Introduction
On the 30th of June 2016, the final conference of the EU project Starting with Apprenticeship
(StartApp) took place in the Berlin Haus der Wirtschaft. 70 regional, national and international
participants received information on the project products as well as new trends in the fields
of apprenticeship and recruitment of apprentices. Amongst the speakers were the project
team, representative of politics and business as well as young apprentices.

rath, an Executive Assistant and trainer for
ibis budget, ibis and Suite Novotel Berlin
City, illustrated the opportunities that in-
company training can open up for your
company. She also shared her company's in-
ternal apprenticeship recruitment campaign.

Norbert Schöbel, European Commission, European Alliance for Apprenticeships
Norbert Schöbel, Team Leader in the Euro-
pean Commission - GD Employment, Social
Affairs, and Inclusion, in Brussels, called for
more work-based learning and strengthening
the in-company training system in Europe.
He did this through a presentation of the ac-
tivities of the European Commission; in par-
ticular, the European Alliance for Apprentice-
ships.

Apprenticeship – a means of fighting youth unemployment? The example of Greece

Panagiotis Koutoudis, a European Initia-
tives Consultant and Project Manager at
the Institute of Entrepreneurship Devel-
opment in Larissa, Greece, described the
contribution in-company training can
make to the fight against youth unem-
ployment. In this context, he discussed
both the results of academic studies and
the experiences of Greece.

Overcoming barriers to apprenticeship: The example of Austria
Roland Löffler, Austrian Institute of Research on Vocational Training
Roland Löffler, Project Lead at the Aus-
trian Institute of Research on Vocational
Training, Vienna, looked at barriers to
company training in Austria. He high-
lighted the special role that inadequate
apprentice recruitment strategies play in
this regard and underscored the need to
apply contemporary recruitment meth-
ods.

The StartApp approach to apprentice recruitment: An innovative model for Europe
Dr. Anja Lietzmann, k.o.s GmbH
Dr. Anja Lietzmann described contemporary
requirements for the acquisition and reten-
tion of apprentices and based on those re-
quirements, derives the StartApp model for
apprentice recruitment. This complex model
comprises five recruitment phases, seven
fundamentals, 20 golden rules, and 46 in-
struments.

Good practice - apprentice recruitment instruments I: Training ambassadors

Anne Hildebrandt, Project Manager at ABB
Training Center Berlin, introduced a girlsatec
training ambassador. She explained how they
recruit girls and young women to technical-
industrial apprenticeships on behalf of their
training companies, and she offered impres-
sions of their day-to-day training.

Good practice - apprentice recruitment instruments II: Mentoring program for girls
Christina Zweigle, Connext Communication GmbH
Christina Zweigle, HR Manager of Connext
Communication GmbH, Paderborn, re-
ported on a mentoring program that pre-
sents a range of opportunities to school-
girls over the course of a year. The pro-
gram offers support to girls interested in
technology by helping them develop their
talents and their future careers in the IT in-
dustry.

Rafał Sebastian Bałdys, Polish Association of Construction Industry Employers
Rafał Sebastian Bałdys, Vice President of the

Employers, Warsaw, illustrated current chal-
lenges in the Polish construction industry
and explained the contribution of contem-
porary apprentice recruitment tools in ad-
dressing these challenges.

Concluding session: Moving apprentice recruitment forward
Dr. Anja Lietzmann, k.o.s GmbH
Dr. Anja Lietzmann described issues critical to attracting the next generations of apprentices.
With the four guiding principles of contemporary apprentice recruitment as a jumping-off
point, Dr. Lietzmann used examples to illustrate three key areas of action that are critical for
companies struggling to secure their share of the "scarce resources" apprentices represent.

Participants were invited to learn more about the apprenticeship-relevant projects and activ-
ities of k.o.s GmbH and its partner organizations. There were also opportunities for discussion
and networking.

The project Starting with Apprenticeship is a two-year Strategic Partnership for Vocational
Education and Training, to be completed in 2016. It is funded by the EU programme ERAS-
MUS+ and implemented at the initiative of the EU Commission and the National Agency of
the Federal Institute for Vocational Training.
