LIFELONG SERVICE I am going fishing. What an announcement! If asked

who made it, and not told it was a Bible quote, we might guess Grandpa or Uncle Fred, or admit, I said

that last summer! But it is a Bible quote, from today's Gospel. The person who said it also once

declared, You are the Christ, the Son of the living God. Yes, it's Peter! So today's announcement seems quite

the comedown. Last Sunday Jesus said, As the Father has sent me, so I send you. But Peter seems

determined to return to his pre-apostolic occupation, until Jesus intervenes, making Peter's later

announcement deeper, Lord, you know that I love you, and Peter's apostolic calling clearer, Tend my sheep.

Peter does so. Acts presents the consequences: Peter declares, We must obey God rather than men. As

Revelation proclaims, Worthy is the Lamb--to receive Peter's lifelong service, and ours.

TODAY ’S READINGS First Reading -- God exalted Jesus as leader and savior (Acts 5:27-32, 40b-41). Psalm -- I will praise you, Lord, for you have rescued me (Psalm 30). Second Reading -- To the Lamb be blessing and honor, glory and might (Revelation 5:11-14). Gospel -- When the disciples came ashore, they saw a charcoal fire with fish on it and bread (John 21:1-19 [1-14]).

READINGS FOR THE WEEK Monday: Acts 6:8-15; Ps 119:23-24, 26-27, 29-30; Jn 6:22-29 Tuesday: Acts 7:51 -- 8:1a; Ps 31:3cd-4, 6, 7b, 8a, 17, 21ab; Jn 6:30-35 Wednesday: Acts 8:1b-8; Ps 66:1-3a, 4-7a; Jn 6:35-40 Thursday: Acts 8:26-40; Ps 66:8-9, 16-17, 20; Jn 6:44-51 Friday: Acts 9:1-20; Ps 117:1bc, 2; Jn 6:52-59 Saturday: Acts 9:31-42; Ps 116:12-17; Jn 6:60-69 Sunday: Acts 13:14, 43-52; Ps 100:1-2, 3, 5; Rv 7:9, 14b-17; Jn 10:27-30

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION The Gospel today sees Peter and his

colleagues after the Resurrection, returning to Galilee and resuming the family business.

They are fishing by night. Although it is true that fish feed by night, the mention of

darkness here is more about the human spirit than it is about fishing advice. Modern life keeps darkness effectively under control;

much of the world has been glowing radiantly through the night for a century. Yet just as

surely as the Risen Christ breaks into Peter's fishing, so does he break into the usual

patterns of our own darkness, electric lights notwithstanding. It is Easter, and we are the

people of the light. In our tradition, Evening Prayer, celebrated in monasteries, parishes, cathedrals, and homes

everywhere, is a kind of solemn protest against the darkness and its claims, an act of

praise for our light-bearing God, and a commitment to carrying that light forward.

Sunset is a turning point of our day, felt less acutely in an electrified world, but still an effective reminder that one day darkness

overtakes us all. Yet our Eastering has taught us in a hundred ways that the victory belongs to the Bearer of Light. Easter summons us to transform our everyday blackouts, perhaps in

a way as simple as a whispered prayer of thanks at evening for the blessings of the day. --James Field, Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co.

A biblical walk through the Mass: Edward Sri Olympic swimmer Missy Franklin: Accepting the good and bad from God

