FALL SPORTS

CROSS COUNTRY (BOYS / GIRLS)DESCRIPTION: The season begins the end of August and runs through the end of October. There are two team levels: junior varsity and varsity.REQUIREMENTS: Student must have a current physical on file, follow good conduct code, and meet school and Department of Education academic requirements.FEE: $150LETTERING REQUIREMENTS: Varsity letter winners are determined by points gained in meets and at the coach’s discretion.HEAD COACH: Tim Ives/Loran Storts

GOLF (BOYS)DESCRIPTION: The season begins the second week of August and runs through the second week of October. There are three team levels: froshmore, junior varsity and varsity.REQUIREMENTS: Student must have a current physical on file, follow good conduct code, and meet school and Department of Education academic requirements.FEE: $170 LETTERING REQUIREMENTS: Complete the season in good standing and participate in 25% of possible varsity meets.Be a member of the JV (80% of all season matches) when varsity qualifies for the state tournament. Be a medalist at a varsity tournament. Be a senior and a member of the golf team for all four seasons.HEAD COACH: Ron Gray

FOOTBALLDESCRIPTION: The season begins early August and runs through mid-November. There are four team levels: freshmen, sophomore, junior varsity and varsity.REQUIREMENTS: Student must have a current physical on file, follow good conduct code, and meet school and Department of Education academic requirements.FEE: $210LETTERING REQUIREMENTS: Juniors-Must be in good standing within the program and have no unexcused absences from practice throughout the course of the season. Seniors-Student-athletes that are in good standing within the program and participate for two years will earn a letter. If a senior

was not out as a junior, they will fall under the junior requirements. Any underclassmen who have earned the right to be on the varsity team will be treated as juniors for lettering expectations. *Student-athletes that violate the good conduct policy of DCHS or violate team rules may not qualify for a letter under the above requirements. This will be the decision of the football coaching staff. *If a player is injured, the expectations for attending practice remain the same. All doctors appointments, rehab, etc. must be pre-approved each day.HEAD COACH: Tom Wilson

Grades 9 through 12 only. Students try out for all cheerleading (football, basketball, wrestling) in the spring. They receive a score from judges. FEE: Uniform and accessories. SWIM (GIRLS)DESCRIPTION: The season begins the end of August and runs through the first part of November. There are two team levels: junior varsity and varsity.REQUIREMENTS: Student must have a current physical on file, follow good conduct code, and meet school and Department of Education academic requirements.FEE: $180LETTERING REQUIREMENTS: Attend practice regularly and be present at all meets. Show a willingness to practice, train and compete. Follow all training rules set by the coaching staff. Show team spirit, sportsmanship and competitive desire. Finish the season in good standing with the team and coaching staff. A violation of the rules governing athletics as set by Dowling Catholic High School will result in the loss of earned points or times and starting over again to achieve the qualifications. CHEERLEADING (BASKETBALL AND WRESTLING)DESCRIPTION: The seasons begins the end of November and runs through the middle of March. There are three squad levels: freshmen, sophomore and varsity. DANCE (ALSO A FALL SPORT)DESCRIPTION: The season begins the middle of August and runs through late spring. There is only one dance squad, consisting of 12-18 dancers. REQUIREMENTS: Student must have a current physical on file, follow good conduct code, and meet school and Department of Education academic requirements. Students try out in the spring and receive a score from judges. Students become team members based on point system by judges.

BEST BUDDIES DESCRIPTION: An organization dedicated to enhancing the lives of people with intellectual disabilities by providing opportunities for one-to-one friendships and integrated employment, and by promoting inclusion of all people. Dowling students are buddies with students from Ruby Van Meter school. ACTIVITIES: Pizza parties, social gatherings, Ruby Van Meter Jamboree.MEMBERSHIP REQUIREMENTS: Grades 9-12.FEE: None. MODERATOR: Erin Gabriel

BIG BROTHERS BIG SISTERSDESCRIPTION: School-based partnership with Big Brothers Big Sisters for high school students to meet one-on-one with a ‘Little’ at the child’s school for 30-60 minutes each week at the end of their school day. A ‘Big’ spends time doing homework, playing games or just talking to build a relationship while increasing the child’s self-confidence and academic performance. ACTIVITIES: In addition to weekly meetings with ‘Little’, attendance at monthly meeting. Office to students 9-12. MEMBERSHIP REQUIREMENTS: A school-year commitment. An official match with a Little through Big Brothers Big Sisters (application process required) and personal transportation (to either Hillside Elementary or Clive Elementary).FEE: None.MODERATORS: Rebecca Cooling and Taylor O’Tool

