Ukrainians Say First Impressions Of Ukraine

I’dheardallaboutUkrainefor28yearsthroughmygrandparentsandfamilyfriendsandfinallyhadtheopportunitytogoandseeformyselfin2009.MyfirstsurprisewasthatalthoughIheardalotofRussianbeingspoken,myrustyUkrainianlanguageskillsweregoodenoughtocommunicateprettywellinmostplacesthatIvisited.Mytato,brotherTarasandIstayedwithtwolotsofrelativesinlittlecountryvillagesinEasternUkraine.Althoughtheaccommodationwasfairlybasic(farmlife)thepeoplewereverygenerous,totheextentofgivinguptheircomfortablebedsforus.Weaccumulated(asgifts)6bottlesofvodka;4bottlesofUkrainianhome‐brewalcohol;about5kilosofUkrainianstylecrockery,andacopiousamountofseedstoplantourowntomatoesandcucumberswhenwegotbacktoAustralia(that’sifwecouldgetitthemthroughcustoms!).Theirlivesaresodifferenttoours‐theyseemedextremelysurprisedtohearthatwedidn'thaveatractorathomeinthebackyard,andwhenItoldthemthatIcouldn'tmilkacow,theysaid,“Don'tworry,it'seasy!It'sjustlikemilkingagoat!”

Thecountrysideisbeautiful,withfieldsofcornandsunflowersasfarasyoucansee.

WedroveintothecapitalKyiv,alovelycity,verymetropolitanwithlotsofbeautifuloldbuildingsandgold‐domedchurches,includingStSophiaCathedralwhosedomesareapparentlyplatedwith7.4kgof24caratgold!Ahighlyrecommended‘mustsee’country.‐SonyaDiakiw(adaptedfromanemail,July2009)Myfirstvisit,backinDecember2006,wasduringwinterandmyoverwhelmingimpressionwasthatKyivwascold,greyanddrab.Thisfeelingwasexacerbatedbythefactthateveryonecarriedadepressedandwithdrawnlookaboutthem.ComparedwithmymostrecentvisitinAugust2009,Kyivpresenteditselftomeasabright,bustlingandcosmopolitancity.Iwasamazedattheimpactaseasonwasabletohaveonmyimpression.

Havingsaidthis,IenjoyedthesightsofLvivduringmyfirsttripandfoundthatIwastakeninbythecharmofthecityanditslovelyarchitecture.Whenitcomesdowntoit,IloveoldbuildingsandLvivhadplentyofthem.TheKarpatywerealsoparticularlypicturesqueduringwinterandalthoughthesnowwasabitthinontheground,IknowwhichskiresortI’dbevisitingifIwereawealthierpersoninUkraine.

MyhusbandMichaelandIhadpreviouslyvisitedmanyofthesignificantattractionsinKyivsoonoursecondvisitwewereabletopassourtimewithmorerelaxingandhedonisticpursuitslikecruisingalongtheDnipro;goingtoaKyiv

Dynamosoccermatchandmyfavouritepastimeofall,windowshopping!IwouldhighlyrecommendstayinginthecentreofKyivbecauseit’sclosetoeverythingandtrolleybusesaren’tgenerallyabarreloffun.Andmakesureyou’reclosetoPuzataHatabecauseit’sthemostamazingUkrainianfast‐foodjointaround!Oneday,I’llbringitovertoAustralia–peoplewillgonutsoverit.‐MelanieMerlino

Jan and Oryst Tkacz OrystandJanetTkaczhavebeencompetingasapartnershipinDanceSportsince1993.TheystarteddancingsociallyandsoonwereentrancedbythesportofcompetinginBallroomCompetitions,Festivals,andChampionships.ThroughcompetitiveballroomtheyhaveprogressedthroughthegradesofEgradeandDgradebeforethechangeto“levels”,havingachievedlevel5intwostyles–ModernStandard[Waltz,Tango,SlowFoxTrot,QuickstepandVienneseWaltz]andNewVogue.

TheyregularlycompetebothinhometownAdelaideandtheeasternstatesofAustralia,attheOpenlevelofcompetition–thehighestpossibleatpresent–havinghadmultiplesuccessesinVictoria,NewSouthWales,AdelaideandperformancesattheAustralianChampionshipsinMelbourne.SydneyandCanberra.In1998JanetandOryst[alongwiththeirchildrenpartneringeachother]travelledtoSingaporeandChineseTaipei,competingininternationalcompany–majorachievementwassecondplaceinSeniorLatininTaipei.In2009JanetandOrysttravelledtoBlackpoolintheUnitedKingdom–aMeccaforinternationaldancersacrosstheglobetocompeteintheBlackpoolDanceSportFestival.ItwasherethattheywitnessedthememorableperformancebyaUkrainianProfessionalcouplegetting2ndintheProBallroom.TheycontinueatpresenttorepresentSAacrossAustraliainmasters2competitionmakingSemiFinalsandFinalsoftheOpenCompetition.



Ukrainians in Action Wasyl Labaz

WasylLabazandhisfamilyarrivedinPortMelbourneon21March1949,andafterafewmonths,thefamilymovedtotheUranquintyMigrantCentre,afewkilometressouthofWaggaWagga.Inlate1951,Wasyl,hisparentsandsisterHaniamovedtoSouthAustralia,andsettledinCroydonPark,asuburbthat,post1947,hadattractedmanyyoungUkrainianfamilies.ItwasinthisenvironmentthatWasyl’sloveoftheUkrainianlanguage,traditionandculturedeveloped,thrivedandcontinuedthroughouthislife.WasyltaughtUkrainianFolkDancingintheUkrainiancommunityfor30years.Intheearly60sWasylwasadancerintheacclaimedfolkdancinggroup“Kolomyjka”andwithhisexpertiseinchoreography,hedirectedthefolkdancinggroup“Hopak”from1965‐1993.

