Chriss Fedyk (Talent Scout); Lidia Lipkiewicz (Communications Portfolio, Hromada); Slavko Kowalczuk (Talent Scout/Archives); Melanie Merlino (Technical Expert) Winter 2010, Issue 2 We had a phenomenal response to Issue 1 of Stook Stook and would like to say “thank you” for the emails, text messages, phone calls and all the valuable feedback. Please continue to keep in touch and if possible forward Stook Stook onto others and/or print off copies for those who don’t have email! “As an old Adelaide Uke it was great to be able to read and reacquaint the brain with Uke events/people back home. A very good concept that will keep tradition alive and relevant to us oldies and the younger Ukes.” ‐ George Shlahtych “This is great. Suggestion – please name people in photos – people change, grow up and I can’t recognize them anymore.” ‐ Olga Dudinski “It’s nice to be in touch with the community again.” ‐ Tina Sudomlak “In addition to keeping the Australian Ukrainian community sound, Stook Stook is a great read for us Ukrainians by marriage.” ‐ Matt Bauerochse As for naming people in photos it’s a logistical nightmare, so please, when forwarding photos, include names! Last but not least, in June of this year, Ivan Mark Dnistriansky (pictured below) became a member of the Order of Australia (OAM) in the General Division as part of the Queen’s Birthday Honours List. From all Ukrainians everywhere – “slava, slava, slava!” The Editorial Team The Hromada Committee members SA read with interest your comments and feedback regarding Issue 1 of Stook Stook and we very much look forward to hearing more from you in the future. Much has been happening in and around Adelaide over the last few months (check out the Ukrainians in SA pages). We are particularly proud of the younger members in our community who recently took part in the Jacyk Ukrainian International Language Competition. A special congratulations to Nastia Novotarska, Dima Sydorenko and Marko Kvasniuk who won first prize in their respective age groups. Well done to all! Ukrainians Say: Mixed Marriages Harvey Fernandez on Nina Sakson

WhatfirstattractedyoutoNina?

Never mess with your mate’s sister. It is a lawamongstmates, youthinkaboutit, butneveracton it. Two years of playing indoor soccer withyour mate and he takes you along to a mutualfriend’s birthday party, where you are living inMelbourneonlytomeethissister.Lookbutdon’ttouch, that is the law. Harvey (real nameJavier)Fernandez, a Spanish‐born Aussie, neverimaginedthathewouldonedaymarrythatgirl, whohebelievesfedhimfartoomuchalcoholforanyone’s drinking capacity(maybe it was theother way around!). Harvey could not keep hiseyes off of Nina, who was wearingsomecrazyfloral jeans and dancing with a friend ofhers.Likemanymaleshebeganthecourtshipbygiving Nina grief about those jeans saying thatsuch attire was just not suitable for Melbournefashion. Nevertheless, the foot was in thedoor, and thenight filledwith laughter, dancingand trying to persuade a change in thedressetiquette! After a fewmonthsNinamovedfromAdelaide toMelbourneandmoved in with herbrother, andto be closer to Harvey, and Iguess…therestishistory.

AfavouriteUkrainianmoment?

That question is far too easy. It was the 14th ofJune 2006, Ukrainian Hall Hindmarsh, 2006WorldCupgame,SpainvsUkraine.Iwasthelonesoldier,dressedwithmyredandyellow,mydevilhorns on and my drum beating to the Spanishchants, this was my moment against theUkrainians.Somemayhavecalleditadeathwishbut you have to take some chances in life andsoccer was no chance, I knew how good mySpanish boys were. In true Ukrainian style theUkrainian club was packed to the rafters withblueandyellowflowingthroughthebar.Stickingout like a sore thumb, well, that was anunderstatement! I was ridiculed and even hadsome of the boys throw things atme but I wasstrong against these Ukrainian hooligans.Eventhe wife was dressed in blue and yellow!Whenthe Ukrainians got up and sang their anthempassionately it was a little overwhelming, butIjustknew. I madenumerous bets, I couldn’tback down. David Villa 3 goals andFernandoTorres 1, final score 4‐0. That’s right,Spain was in, and we had smashed theUkrainians! Didmy drum beat that night? Sourand bitter the Ukrainians were, and someboysnever paid their debt. Nomatter, because VivaEspana!

HowhaveyouasparentsengagedyourfamilyinUkrainiantradition/culture?

The easier question is, what aren’t we doing atthemomenttoengageourgirlsinUkrainianandSpanish culture. We have three beautifuldaughters Tiana Eva (7 years), Kalyna Juliana(5years) and Zara Elena (10 months) who aregrowingupdoingeverythingtheycanUkrainian.Currently the two eldest are actively involvedwiththe Yevshan dancinggroup, UkrainianScouting Organisation Plast, Church with FrEugene Kvasniuk on Torrens Road, UkrainianSchool, and every form of fundraising andfunctionthatwecanattendorhelpoutwith, wedo.
