CARE and RESPECT Today and Every Day

Farewell & Thank You 2017 YEAR END EDITION

VOLUME 10, Issue 12

Our Farewells On June 17, 276 grade 12 students were acknowledged for successfully completing graduation requirements as they crossed the stage at our 2017 Commencement Ceremony at the UBC Chan Centre for Performing Arts. Thank you Grads of 2017 for your many contributions to the school over the years and the leadership you have provided and especially your legacy of care and respect. We wish our grads success in whatever paths post-secondary school life will take you and good health and happiness. Grads as you join the ranks of the Steveston-London alumni, we hope you will keep in touch and visit often.

We would also like to say good-bye to the students and families who will be moving from our school to attend different schools next year. You have been a valued part of our community and have contributed to making this a successful year. To the students and their families, we wish you all the best in your new settings.

This school year marked the end of careers in education for two long standing SLSS staff. Mr. Drew Hunt, PE teacher, and Ms. Sherry Sutherland, library technician, chose to retire from SLSS to move on to the next milestone in their lives. We thank Mr. Hunt and Ms. Sutherland for their dedication and contributions to the SLSS community over the years and extend best wishes in all their future endeavours. Two other staff members who will not be with us in September are Ms. Celine Jackson and Ms. Katrina Lau. We wish them well in their role being full time parents for the year. This end of June marked last days at SLSS for a large group of valued staff members who are departing for different opportunities and experiences: Ms. Rhiannon Vining, Home Economics; Mr. Jasmeet Dhari, PE; Mr. Alvin Bonifacio, Learning Resource; Mr. Nick Hamm, Math; Mr. Craig Milhom, ELL and Social Studies; Mr. David Liethman, Learning Resource and Planning; Ms. Heather Dawson, Learning Resource; Ms. Grace Kim, Planning; Mr. Tim Ubial, Math, Science and IT; Ms. Joanne Panas, English; and Ms. Connie Easton, Counselling. Ms. Easton, has worked with SLSS students and their families for several decades, and will continue to be connected with SLSS in her new role as District teacher consultant. We thank all our departing staff for their dedication and commitment to the school and wish each and every one all the best in their future. Once a Shark, Always a Shark!

Thank You SLSS PAC! A heartfelt thank you to the SLSS PAC, especially to the executive, for all your hard work to organize and support events and activities throughout the year – Staff Appreciation, Breakfast with Santa, Sharkfest. Thank you to all of the parents who contributed and helped our PAC Executive with the PAC events and activities. The thoughtful and careful disbursement of fundraising and gaming funds to support and enhance student activities in our school is very much appreciated. On behalf of all the parents and staff, we would like to express a special thanks to our PAC Executive who volunteered their time, expertise and energy – Co-Chairpersons, Michele McLean and Roisin Clenachan-Johnson, and Treasurer Tammy Ross.

Thank you also for the Staff Appreciation breakfast on June 21. It was a great way to start the day and

2017 YEAR END EDITION

Headrush II 2017 On the afternoon of Thursday, June 22 all three grades of Spectrum students participated in Headrush II 2017. First, they were dropped off in Steveston and given a photo challenge in their multi-grade teams. The teams were asked to take a variety of photos representing the four core values of Spectrum: inquiry, independent learning, learning community, and leadership. Winners of the various challenge categories, from best abstract photo to best selfie, can be found at @mmelevin. They then ended the day at Garry Point, where they reflected upon and celebrated the end of the year. Spectrum wishes the grade 10s the best of luck next year as they enter grade 11 and leave the program, and looks forward to welcoming the new class of grade 8s!

Musical Notes The Music Department had a successful year this year, with several community concerts, such as Education Week, Jazz Nite, and Richmond Sings, as well as elementary concerts, and a Fine Arts Celebration in June. This summer several of our students will be participating in summer music camps. If you would like more information about these camps, contact Mr. Mikulin at [email protected].

CARE and RESPECT Today and Every Day

On the afternoon of June 17, our 275 grade 12 students crossed the stage at the beautiful UBC Chan Centre for the Performing Arts. It was a memorable celebration of our students’ many academic and extracurricular accomplishments. Over 1000 parents, family, friends, and special guests joined our graduating students at the Commencement Ceremony. Valedictorian, Melody Chen, represented her classmates with grace, humour, and inspiration and the SLSS Vocal Ensemble and Jazz Ensemble led by Mr. Michael Mikulin, performed for the guests before the ceremony and provided a very meaningful musical interlude during the ceremony. The achievements and accomplishments of our grads were realized in the large number of awards, scholarships, and post-secondary entrance awards presented. It was a wonderful afternoon of celebration for the entire Steveston-London school community.

The formal Dinner & Dance at the Fairmont Waterfront Hotel and the Dry After Grad on June 30 and July 1 were two final celebrations for our graduating students. Many thanks to the Grad Committee for organizing the program at the Dinner & Dance which included a parting Lip Dub video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BSscV4vBuBI&feature=youtu.be) put together by the Grad Committee. Well done Grad Committee 2017!

On behalf of all of the Grads, a huge thank you to the DAG Committee, chaired by Loreen Long and Laura Takasaki and all of the parent volunteers, for the fabulous “last night of high school” celebration back at the school after busing back from the Dinner & Dance in Vancouver. Thank you to all the parents who fundraised throughout the year, came out to help at all the fundraising events, and put together the night decorating, organizing everything, supervising, and cleaning up! The students had a wonderful time devouring the variety of food and refreshments, and participating in the many activities arranged by DAG parent organizers. A fun night was had by all!

Core Competencies – How did we do? New this school year was the student self-assessment in their development of the Core Competencies. At SLSS staff chose to focus specifically on two of the six core competencies Communication and Personal Awareness and Responsibility. Inherent in all curricular courses is the development of core competencies. This year in their lesson, teachers made explicit specific core competencies were being developed in the particular lesson or unit. Students were provided with opportunities to reflect on their learning. On June 21 and 22, students did a self-assessment in the form of a written reflection in their development of Communication and Personal Awareness and Responsibility. You might note the evidence of your child’s success in this area in what your child wrote in the Core Competency Evaluation form enclosed with your child’s final report card. From a school-wide perspective, based on the grade 10 and 12 student responses to the Satisfaction Survey which they took in April, our teachers are teaching and students are developing in both these two Competency areas. At both grade levels, 70% to 80% of the students responded “all the time” and “most of the time” that they are learning:

• to communicate effectively (listening fully, watching for visual cues, summarizing clearly;

• basic social skills that I need for the future (inter-personal, communication, teamwork);

• how to care for my physical health (getting healthy food, exercise and sleep);

• making decisions to do something/stop to think how it might affect others; to make a difference in my community;

• and how to solve problems in peaceful ways; • to understand and support human rights and human diversity.

Though this is a report of only grade 10 and grade 12 students, with the consistency of rating at both grade levels, it can be assumed that students in grades 8, 9 and 11 are successfully developing core competency skills.

Time to Reflect and to Look Ahead
