Stomach

Intro:
•Muscular, saclike organ•Connects the esophagus and
small intestine.
Focus Questions:•What are the three parts of
the stomach?
•Where is the stomach located?
Anatomy• Is divided into three parts:
–Fundus
–Corpus
–Antrum
• Secretes hormones, acid, mucus and proteases.
Physiology•The stomach has three main
functions:–Kill parasites and bad bacteria that is digested.
–Breakdown the food into smaller particles.
–Temporarily holds food and releases it at a constant rate down to the lower parts of the digestive system.
Location:
• On the left side of the body under the diaphragm
• It is located between the esophagus and small intestine.
Stomach Ulcers
• Is a small hole in the gastrointestinal tract.
• The size ranges between 1/8 of an inch to 3/4
• Ulcers in the stomach are called Gastric ulcers.
• They are not contagious or cancerous.
• Stomach ulcers are very common
Signs and Symptoms:
• loss of appetite • sudden, sharp stomach pains • nausea • frequent burping or hiccupping • weight loss • vomiting• bloody or blackish bowel movements
Diagnosis Process• First they do a physical examination• Then ask about past health
problems, meds you are taking, your families history of health and allergies
• Then they perform a serious of test:– upper gastrointestinal (GI) series – Endoscopy
Treatments:
• They are treated by medicines prescribed by a doctor
• They antibacterial kills the bacteria and reduces the amount of acid in your stomach.
• If you smoke or drink alcoholic beverages you are also required to quit because they inhibits or forbids the healing of the ulcer
Interesting Facts: • When you blush, the lining of your
stomach also turns red.• Your stomach has to produce a new
layer of mucus every two weeks, otherwise it will digest itself.
• The acid in your stomach is strong enough to dissolve razorblades.