Wasylisagifteddesignerandillustratorandmanyoftheanniversaryposters,illustrationsandpaintingsthathavebeenproducedforourcommunity,havebeenWasyl’swork.Wasylhasdonatedhistimeandtalentmostgenerously.TheleadlightwindowsintheUkrainianCatholicChurch,OurLadyofProtection,isonethatWasylisextremelyproudofandexemplifieshisgraphicexpertise.Thisworkisincommemorationof1,000yearsofChristianityinUkraine.Wasylhasbeenanarchivistsince1990,andhislatestprojectistocreatearecordofpioneersofUkrainiansettlementinSouthAustralia.Thisisbeingachievedinthefirstinstance,byformulatingaconciserecordofalldeceasedUkrainianCatholics.RecordsfromtheUkrainianCatholicChurcharebeingutilised,alongwithvisitationandaccesstocemeteryrecords.CopiesofthearchivalrecordsareondisplayintheUkrainianCatholicchurchesatWayvilleandWoodvilleforparishionerstocheckandadviseofanydocumentaryerror.(Editor’snote:shouldyoubeawareofanyomissionstothisrecordpleasecontactWasylon83361262.)

WasylLabazwasawardedtheorderofOAMforservicestotheUkrainianCommunityin1995.TheUkrainiancommunityofSAisveryproudofWasyl’scontributiontotheartsandwisheshimallthebestforthefuture.

From the Archives Migration of Displaced Persons in Europe to Australia

(ThefollowingintroductionisanextractfromPeterPlowman’sbook“AustralianMigrantShips1946‐1977”)“On21stJuly1947,theAustralianGovernmentsignedanagreementwiththeInternationalRefugeeOrganisation(IRO)inGenevatoaccept12,000displacedpersonsperyear,thoughthisnumberwouldgreatlyincreaseoversubsequentyears.ImmigrationofficialsweresentfromAustraliatogotothesecampsandinterviewpersonswishingtoemigrate.However,beforebeingaccepted,theywereputthroughagruellingexamination.Immigrationofficialsweretochooseattractive,preferablyfairtypeswhowouldfitintowhiteAustralia.Goodhealthwasessential.Ifonefamilymemberwasill,includingtheblindanddeaf,therestcouldtravel,buttheinfirmonewouldhavetostaybehind.Thiswasunacceptabletomostfamiliesinthatsituation,whowoulddeclinetogo.Oncepeoplewhowereaccepted,arrangementswouldbemadeforthemtobetransportedtoAustraliabyship.Inordertomovethesepeople,alargenumberofshipswouldberequiredbuttherewereinsufficientnumbersofsuitablepassengervesselsavailableforsuchatask.TheIRObeganofferingcontractstoownerspreparedtoutiliseshipsinthisrole,andmanyvesselsneverdesignedtocarrypassengers,ortravelvastdistances,werequicklyrefittedwithextremelyaustereaccommodationbeforebeingsenttoportsinGermanyandItalytoloaduphugenumbersofpassengersandcarrythemhalfwayaroundtheworldtoanewlife.”

OnesuchvesselusedforthetransportationofDisplacedPersonswastheshipSSGOYA(originallybuiltandnamedKamerun,builtin1938withaccommodationforonly12passengersandoperatedacargoservicefromHamburgtoWestAfrica).TheGoyawasconvertedandfittedoutwithbasicquartersforabout900personsinsegregateddormitoriesconstructedinthecargoholds.InMarch1949,SSGoyaleftGenoainItalyonitsfirstvoyagetoAustralia,

carrying907passengerstoAdelaide,arrivinghereon2MayandberthingatOuterHarboron3May1949.ThiswasthefirstboatloadofUkrainiandisplacedpersonswhosettledinAdelaide.ThesepioneerswerehousedinitiallyattheWoodsideArmyCampintheAdelaideHillsandgraduallyresettledthroughoutSouthAustralia.



On8June1999,thePremierofSouthAustraliaandMinisterforMulticulturalAffairs,MrJohnOlsen,sentalettertoallthepassengersofSSGoyaacknowledgingtheirarrivaltoSouthAustraliaandexpressinghisthanksforwhattheyhavegiventoSouthAustraliaoverthelastfiftyyears.ThePremiersaid,“TothoseofuswhowerenotontheSSGoya,itisdifficulttoimaginethedifficultiesyoumusthavefaced,bothinmakingsuchajourney,andinbeginninganewlifeinanewcountrywithadifferentlanguage,cultureandclimate.Thecourageyoushowedinovercomingthesedifficultiesistobeadmired.Now,ahalf‐centurylater,wecanlookbackandreflectonwhatwehaveachievedtogether.WehaveallhelpedbuildtheSouthAustraliaweseearoundustoday.Everyoneoneofushascontributedtoforgingsomethingthatisuniquetoourcountry–ourAustralianidentity–madeupofdiversepeoplesfromallcornersoftheglobe,livingtogetherinharmony.WewouldhavebeenaverydifferentsocietyindeedhadnottheSSGoya,andothermigrantships,dockedinAdelaide’sOuterHarborhalfacenturyago.”Forfurtherinformationortocontributetothiscolumn,pleasecontactusat:[email protected],contactSlavkoKowalczuk,on0412590951.
