Sullivan County BOCES Office of Instructional Programs Donna Flynn-Brown, Assistant Superintendent of Instructional Programs Malinda Kristiansen, Administrative Assistant November 2018 Board Report Program Updates: We had a lot of exciting events planned at WSS for the month of October. The month started with a Professional Development Day where the majority of our staff listened to a presentation from the Carbone Clinic consultant, Gina Tirri called Proactive Strategies and Protocols to Reduce Problem Behavior in the Classroom. Staff feedback was very positive about the topic, and the presenter for this day. One of our staff members who is also a volunteer firefighter, Megan Hendershot, conducted a Safety Fire Prevention Program for our students. She discussed with students what they should do in case of a fire. Our PBIS team sponsored many events this month starting with the WSS Pumpkin Patch where students went out with their classrooms, picked a pumpkin and had a donut and apple cider. They purchased this treat by using the Becker Bucks that they had earned. We kicked off the week of October 29th with Spirit Week. Students and staff showed their spirit each day by dressing accordingly. On October 31st students dressed in costumes and went from class to class to gather candy. The event ended with a parade and dance party for the students in the cafeteria. On October 26th students who had done an exceptional job in their classroom came to Principal’s table. Their pictures were taken and displayed in the hallway for everyone to see how well they did. Our Book Fair begins this week and we hope that we raise enough money to once again buy each student a book. Special Education White Sulphur Springs Megan Becker, Executive Principal

We had a lot of exciting events planned at WSS for the month of October. The month started with a Professional Development Day where the

majority of our staff listened to a presentation from the Carbone Clinic consultant, Gina Tirri called Proactive Strategies and Protocols to Reduce

Problem Behavior in the Classroom. Staff feedback was very positive about the topic, and the presenter for this day. One of our staff members who

is also a volunteer firefighter, Megan Hendershot, conducted a Safety Fire Prevention Program for our students. She discussed with students what

they should do in case of a fire. Our PBIS team sponsored many events this month starting with the WSS Pumpkin Patch where students went out

with their classrooms, picked a pumpkin and had a donut and apple cider. They purchased this treat by using the Becker Bucks that they had earned.

We kicked off the week of October 29th with Spirit Week. Students and staff showed their spirit each day by dressing accordingly. On October 31st

students dressed in costumes and went from class to class to gather candy. The event ended with a parade and dance party for the students in the

cafeteria. On October 26th students who had done an exceptional job in their classroom came to Principal’s table. Their pictures were taken and

displayed in the hallway for everyone to see how well they did. Our Book Fair begins this week and we hope that we raise enough money to once

again buy each student a book.

PBIS

We are excited to see our PBIS team grow this year as we have many staff who have eagerly volunteered to be on this team. The

PBIS teams focus is to continue to grow our positive school culture, and highlight positive choices and behaviors. Ms. Colleen

Lynch, Assistant Principal, is overseeing this work and the first meeting will be held this month. During the meeting there will be

discussion about ways of implementing PBIS-driven staff acknowledgement in order to boost morale and increase program support.

We had a very successful PBIS door decorating contest for Halloween, and the team looks forward to improving participation and

camaraderie.

Holiday Festivities

Our elementary students were able to celebrate the season of costumes and candy as they went on a trick or treat journey. Several teachers and older

students provided treats to the younger students. The activity created an opportunity for positive student and staff interactions, community building,

and fun!

Instructional Efforts

The administrative team is developing an instructional focus and supporting staff as we increase the expectations of our students and the rigor of our

instruction. We want to provide evidence that we are a learning institution that helps our students excel academically, as well as socially. To that end,

we are continuing to monitor the progress of our literacy support programming, through curriculum supports such as Read 180 and System 44.

Elementary teachers and students continue to work with our science dimensions curriculum, to further enhance instruction and learning.

October’s Students of the Month

For October we had 20 students chosen from their programs as Students of The Month. They will be honored at a pizza lunch with teachers and

administrators. Congratulations to both students and teachers! The breakdown of these students by district is as follows:

Liberty- 3

Livingston Manor- 2

Roscoe- 1

Fallsburg- 3

Monticello- 4

Program Updates:

The recruitment team has started presenting to 10th graders in districts. The format and video have been updated and the presentation is well

received. The University of Northwestern Ohio recently presented to our Auto Tech and Auto Body classes. The Culinary Institute of America did

demonstrations for the Culinary 1 and 2 classes. The ribbon cuttings for SUNY Sullivan and Catskill Regional Medical Center were a huge success.

Earlier this month, Culinary students visited Wild Roots Farm outside of Livingston Manor. Not only do Wes & Amy Gillingham grow an organic

garden of veggies, they also raise sheep, highland cattle, ducks & chickens. They live off the grid. Amy showed students how to forage & discussed

medicinal qualities of certain wild greens. After meeting the ambassador (a Great Pyrenees) and the other animals, Amy talked about the circle of

sustainability at the farm & described how they built their house using interlocking logs and no nails. The home is centered around a wood fired brick

oven. The highlight of the trip was making individual pizzas & then baking them in the outdoor bake oven. The students had a wonderful time and

learned valuable information simultaneously.

The Early Childhood Education (ECE) Program attended internship locations on Halloween this year. Mornng students attended EasterSeals Project

Excel and the afternoon students attended Liberty Elementary School. Both sessions helped their classes get ready for the Halloween parades and

supervised the class during the parade. The ECE students had an opportunity to get into the holiday spirit and dress up. It was an enjoyable

experience for the student helpers and an extra set of helpful hands and eyes for the Mentor Teachers. Pictured below; Shannon Fields (Graduate of

the ECE Program – now a TA at Project Excel), John Madera (Junior RCS) and Mr. Norm (Project Excel Mentor Teacher).

Case Manager, Christine Cimmino, shared photos from an October 24 visit to the SJSEC by Klu Padu, an admissions counselor for SUNY

Sullivan. Our HSE diploma aspirants took this excellent opportunity to consider their higher education possibilities. Mr. Padu discussed the

application process, financial aid, and the majors that the college offers.

Adult Teacher & OSHA Trainer, Doug Lee, attended the October 25 & 26, 2018 NYSED/CUNY Teacher Leader Institute in Albany. Doug reports

that this Institute provides Adult Teacher Leaders with Common Core aligned training for teaching adult students. This training is designed to be

brought to the adult teaching staff from the individual programs represented. About 80 adult teachers from across New York attended, with focused

workshops on Math and ELA. The new 2018 NYSED assessment, TABE 11 & 12, was introduced. Doug is now able to utilize the information he

received to present training to SCBOCES Adult Program staff as well as to adult teachers from within the Hudson Valley RAEN (Regional Adult

Education Network).

Doug further shares an informative and inspirational video recorded at a 2016 forum in which our instructors were among the presenters and

participants: https://youtu.be/S-jPsn7v_Lw?list=PLM0Ajq8FKzylBcTXYcLcnK1U71vs_6L7j

Student Success: Two Condensed Curriculum International, Inc. (CCI) Health Occ completers have recently earned National Healthcareer Association (NHA)
