and a toilet with hoist and shower is also available. If you require this facility please contact Sales and Information.

The Theatre and Hexagon are fitted with infra–red systems. The Cinema, meeting rooms, education studios and public areas are fitted with an induction loop.

Information can be made available in different formats, including large print, Braille or audio tape, for those with visual impairments.

Assistant dogs are welcome and we are very happy to provide bowls of water.
