Newsletter No 3 Wisdom and Courage 28th March 2019

On Monday the 25th of March the year 3 - 6's were lucky enough to meet the wonderful Cass from Roaming Reptiles and all of her reptile friends in Science! The students got to see and touch some Australian snakes and lizards while learning all about these amazing animals, some students were even lucky enough to hold them! This experience compliments our study of Biology this term and I'm looking forward to more fun science adventures in the year to come. Miss Prakhoff

Hello to our parents, caregivers and families,

It feels as if each time I write for a newsletter, we reach another milestone, this one being that we are almost at the end of Term 1. With only 2 weeks to go, it is a good time to reflect on the positives and challenges faced in Term 1, and use the lessons to keep us driving towards sustainable success. First and foremost, the re-structure presented a range of challenges, that I’m proud to say, those within the school community managed very well. The decision to create the new class was based on the positives outweighing the negatives, and this decision has already proven to be the correct one. With that however, we know we will soon say goodbye to one staff member who assisted to make the transition smooth. Mrs Corry Easther will go on Maternity Leave at the end of this term. She is awaiting the birth of her first child and we wish her every success for her time away from the school. We look forward to her visiting after her little one arrives, as well as her eventual return. Despite the fact that staff are always working hard to support the Literacy and Numeracy development of students, they still continue to find time to provide rich learning opportunities in other important areas. We have enjoyed:

* Performing Arts visits from Olman and Rickeeta Walley; * Science incursions about reptiles; * Literacy Centre visits to motivate a love of reading; * Multiple visiting coaches for sports including tennis, cricket and rugby; * Harmony Day and NDA against Bullying and Violence activities; * Displays of AUSLAN learning; * Excursions and meetings with the School Council for Student Leaders; * Drumbeat and Clubs programs; * Year 5/6 Transition visits with Kiara College and Hampton SHS; ...and the list goes on. The staff have also spent time engaging in their own learning and development, with student success benefitting from the quality professional learning being provided to staff. I am proud to say we have an active staff, who seek opportunities to improve, and accept feedback on ways to build their capacity. Staff have engaged in key professional learning recently, and will continue to do so in:

* Classroom Management Skills; * Digital Technology in the classroom; * Team-Teach (positive de-escalation of behaviour) * Electronic Whiteboard use; * Keeping our Workplace Safe; and * WA Positive Behaviour Support (WAPBS).

You may notice a theme with the PL foci, being around positive engagement and behaviour support of students. This is very deliberate in that a well-managed and clearly structured school, classroom or learning program, provides students the platform needed to succeed. It is also directly addressing feedback from the 2018 National School Opinion Surveys from staff, students and parents. The WAPBS journey is just beginning, and I am looking forward to our lead staff in this area presenting to the whole staff, the School Council, the P&C Committee and the wider LPS community over the coming weeks. I invite the whole community to join with us as we seek to highlight the wonderful successes produced by our students and staff, and address any challenges that arise along the way.