BISHOP DRUMM STUDENT GUILDDESCRIPTION: The members are charged with taking residents of Bishop Drumm to and from mass, visit with residents, participate as an usher, reader, song leader, and /or Eucharistic minister. ACTIVITIES: Bring Spring into Bishop DrummMEMBERSHIP REQUIREMENTS: None.FEE: None.MODERATORS: Barb Hemann

CHRISTMAS BASKETSDESCRIPTION: An all-school project led by the senior class to assist needy families during the holiday. Grades 9-12.ACTIVITIES: The entire school helps coordinate gift and grocery donations for needy families in the Greater Des Moines area. Seniors lead the project and deliver the gifts and groceries to the families. MEMBERSHIP REQUIREMENTS: Donation of gift items for baskets.FEE: None.MODERATORS: Jeff Ferguson

CHRYSALISDESCRIPTION: After school small group focused on the investment of safety, education, and economic empowerment of young women in our school.ACTIVITIES: Building connections and resources within the community, volunteer/service project, field trips and speakers, post grad planning, health/wellness education, stress management, and other enjoyable activities.MEMBERSHIP REQUIREMENTS: Females grades 9-12FEE: None.MODERATORS: Rebecca Cooling and Erin Gabriel

COMMUNITY OUTREACHDESCRIPTION: Develop young people’s commitment to support their community through volunteer efforts. Grades 9-12. ACTIVITIES: Raise money to benefit a worthy organization in the Des Moines community. Past sponsorships have included: “The Haven,” an after school program to provide a safe place for Moulton Grade School children. MEMBERSHIP REQUIREMENTS: Grades 11 and 12.FEE: None.MODERATOR: Paula Plasencia

ECO-CLUBDESCRIPTION: Educate and promote eco-friendliness in the Dowling community. Promote the new recycling program and provide outreach in the Des Moines community through eco-inspired projects.ACTIVITIES: Recycling program and other initiativesMEMBERSHIP REQUIREMENTS: Open to all studentsFEE: None.MODERATOR: Mike McGuire

ST. JOSEPH FALL PROJECTDESCRIPTION: An annual all-school project (typically on a Sunday in the fall) to raise money for or serve a worthy cause. The project is coordinated by the Leadership Team, which consists of seniors. Grades 9-12.ACTIVITIES: Activities vary, but have included: a work/clean-up day and meal packaging event and fundraising for Catholic Charities.MEMBERSHIP REQUIREMENTS: To be part of the Leadership Team, you have to be a member of the senior class.FEE: None.MODERATOR: Mike Rolf and Kurt Heinrich

FUTURE FARMERS OF AMERICADESCRIPTION: Build leadership skills and compete in career and leadership events. Network with other members nationally and within

various industries to help make community connections to provide future opportunities in education and careers. ACTIVITIES: Events include livestock judging, leadership events, career events, state and national Conferences, and other career related trips and conferences.MEMBERSHIP REQUIREMENTS: Members must take .5 credits per year or three full years of a combination of the following agricultural related coursework: Animal Science, Plant Science, Environmental Science, and Biotechnology. All members must have a supervised agricultural experience with documentation. FEE: $20 plus cost of jacket $50MODERATOR: Emily Van Manen

HABITAT FOR HUMANITYDESCRIPTION: Work in partnership with God and volunteers to eliminate poverty housing. Grades 9-12.ACTIVITIES: Students participate in building, fundraising and education/awareness advocacy activities. Students also assist with ReStore, a student-run home improvement store that offers tools and supplies at a fraction of the retail cost. Students must be 16 or older to work on-site where power tools are used.MEMBERSHIP REQUIREMENTS: Attendance at weekly meetings and participation in activities.FEE: None.MODERATOR: Chris Harbaugh

HANDMAIDS OF THE LORDDESCRIPTION: A club where young women can grow together in community and faith as they learn to imitate Mary, the Mother of God, in the virtues of humility, joy, charity, simplicity, obedience and purity.ACTIVITIES: Morning prayer, Handmaids of the Lord retreat, weekly rosary, afternoon Mass in the chapel, and various kinds of spiritual reflections.MEMBERSHIP REQUIREMENTS: Any girl can join.FEE: None.MODERATOR: Molly Cain and Elisabeth Currie

