    Vocabulary

    actions- something someone does

    afraid – frightened or scared

    depends – to trust or rely on

    nervously – worried or unsure

    peered – to stare or look at

    perfectly – having no mistakes

    rescue – to save or set free

    secret – hidden from most people, not known by everyone

    Grammar Skill - Sentences

  • A sentence is a group of words that tells a complete idea. The words

    are in an order that makes sense. A sentence begins with a capital

    letter. Sentences must have an ending mark. A statement is a sentence

    that tells something. It ends with a period. A question is a sentence

    that asks something. It ends with a question mark.

    aside – moved to one side

    culture – sharing the same way of life

    fair – treating everyone the same

    Grammar Skill – commands and exclamations

    A command is a sentence that tells someone to do something. It ends

    with a period (.). An exclamation is a sentence that shows surprise or

    strong feelings. It ends with an exclamation mark (!)

    Grammar Skill – expanding and combining sentences

    When you expand a sentence, you add more details to the subject or

    predicate. You can also combine sentences that have the same subject

    Grammar Skill – verb “have”

    A verb is a word that shows action. It tells what a person, animal, or

    thing does. The verb “have” has two forms in the present tense, “has”

    and “have”. “Has” is used when the subject is singular. “Have” is used

    Grammar Skill – Combining and rearranging sentences

    Two simple sentences with similar ideas can be combined into one

    longer sentence. This can be done by connecting the two sentences

    with a comma and a word such as and, but, or, and so.

    Grammar Skill – linking verbs

    A linking verb connects the subject to the rest of the sentence. It

    does not show action. The linking verb be has special forms in the

    present tense: is, are, and am.

    When the subject of the sentence is I, use the verb form am.

    When the subject of the sentence is singular, use the verb form is.

    When the subject of the sentence is plural, use the verb form are.
