MAY 2017

Student Vote at SLSS On Monday May 8th, SLSS students exercised their democratic right and responsibility by participating in Student Vote 2017. SLSS students along with students from across British Columbia took on the roles of election officials, and organized a vote using authentic election materials. The ballots were counted by each school and reported to CIVIX confidentially. The Student Vote results will be released publicly by CIVIX on election night (May 9) and shared with the media for broadcast and publication. Special thanks to Mrs. Christie and her Social Studies students for organizing and running SLSS’s Student Vote. Richmond Sports Awards Congratulations to grade 12 students Fardaws Aimaq and Valerie Wideski for being recognized by the Richmond Sports Council as the High School Male Athlete and High School Female Athlete winners for 2016. Fardaws was recognized for outstanding achievement in basketball, and Valerie was recognized for outstanding achievement in rugby. Further congratulations to Valerie for being named to the U18 national team!

Grade 8 Social Responsibility Day

Social Studies Department News In April, Mr. Aun, Social Justice teacher, organized two guest speakers to speak to senior level Social Studies students (Social Justice 12, Law 12, History 12, Socials 11). The two speakers were Dr. Simmee Chung and Elder Don who talked about major Social Justice 12 themes that include poverty, homelessness and racism. The focus of the presentation weaved Dr. Chung’s research around creating more inclusive spaces in schools and Elder Don’s life story. This careful weaving demonstrated the hardships and impact of colonization, a result of the experiences of life in a Residential School. Stories about poverty, homelessness, addiction, and incarceration were gripping. The presentation wrapped up the different Social Justice 12 themes by asking questions like, “how can we help?”, “how can we build a sense of community?”, and “why should we care?” .

On April 28, Grade 8s participated in a very successful half day seminar organized and led by our dedicated Peer Helping Leadership and senior students. The theme of the day was Be Your Own Hero, where students focused on how they can have and make a positive impact on the school community and beyond. A special thank you to Ms. O’Neill, Ms. Levin, and Ms. Shearer.

SLSS PAC Meeting – May 10 All parents are invited to the next PAC meeting. Ms. Kwon, vice principal will talk about the controversial Netflix series “Thirteen Reasons Why” and issues around “vaping”. The last PAC meeting of this school year will be on Wednesday, June 14 and it is the Annual General Meeting. In preparation for the AGM and the election of PAC executive members, please contact PAC co-chairs, Michele McLean and Roisin Clenachan-Johnson if you would like to submit a nomination for an executive position on the PAC for 2017-2018. Message from DAG The annual DAG Car Wash Fundraiser is this Saturday, May 13 from 10 AM to 3 PM in the SLSS Williams Road parking lot. In addition to getting your car washed, you can purchase some delicious baked goods, and pick up a flower for your mother. Also, if you have any bottles to donate, we would really appreciate if you could bring them! If you have any questions, please contact [email protected] or Loreen at 604-724-7009.

The next DAG meeting is May 10 at 7:30 PM in the library.

Vaping & e-Cigarettes In response to what appears to be an increase in “vaping” in our school community, we wanted to take this opportunity to provide some educational materials to students and parents. Although e-cigarettes and vaporizers are advertised as a “safer alternative” to cigarettes, they haven’t been scientifically tested or proven to help quit smoking. Because of this, no positive health claims for e-cigarettes can legally be made and in fact, may be dangerous to a person’s health.

Students and parents should also be aware that district guidelines prohibit the use of e-cigarettes and vaporizers on school property in the same way they do cigarettes. Please refer to the attachment at the end of this newsletter for additional information