This year faith has taken center stage at the Olympics, and with all the news articles about successful athletes who take their faith seriously you might get the impression that a strong faith in God naturally leads to a gold medal. Experience teaches us that often the reverse is true. Take Job for example. Or ask Missy Franklin, the breakout star of the 2012 Olympics who won four gold medals and one bronze in London, becoming “one of America’s new sweethearts.” Franklin is well known for her strong Christian faith, having attended Regis Jesuit High School in Aurora, Colorado. She told Catholic News Service, “My experiences at Regis Jesuit have absolutely impacted my spiritual life, in so many ways. I am considering converting to Catholicism; I’m currently Protestant… Going into Regis Jesuit, my faith was not a very big aspect of my life. Taking my first theology classes, going to my first Masses, going on my first retreats, I began to realize how important God is in my life and how much I love him and need him.” In an interview with BeliefNet she further explained her time at the Catholic high school, “One of my favorite times is going to our beautiful school chapel and spending time with God… I attended Kairos with my Regis Jesuit sisters and it changed my life forever. I now really work on keeping my faith strong.” Some people might think Missy’s strong faith must have helped her win another four more gold medals in Rio. How did she do? After arriving in Rio, she failed to qualify for the 200-meter freestyle final and only won a gold medal because of her performance in a preliminary heat for the 200-meter freestyle relay; she was replaced in the relay final by another swimmer. She told Good Morning America, “By far, it’s been the most disappointed I’ve ever been in any athletic performance, so for that to line up at the Olympics is not ideal, obviously… But, you know, that positivity just comes from knowing that I did the best that I possibly could and it just wasn’t my week… It’s heartbreaking that all the hard work and sacrifices I made just didn’t show up, but I know that they will eventually and I think I’m going to be so much stronger after this experi-ence.” Franklin shows us that faith can also help a person see the big picture when it appears that God is no longer present. She was able to see through the poor performances and recognize that the losses will make her “much stronger” in the long run. Faith gives a person a proper perspective on life. In the end, the deep religious convictions of the Olympic athletes this year attest to the reality that faith helps a person in times of both success and failure. God is present in the good and bad in life, and teaches us to accept both as gifts for his greater glory. “We accept good things from God; should we not accept evil?” (Job 2:10)

Weekly Calendar “God prepared my heart to respond that way,” says U.S. runner who helped rival After colliding into a fellow runner during a 5,000-meter qualifying heat on Tuesday, United States runner Abbey D’Agostino could have kept on running. Her coach even told her before the race, “If you go down…get up, dust [yourself] off, have a quick look around and then get right back to run-ning.” Instead she turned around and helped New Zealander Nikki Hamblin stand up and encouraged her to finish the race. Before that moment Hamblin had never met D’Agostino and was shocked by the selfless concern she had in the middle of an Olympic race. Hamblin said later about the encounter, “That girl is the Olympic spirit right there… I’ve never met her before. Such an amazing woman.” Hamblin and D’Agostino continued to race together side-by-side, as it turned out D’Agostino was more severely injured than Hamblin and was struggling to finish the race. The awe-inspiring event is being described as the definition of “true Olympic spirit” and a wonderful example of “sportsmanship,” but really it is better described as an expression of D’Agostino’s deep and abiding Christian faith. She said in a statement to the media, “Although my actions were instinctual at that moment, the only way I can and have rationalized it is that God prepared my heart to respond that way… This whole time here he’s made clear to me that my experience in Rio was going to be about more than my race performance — and as soon as Nikki got up I knew that was it.” D’Agostino has always been outspoken about her faith in God, sharing it frequently on social media. She credits her faith in being a driving force behind her athletic career: “I felt the peace that comes with acknowledging that I’m not going to run this race with my own strength. And I think that acknowledging those fears before God is what allowed me to feel that peace and I was drawn to it and I wanted to know a God who would work that way in my life.” Besides keeping a rigorous training routine, D’Agostino wakes-up each morning listening to worship music, reading her Bible and journaling about the many graces she has received. Resting on Sunday has also been a big part of her spiritual and physical life, allowing her body to heal and her soul to be lifted up in prayer. She often feels God’s presence while she runs and it pushes her forward to do her best. D’Agostino’s simple act of kindness will not earn her any Olympic medals and the episode may not be officially transcribed in the record books. Even lining up at the starting line on Friday would have given her a standing ovation by the crowd, but she won’t be afforded that spotlight because of her injury. However, her self-sacrificing act of charity will continue to inspire the world for years to come; it will endure much longer in the hearts of all than the gold medals that are given out that night. In the end, D’Agostino shows the world that winning isn’t everything. As Mother Teresa once said, “God does not require that we be successful, only that we be faithful.” (This article was written by Philip Kosloski and can be found at: http://aleteia.org/2016/08/18/god-prepared-my-heart-to-respond-that-way-says-u-s-runner-who-helped-rival/hash.vsqqswBS.dpuf)

To Jesus our Friend O Jesus! Your are my true Friend, my only Friend. You take part in all my misfortunes; You rake them on Yourself; you know how to change them into blessings. You listen to me with the greatest kindness when I relate my troubles to You and You have always balm to pour on my wounds. I find You at all times; I find You everywhere; You never go away; if I have to change my dwelling, I find You wherever I go. AMEN. St. Claude Colombiere