HDMC (HELPING THE DES MOINES COMMUNITY)DESCRIPTION: Student led group which provides service opportunities to help various organizations in and around Des Moines.ACTIVITIES: Meals served at Catholic Worker House, Youth Shelter, Bethel Mission, etc.MEMBERSHIP REQUIREMENTS: Open to any 9-12 grader.FEE: None.MODERATOR: Jeff Ferguson

KAIROSDESCRIPTION: A weekend spiritual experience which takes place at the Creighton Retreat Center. Held once a month, Thursday through Sunday, in October through May. This retreat is based on the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius and is led by DCHS seniors.ACTIVITIES: Prayer and reflection.MEMBERSHIP REQUIREMENTS: Juniors.FEE: $225MODERATOR: Christy Sheaff

LECTORS/EUCHARISTIC MINISTERSDESCRIPTION: Assisting with liturgies as lectors and ministers of the Eucharist. Grades 9-12.ACTIVITIES: Lectors and ministers of the Eucharistic Minister.FEE: None.MODERATOR: Fr. Zach Kautzky

LEGION OF OUR LADY MEN’S GROUPDESCRIPTION: A men’s group focused on prayer, fraternity and growth in the spiritual life. The group is committed to personal conversion, authentic manhood, and serving God and the Dowling Catholic community. ACTIVITIES: Mass, group prayer, social events and service trips.MEMBERSHIP REQUIREMENTS: Male students grades 9-12.FEE: None.MODERATOR: Fr. Zach Kautzky

METANOIADESCRIPTION: A 24-hour spiritual retreat for freshmen, takes place at St. Thomas More Center. The retreat is based on the Greek word “Metanoia,” which means change of heart.ACTIVITIES: Explore Christ’s presence in our lives through prayer, reflections and gamesMEMBERSHIP REQUIREMENTS: FreshmenFEE: $125MODERATOR: Christy Sheaff

ONE DOWLING FAMILYDESCRIPTION: Using discussions, presentations, and group activities, this group’s focus is to educate and develop awareness regarding gender and sexuality diversity and issues both historical and current.ACTIVITIES: Student-led activities are decided throughout the year.MEMBERSHIP REQUIREMENTS: Grades 9-12.FEE: None.MODERATOR: Mike McGuire, Taylor O’Tool, Father Kautzky

PEER TUTORSDESCRIPTION: Academic tutoring offered to students in grades K-12 throughout the school and community. Students provide individual tutoring at several elementary schools and at DCHS. ACTIVITIES: Trained Peer Helpers are used in one-to-one helping relationships and academic tutoring.MEMBERSHIP REQUIREMENTS: 3.7 GPA, able to minimally give one hour per week to tutor, apply in the spring.FEE: None.MODERATOR: Lauri Stilwill

PEOPLE-TO-PEOPLEDESCRIPTION: An international organization that develops leadership, cultural awareness and peace. Grades 9-12. ACTIVITIES: Fundraising for local and international causes, monthly meetings that include programs with guest speakers, socials, and project work time. Work with other service groups on large projects.MEMBERSHIP REQUIREMENTS: Active participation.FEE: $5MODERATOR: Erin Pommrehn

RADIXDESCRIPTION: The word Radix is Latin for “rooted.” It is also the base of the word “radical.” This senior retreat will explore our faith roots, what nourishes these roots and how roots help us withstand the storms. We will also discuss Jesus as a radical man-meaning rooted in scripture and prayer, family and tradition.ACTIVITIES: Prayer and reflection, group and private devotions. SERVICE OF SOLIDARITY (SOS)DESCRIPTION: An organization that helps the children of families who attend an ELL (English Language Learner) class at Trinity United Methodist

Church in Des Moines, IA. Our goal is for each child to feel that they are an integral part of a family. The goal for our DCHS group is to challenge ourselves to live more simply in solidarity with those who do not have a choice to do so.ACTIVITIES: Visit Trinity United Methodist Church two times a month to interact with the children by participating in various games and activities.MEMBERSHIP REQUIREMENTS: All students grades 9-12. Expected to participate fully in activities while at Trinity United Methodist Church. Commit to attend monthly club meetings and to a minimum of four visits to Trinity United Methodist Church this school year.FEE: None. MODERATOR: Teri Breck and Brenda Sullivan

