according to the Academic Rankings of World Universities (ARWU).

UKZN is ranked in the top 3% of the world’s universities. The University has a worldwide reputation for academic excellence in

teaching and research, and degrees offered have international standing. The University has formal links, exchange programmes

and collaborative teaching and research programmes with many other universities around the globe.

A CHOICE OF FIVE CAMPUSES

UKZN has five campuses. The degree programme you choose determines where you study. Most campuses are close to a number of shopping centres, entertainment and recreational areas.

The Edgewood Campus is in Pinetown. It is the University’s primary site for teacher education. With easy access to the N3

highway and approximately 20 minutes’ drive from Durban, the campus offers sophisticated and attractive facilities.

The Howard College Campus is situated in Glenwood in Durban, with spectacular views of the Durban harbour. The Howard

College campus offers degree options in the fields of Engineering, Law, Humanities (including Music) and Social Sciences

(including Social Work), Nursing and Architecture.

The Nelson R Mandela School of Medicine in Umbilo, Durban, offers hands-on, problem-based, practical and relevant training

to those interested in pursuing the MBChB programme.

The Pietermaritzburg Campus is in Scottsville and offers a relaxed atmosphere with a great vibe. Pietermaritzburg is located

in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands, close to numerous nature reserves and parks. It is one hour’s drive from Durban. Unique to the

Pietermaritzburg campus are the disciplines of Agriculture, Theology and Visual Arts.

The Westville Campus is in the surburb of Westville, about eight kilometres from the CBD of Durban and Pinetown. The

Westville campus offers programmes in Science, Management Studies and Health Sciences.

HOW ARE STUDENTS SELECTEDIt is important to note that all qualifications have a limited number of spaces available. The most qualified applicants are chosen first and selection continues until all places have been filled. It is unlikely that applicants below the minimum score published will be selected. UKZN is serious about academic excellence – demand exceeds places available, and not all applicants meeting minimum requirements will be offered places.

ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS

• A National Senior Certificate for degree studies (NSC-DEG) pass;

• A minimum of seven subjects with at least four subjects (passed at Level 4) from the designated list;

• English Home Language/First Additional Language (passed at Level 3 minimum);

• Life Orientation (passed at Level 4 minimum); and

• Degree specific subjects and specific pass marks required in those subjects plus a minimum Academic Performance Score (APS). The calculation of points are shown on the next page.

other scores, excluding LO. UKZN will recognise academic excellence by awarding eight points to a

subject with a performance Level of 90-100%.

ACCOMMODATIONThere are on-campus and off-campus residences but accommodation is limited. Allocation of rooms is based on need, academic potential, ability to pay and distance from home.

Unfortunately, it is not possible to allocate rooms to all applicants and you may therefore have to find yourself accommodation

off-campus.

APPLICATIONS FOR RESIDENCES Local first-year applicants must apply for admission to University residence on the Central Applications Office (CAO form). No

separate application is required. Successful applicants are placed where accommodation is available.

If accommodation is awarded, you will be required to pay a residence deposit of R2 750 before a room will be allocated. This amount

is required in addition to the R3 750 to be paid before registration.

RESIDENCE ACCOMMODATION FEES Annual residence fees for first-time students are set at approximately R26 073 per year for a standard room and R28 518 for a

large room. Please note that these are the approximate fees for 2017 and are subject to change in 2018.
