2017 Activities Club Meeting and Game Night January 20, 2017 (11 attendees) A meeting was held at the beginning of the spring semester to discuss major upcoming outreach, professional development, and social events (TechFest, Students Presenting Optics Research Training Symposium (SPORTS)) to be held during the semester. Afterwards, members stayed for the beginning of semester game social where pizza, cookies and punch were provided.

Student Presenting Optics Research Training Symposium (SPORTS) Overview: It is without a doubt that presentation and debate skills for scientists are just as important as the fascinating science. Recently, our members requested an opportunity to prepare for conference oral presentations and the MS and PhD defenses, so we created SPORTS! SPORTS is a student run symposium held bi-weekly for members to practice and master oral presentation skills with a chance to win up to $100. This year we had 12 students present on various optics and photonics research areas. Each member received peer feedback and a score based on organization, content, and presentation to determine 1st ($100) and 2nd ($50) place prize winners. Pizza and wings were served for lunch at each event to increase student participation. Each session served as both a recruiting professional development event. (Average attendees = ~25) January 26, 2017 First of six student run symposia in optics research. An overview of SPORTS and its motivation was given to the student members. Two students presented in this session on ultrafast optics industry research methods and digital sparse aperture synthesis.

April 07, 2017 Talk Title: (1) High resolution complex field sensing in strong scintillation condition for atmospheric and adaptive optics applications. Outreach: TechFest 2017 February 18-19, 2017 Each year, Sinclair Community College sponsors a weekend outreach event that allows schools and businesses in the Dayton area to demonstrate the use of science and technology within their fields of expertise. The event is geared mostly towards elementary and middle school students and their families. The University of Dayton’s Electro-Optics Department and SPIE/OSA Joint Student Chapter annually hosts an exhibit table at this event. We demonstrated some uses of light in technology, including examples of polarizers and diffraction gratings as well as a display related to fiber optics. The laser game, Khet 2.0, as well as some lens and laser toolboxes were also used to provide hands-on opportunities for children to discover how to direct light with mirrors and lenses. There were approximately 75 exhibits, 36 speakers, and 2,400 registered students (NOT including their parents) at the 2017 TechFest.

Officer Meeting February 21, 2017 Officers and advisors from the OSA/SPIE and SPS chapters met to discuss SPORTS, Pi Day social, outreach activities for the year and scheduling talks from members of the physics department. Visiting Lecturer: Roberto Morandotti, Ph.D. April 14, 2017 (~40 Attendees) Dr. Morandotti visited the campus to give a talk entitled, “Multi photon entangled states based on integrated frequency combs”. The visiting lecturer brought out a large crowd of scientists where he detailed his collaboration with University of Dayton researchers and described work at the Institut national de la recherché scientifique (INRS). members then gave tours of their labs and a select number of members went to dinner and a night out on the town with Roberto.

Officer Meeting May 10, 2017 Discussed travel grants for upcoming Optics and Photonics conference and the Frontiers in Optics Conference. Social: New Academic Year Kickoff August 25, 2017 (~65 attendees) Held our annual kickoff event with the Department of Electro-Optics and Photonics. The event consisted of introductions of students, staff and faculty. We gave a short presentation on the UD Optics Association and provided pizza and drinks. Officer Meeting September 6, 2017 Discussed possible community outreach with local high school, logo design and Fall Picnic, and Fall election dates. Developed plan for professional development workshops including courses in public speaking, conference presentation, Blender and Python for Spring 2018. Social: Happy Hour December 1, 2017 (~20 Attendees) We held a beginning of the semester happy hour event at a local Mexican bar as a recruiting event and opportunity to meet new students in the Department.

Officer Meeting October 18, 2017 Discussed upcoming officer elections, the upcoming Fall hike social, amongst other new professional development endeavors. Club Meeting: Elections October 20, 2017 This meeting was scheduled to elect new officers, amend the chapter constitution, and encourage more students to participate in the student chapter and join SPIE and OSA. Cookies and punch were provided to boost attendance. Joshua Burrow retained his position as president. The new officers elected this year included Yining Liu as treasurer, John Hennen as vice-president, and Ankita Khanolkar as secretary. Social: Fall Hike October 21, 2017 (8 Attendees) The seven-mile hike was held in Twin Creek Metropark under the guidance of Prof. Joseph Haus. Chapter members took care of transportation which resulted into a good turnout for a weekend hike. Some chapter members had lunch together followed by this arduous hike.

Officer Meeting November 08, 2017 Worked on IONS 2018 application, discussed results of meeting with other engineering student organizations and upcoming social events. Social: Happy Hour December 1, 2017 (17 Attendees) We held a game night themed happy hour event at a local bar to provide an atmosphere for our members to unwind before the heated stresses of final exams. We provided drinks and appetizers to the attendees. Officers came up with the idea of creating an “Optics Taboo” at this event.

Social: Holiday Potluck December 8, 2017 (32 Attendees) A potluck dinner was held to celebrate Christmas, the New Year, and the end of the semester. Chicken wings and drinks were provided by the student chapter. Attendees provided sides and desserts. The event concluded with an interactive, yet competitive game called, “Optics Taboo” created by the student officers.

Summer 2018 A student run conference that will take place either in Dayton and Indiana in the summer of 2018. If it takes place in Dayton, this will need a significant commitment of effort by the chapter to successfully put on a conference. If in Indiana, a number of chapter members will travel to the conference to present their research to other members of the optics community.