SPECIAL OLYMPICSDESCRIPTION: Help coach, train and interact with special Olympians in swim and track events. Season runs March-May and requires weeknight commitments. BANDDESCRIPTION: This year-round activity provides students the opportunity to experience, through rehearsal and performance, instrumental music in a variety of styles. ACADEMIC DECATHLON DESCRIPTION: Participants study a set curriculum in 10 areas over the first six months of the school year. The curriculum changes each year. Recent areas of study have been WWI, Russia and the Environment. ACTIVITIES: Members study materials provided by the national organization on history, science, art, music and literature related to a common theme. They prepare and present speeches, participate in interview sessions, and spend a day taking tests over subjects covered. Regional Competition is held in Des Moines during January and State Competition is held in March (location TBD). HYPERSTREAMDESCRIPTION: Technology-based club focusing on app development, multimedia (Photoshop and video), robotics and cyber-defense. This club is not dedicated to programmers. Hyperstream explores many types of technology. Students learn to use various programs during the fall semester. Much of the spring semester is devoted to preparing for state competition. KNOWLEDGE BOWLDESCRIPTION: Students will practice for and compete in a statewide trivia contest that involves questions from all academic disciplines as well as current events and pop culture. Team based competition-two rounds played in the fall.ACTIVITIES: Students will form teams of five to compete, attend informational and practice meetings, compete in a computer round at Dowling, and the top scoring teams from the computer round will advance to the championships with buzzers against other schools from around the state.MEMBERSHIP REQUIREMENTS: Attendance of informational and practice meetings as well as competing in the official rounds. MAROONS IN HEALTH SCIENCES AND STEM CAREERSDESCRIPTION: In this program, DCHS students will have a unique opportunity to explore the many fields of health sciences and STEM careers. Students will be allowed to express interest in the program of choice on their registration, but must apply for admission through Student Services. KEMIN: Kemin is a Dowling Catholic family-owned nutritional ingredient manufacturer committed to improving the health and nutrition of the world with functional products that deliver maximum efficacy through science. The business includes 14 independent companies serving five industries in over 60 countries. Kemin uses cutting edge molecular technology to manufacture more than 500 specialty ingredients used by the feed and food industries and the health, nutrition and beauty markets. Students will work one-on-one with a scientist. Open to juniors and seniors who are accepted to the program.

MERCY: Students will have experiences at Mercy Medical Center, the state’s largest Catholic hospital, and Mercy College of Health Sciences, the only Catholic health-science college in the state. They will receive unique opportunities to gain a better understanding of the mission-focus of careers

in health science from leading healthcare experts and educations in our community. Students will complete mandatory federal and state compliance education and will be given access with medical facilities to experience first-hand the medical technology used to diagnose and treat diseases and disorders. Open to sophomores, juniors and seniors who are accepted to the program. ROCK VALLEY: This program allows students interested in the field of physical therapy the chance to work side-by-side with a physical therapist. The following rehabilitation topics will be covered during the visits: ankle, knee, hip, neck, lower back, shoulder, wrist, hand and elbow. Filing and office procedures will also be introduced. Open to seniors who are accepted to the program. MOCK TRIALDESCRIPTION: Courtroom-based competition where students role-play legal cases, arguing their case in front of judges. NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETYDESCRIPTION: To recognize and encourage academic achievement while developing other characteristics essential to good citizenship, including character, service and leadership. ACTIVITIES: Numerous service and leadership activities.MEMBERSHIP REQUIREMENTS: Selection for NHS takes place in the spring semester of junior year and/or fall semester of senior year. Students with a 3.7 cumulative GPA or above will be invited to participate in the selection process. A confidential faculty council will then review the selection materials completed by the candidate, along with the student’s Christian service hours on record with the school and five required letters of recommendation to determine inductees. Student must have been involved in at least two DCHS activities (or respective high school sponsored activities if a transfer student) for at least two years.

ROBOTICS CLUBDESCRIPTION: Teams design and construct a robot for the annual nationwide FIRST Tech Challenge Competition.ACTIVITIES: Members spend time working as a team to design and construct a robot, and attend various levels of competition (i.e. scrimmage, regional, statewide, etc.).MEMBERSHIP REQUIREMENTS: Meet and work for at least two hours per week.
