STAFF MATTERS Update for Catskill Regional Medical Center employees, physicians and volunteers In the past year, our country has prepared for major changes brought on by the Affordable Care Act (ACA). The new health care mandates and employer changes have affected many and the ACA is a very costly part of legislation. Hospitals are now financially responsible for much of the costs affiliated with delivering healthcare. At Catskill Regional, we have felt the effect of the Medicare program; however we still managed to meet our overall financial targets. In keeping with the theme of perseverance, I’d like to share our recent accomplishments and vision for the coming year. The year 2013 was a year of improvement for our quality outcomes, and patient satisfaction and employee engagement. We also had a successful Joint Commission survey, received more than $3 million in funding and received national awards in quality of care from Healthgrades ® . Additionally, we completed the renovation of our Behavioral Health Unit which now includes 18 beds. We opened our Wound Healing Center, implemented our Electronic Health Records system and now provide Teleburn services through our affiliation with Lehigh Valley Regional Burn Center. We submitted our application to the New York State Department of Health to become a designated Stroke Center and began to hold joint Tumor Board conferences with Orange Regional. These conferences allow for oncologists, in all specialties, to provide consultation and oversight in the treatment of cancer patients at both facilities. This past year, we also expanded our primary care practice to our Harris Campus and welcomed third and fourth year medical students from Touro College to conduct their medical rotations at our Hospital. At the Grover M. Hermann Hospital, we added a new entrance sign, new digital mammography unit and bone densitometry scanner. We completed renovations on our Physical Therapy Department and gave the Family Health Center, on the ground floor, a facelift. Our strategic goals for 2014 include a continued focus on modernization. We will remodel the first floor and all acute care units of the hospital except Obstetrics; add a new main entrance as well as new outpatient entrances; a new generator will replace the existing original unit and we will repave our parking lots. We will also update our furniture, some equipment and add healing artwork. We will continue to work on patient bed configuration to increase the number of private patient rooms and will continue with renovations and cosmetic upgrades as appropriate. The 36th Annual WSUL/WVOS Heart-A-Thon took place at Catskill Regional Medical Center on Saturday, February 22. Both radio stations broadcasted live from the Hospital’s cafeteria from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The annual event raised more than $58,000 and the donations continue to come in with 100% of the proceeds benefiting the Cardio Pulmonary Department.

Members of the community stopped in throughout the day to make donations, listen to guest speakers and receive information and tips about Heart Health. Nursing students from Sullivan County BOCES provided free blood pressure screenings. Radio listeners also showed their support by calling in their pledge. In addition, thousands of tribute hearts were sold in honor or in memory of loved ones who have been afflicted with cardiac related conditions. Throughout the years, WSUL/WVOS has donated over $450,000 to Catskill Regional in support of its Cardio Pulmonary Department. We are grateful for their continued support!

Delivering Exceptional Care

Dear Dr. Galarneau,

I am writing to you because of the excellent experience I had at your hospital.

On February 11, 2014 I had total hip replacement surgery. Dr. Episalla performed the surgery.

First let me give you a little background. I am 71 years old and have never been in a hospital. To put it mildly, I was scared to death.

We arrived early in the morning and the nurses immediately took me in. As I said, I was scared. From the first nurse who told me to undress and put on a gown to the nurses in the operating room… All treated me just great. They were all very friendly, caring and comforting.

I then spent four days in room 200. All the nurses and nurses aides for that section were just excellent. If I rang the bell, immediately they asked what the problem was and I would have assistance in a moment or two. They were all friendly and very helpful. Even the cafeteria lady was nice. Who ever heard of having a choice for meals in a hospital? Plus, the food was very good.

Another good employee you have is Kristine Conologue in Physical Therapy. She had me up and walking the next day and was so nice to work with. She was most helpful to me.

I will recommend your hospital to all my friends. I have already told everyone about my experience in the hospital and my comments were all good.

You have some great employees and they all know how to make a patient feel comfortable.

Keep up the good work.

Sincerely, John Gempler

Below is a letter from a patient who shared his gratitude for the care and treatment he received at Catskill Regional.

Weight Watchers At Work

The Walk a Mile in Her Shoes® event to raise funds for RISE is being held April 26 at the Sullivan County Government Center, in Monticello. Registration begins at 9:00 a.m. Walk starts at 10:00 a.m. Men, women and children — many of them wearing red shoes — participate in this fun-filled annual event, which takes a light-hearted approach to a very serious subject and increases awareness of how sexual assault impacts individuals and families in Sullivan County. The event will coincide with Sexual Abuse Awareness Month.

We encourage the hospital employees and volunteers to participate in this unique and exciting event. Departments can walk together, as well as raise funds together; it is a great opportunity for team-building while also supporting one of Catskill Regional’s services.

For more information about RISE or the Walk a Mile in Her Shoes® event, contact Sarah Dittmar at 794-3300 ext. 2442.
