How Do We Treat The Messenger? Let us not be too hasty in defining who is "the
wicked one" and who (namely us) is “just”! We are very quick to label others as evil, because we tend to label ourselves as good guys. We do not like it when we are brought up short by a prophetic voice that brings us some bad news about our own behavior. We do not like to be reproached for transgressions of the law or charged with violations of our training.
We may condemn and abuse those who bring us up against these truths about ourselves when, if we were really good, we would thank them for helping to keep us on the right path. This is the way they treated the prophets and the way they treated Jesus. Is this also the way we treat those whose message we do not like?

Offertory Giving In today’s Gospel, we learn that the disciples of
Jesus had been discussing among themselves who was the greatest. Jesus is about to turn their idea as well as our society’s idea of “greatness” upside down. He embraces a child and tries to help the Twelve understand that to be great is to be focused on something other than themselves. Jesus teaches that true “greatness” lies in being a good steward of those who are not great: welcoming one who is not viewed as great by our society’s standards, like the child, the innocent, the vulnerable, the suffering, those who are outside our comfortable circle of fam-ily, friends, companions and colleagues, those who need a welcome. Jesus redefines our notion of great-ness. How do we define greatness? Is our notion of greatness consistent with the teachings of Jesus Christ?

The Life In The Spirit Seminar “The Life in the Spirit” Seminar is a
one day event open to men and women. Come deeper with Jesus and Mary and experience the fullness of life in the Holy Spirit. This Seminar prepares a person to receive the Baptism in the Spirit and has revolutionized the Chris-tian lives of millions of Catholics all over the world. Treasures From Our Tradition How long have there been parochial schools in the
United States? Longer than you may imagine. The Jes-uit fathers opened Saint Mary School in Philadelphia in 1782 in the first light of independence. Catholic and Protestant squabbles about the nature of education forced the Fathers to make this risky and innovative venture in the heart of the city. The school was closed by a devastating fire in 1902, but reopened in 1968 as St. Mary Interparochial School, the first example of a shared parochial school. It is also the only Catholic school within the confines of a national park. This is the "Mother School" of this uniquely American institu-tion. Many parochial schools, especially in "national parishes," were established to preserve the culture and language of the "old country," and also to protect young people from prejudice.
In other countries, Ireland for one, the Church is authorized to run national schools, sometimes under the sponsorship of a parish. In still other places, such as Quebec, publicly-funded "separate schools" were administered by the Church. Wherever the state funds Catholic schools, normally enrollment is guaranteed to all applicants. The Quebec system was dismantled in 1998 when the state decided to reorganize schools along linguistic lines rather than religious affiliation. Parochial schools require considerable sacrifice, but they endure as a distinctive treasure of the Church in the United States. Rev. James Field

Sts. Michael, Gabriel, Raphael Archangels—September 29
Today, we celebrate the feast of three Archangels, Sts. Michael, Gabriel and Raphael, the great heralds of salvation and defenders against the salva-tion and defenders against the power of evil. St Michael is guardian and protector of the Church, from its roots in Israel to the Church of today and beyond. In Hebrew, his name means “who is like God?” St. Gabriel, whose name means “hero of God,” announces that John the Baptist will be born to Elizabeth and Zechariah. He is entrusted with the important task of revealing to Mary that she will bear the Son of God. Then there is St. Raphael, whose name is Hebrew for “God has healed.” He is named in Tobit 12 as the one standing in the presence of God and in 1 Enoch (early Jewish writing) as the healer of the Earth.

St Pio Of Pietrelcina—September 23 Did the World War II American
flyer really see Padre Pio in midair, preventing the bombing of his village below? Did Pio actually "bilocate" in Italy, the Holy Land, even America, as countless witnesses testified? Or "read hearts" before penitents spoke? What of the stigmata, Christ's wounds imprinted on Padre Pio's hands, feet, and side? John Paul II, who as a young man visited Pio, never mentioned these extraordi-nary elements at the canonization. Instead, the Pope spoke of "trials accepted with love," referring per-haps to sanctions restricting Pio's faculties for hear-ing confessions and celebrating public Mass, im-posed because of criticism, later discredited, sent to the Vatican; of Pio's offering his sufferings in union with Jesus' passion for a suffering world; of his con-tinual availability to sinners seeking direction and absolution; of Padre Pio's prayer that blossomed in charity, especially through his "House for the Relief of Suffering," a healthcare facility that anticipated by decades today's holistic partnering of medical sci-ence and spirituality. Finally, how comforting for us "ordinary" Christians, this extraordinary saint's most frequent advice: "Pray, hope, and don't worry!" Peter Scagnelli
Sts. Cosmas & Damian—September 26 Cosmas and Damian were brothers
possibly twins, born in Arabia, who practiced medicine without accepting money for their services. They be-came known in the East as the anargy-roi, meaning “moneyless one” or “moneyless healers.” At Egaea in Cili-cia, where they lived, they enjoyed the highest esteem of the people.
When the persecution under Diocletian broke out, their very prominence rendered them “marked.” As vibrant witnesses to the Christian faith, they were arrested. When they refused to renounce their faith and engage in idolatrous worship, they were behead-ed and cast into the sea. They are patron saints of twins, confectioners, the sightless and many medical professions (for example, physicians, nurses and dentists). Their names are included in Eucharistic Prayer I.
St. Vincent De Paul—September 27 Vincent was born of poor par-
ents in the village of Pouy in Gasco-ny, France, about 1580. He enjoyed his first schooling under the Francis-can Fathers at Acqs. Such had been his progress in four years that a gen-tleman chose him as subpreceptor to his children, and he was thus ena-bled to continue his studies without being a burden to his parents. In 1596, he went to the University of Toulouse for theological studies, and there he was ordained a priest in 1600.
In 1605, on a voyage by sea from Marseilles to Narbonne, he fell into the hands of African pirates and was carried as a slave to Tunis. His captivity lasted about two years, until Divine Providence ena-bled him to effect his escape. After a brief visit to Rome he returned to France, where he became pre-ceptor in the family of Emmanuel de Gondy, Count of Joigny and general of the galleys of France. As a French priest, he gradually became aware of the growing disparity between the rich and poor; there-fore, he laid the framework for the Servants of the Poor, which provided for the physical needs of the poor. Recognizing the call to care for not only their physical needs, but also their spiritual needs, he es-tablished a society of priests—the Congregation of the Mission (Vincentians), or Lazarists, so named because the Priory of St. Lazarus was dedicated to preaching to peasants, catechizing the marginalized and performing other charitable works.
In collaboration with St. Louise Montfort de Marillac, he founded the Daughters of Charity, a new community of sisters, not bound by traditional vows or enclosure who are devoted to the sick, or-phaned and imprisoned. St. Vincent is the patron saint of charitable societies. Many day care centers, hospitals, thrift stores and soup kitchens are named in his honor.
St. Wenceslaus—September 28 Wenceslaus is known because of the popular
Christmas carol “Good King Wenceslaus.” This an-cient carol is not based on historical events; it illus-trates the fame King Wenceslaus received because of his heroic life. His attempt to evangelize the Bohe-mians was not received well by some, including his brother who eventually murdered him.
