Dear Antonians

St Antony’s is launching the Antonian Fund to provide much needed support for a range of activities at the College. We very much hope that you will help us keep the College the lively and stimulating place it has always been.

We are all proud of the unique nature of this College, with its specialisation in international and area studies. The breadth and significance of St Antony’s research activities and its strong sense of community never cease to amaze me, and I feel proud to be part of such a dynamic and diverse community. Our students and Fellows study the world and we rely increasingly in philanthropic giving to fund their activities. We also want to make it possible for the best students from any country or background to study at St Antony’s, irrespective of their means: at present, figures show that only 21% of our Social Sciences students and only 20% of our Humanities students are fully funded.

St Antony’s is one of the poorer Colleges in the University of Oxford, and government support for the Social Sciences and Humanities is being cut back sharply. Your generosity is therefore more crucial than ever. The Antonian Fund supports a range of initiatives that enhances all aspects of academic and student life across the College. Gifts will provide vital funding to students in the form of scholarships and research grants, funding for College-based academic initiatives of all St Antony’s Fellows and the improvement of sports and social facilities. All the projects supported by the Antonian Fund will have a direct and positive impact on life at College, enabling Fellows to carry out their work and students to make the most of their time here and help them on their way into their future careers. All donations to the Antonian Fund, large or small, make a difference. The success of the Antonian Fund depends entirely on the generosity of Antonians and good friends of the College such as you.

Thank you in advance for all your support.

With the Antonian Fund, the College supports a range of initiatives that will enhance all aspects of academic and student life across St Antony’s.

David Landau, MPhil Politics, 2003: “Contributing to the Antonian Fund is a direct investment in the students that make St Antony’s such a wonderful, thoughtful, and inspiring place to live

and study. I often think back on all of the wonderful experiences my friends and I had - long chats after meals, winning blades, partnering with professors and colleagues on papers - and I see in the Fund an opportunity to continue those meaningful academic and social traditions. With the Fund, I’m not just contributing to the College, I’m investing in College life.”

The Warden’s ScholarshipsIn a situation where external funding for graduates is particularly hard to find, especially for the social sciences and the humanities, St Antony’s is committed to offering scholarships to the brightest and most capable students irrespective of their means. The Fund will ensure the College will be able to attract students of the highest calibre from all over the world, and support them in their pursuit of academic excellence, enabling them to fulfil their potential without being distracted by financial concerns.

Travel and ResearchDue to the College’s specialism in international area studies, St Antony’s students and Fellows often require funding for travel and research, for example to undertake fieldwork or attend a conference.

Life at St Antony’sSt Antony’s is committed to fund activities that enrich the student environment and experience. Funding for sports equipment and projects in the Library, Graduate Common Room and other buildings and facilities will be allocated following student-led requests. St Antony’s International Review will also be supported for its on-going publications.

Ulrike Esther Franke, Managing Editor of the St Antony’s International Review (STAIR): “STAIR has received funding for launch events for our issues from St Antony’s College, which has allowed us to invite interesting speakers and organise great events. These events are good opportunities for students from St Antony’s and other Colleges to hear about topics currently debated by scholars of International Affairs. We are very grateful for this support.”

If 10 Antonians donate £40 a month for three years, the College will be able to fund a scholarship covering the annual fee of an MPhil.

If one Antonian donates £400 a year for three years, a full travel grant to benefit research fieldwork will be awarded.

If one Antonian donates £15 a month for three years, STAIR will be able to pay for two launch events.

Writing-up BursariesThese bursaries are aimed at supporting students nearing completion of their DPhil with funding for their remaining living costs. Awards are made on the basis of both academic achievement and financial need.

Academic InitiativesThis category is designed to support special lectures and workshops, post-doctoral fellowships, and any other worthy academic activities.

Paul Chaisty, Director of the Russian and Eurasian Studies Centre and GB Fellow: “Without College funding, I would not have been able to conduct a mass survey of Russian political attitudes in 2012. This survey was the first systematic study of Russian popular attitudes towards the electoral protests of 2011 and 2012, and the results were published this year. The dataset is a unique historical resource that will benefit generations of researchers.”

Allocation of FundingFunding will be allocated in response to requests from students and academics. To enrich academic life for students and Fellows alike, the Antonian Fund will award grants for conferences, special lectures and workshops, post-doctoral scholarships, and many other worthy academic activities.

ImpactSt Antony’s invites all those who are keen to have a direct and positive impact on life at College to donate. Donors may wish to donate to ‘wherever the need is greatest’ or express a preference for how their gift is spent. Donations of all sizes make a real and significant difference in many important areas, such as scholarships, travel and research grants, academic workshops and student and Fellow activities. Your generosity will be vital and hugely appreciated by the students and Fellows of St Antony’s College.

If five Antonians donate £10 a month for three years, the Antonian Fund will be able to support an academic workshop.
