In 1867... Henry Crapo was serving his second term as the Governor of Michigan. Michigan became the first state to tax property to support a University. (Go Blue!)
Laura Ingalls Wilder, Frank Lloyd Wright, and Cy Young were born. The Order of the Patrons of Husbandry (aka “The Grange”) was founded. Yellow fever killed nearly 3,100 people in New Orleans. The Prohibition National Committee was formed. The United States took control of Midway Island. Andrew Johnson was President, having succeeded to office following President Lincoln’s assassination. No Vice President took office again until the 1868 election. The District of Columbia granted voting rights to African American men, despite President Johnson’s veto. (Sorry ladies, you had to wait too much longer!) Secretary of State William Seward purchased Alaska from Alexander II of Russia for $7.2 million (2 cents/acre). Media at the time dubbed it “Seward’s Folly.” Hindsight suggests it was anything but a folly! An artesian spring began gushing in Fountain Point, MI. It’s still flowing! A Methodist Episcopal Church was founded in Stevensville, MI. It’s still going! I wonder what those who founded this church imagined would happen to the congregation over 50, 100, or 150 years. Did they envision growth such that the old building would be replaced by the space we now occupy? Did they dare to dream, hope, and pray that the 1844 schism in the Methodist Episcopal Church over the issue of slavery would one day be healed? That the M.E. Church North and South would find some way to come back together? We did, but it took (much) longer than the Civil War. I wonder what the world will look like 150 years from now. What events in that time period will have shaped the world? Our nation? Our state? Our community? Some suggest humans may regularly live to 125 or 150. Society and economies clearly will have changed in ways we can’t conceive. What things today will have gone the way of the “buggy whip” or “tall hat” of 150 years ago? Will we have a colony on Mars? Will we have obliterated the planet with nuclear weapons? Will climate change have led to a massive die off of species, including 90% or more of humanity? Who knows. And some would say who cares? And who are we that we can do anything about it anyway? Well, there’s one thing I’m sure of — In 150 years, Jesus will still be LORD of all creation. I certainly hope and pray those who follow us will have solved the loom-ing problems of climate change, soil depletion, energy production, clean water, social and political unrest, war, starvation, homelessness, disease, and the list goes on... But of course everything other than the Lordship of Christ, everything else will more or less be in control of humans. In the beginning God made us as Co-Creators, set us free in the world to grow, multiply, learn, build, discover the “secrets” of the creation itself. What we do with all that knowledge that grows at a rapidly rising rate is up to us. Even now. And the same holds true of our church. What we do in the next year or two or five will in be part of determining what the church will become in 25, 50, 100, or 150 years. We may not be able to turn the world, or the ship of state, or our church 90 or 180 degrees while we remain upon this good earth. But as any sailor, captain, or pilot will tell you, over a long enough distance even a change of 1 degree or a 1/2 a degree can make miles of difference in where you end up. In the eternal scope of things, a change of course by just a tenth of a degree can make billions of miles of difference in the course of a beam of light streaming across the universe! And WE are called to be light! To the world! To the nations! To one another! And to our community! That’s why 150 years ago a group of people founded this congregation. What comes next and is carried forward from here is up to all of us, working together through good and tough times, trusting that Jesus is with us every step of the way. May the dust from Jesus’ sandals cover us all as we seek to walk with Him! Pastor David

WELCOME Bishop David Alan Bard
September 10, 8:30 & 11:00 Services
Bishop David Alan Bard is currently serving as Bishop of the Michigan Area of The United Methodist Church. A United Methodist pastor for over thirty years, he has served congregations in Roseau, on the Iron Range, and was from 1998-2005, the Northwest District Superintendent for The United Methodist Church in Minnesota. Just prior to coming to Michigan, Bishop Bard was pastor of First United Methodist Church Duluth, Minnesota, the community he grew up in. He served on a number of regional and denomination-wide boards and committees and was elected to represent the Minnesota Conference at five General Conferences (2000, 2004, 2008, 2012, and 2016). He was elected to the episcopacy in 2016.

In his first sermon as bishop, Bishop Bard said that he wanted his time here in Michigan to be marked by joy, wisdom, love and hope. He is delighted to be working with Michigan United Methodists to make disciples of Jesus Christ so that the world may be transformed. When he is not working, Bishop Bard enjoys walking, reading, movies, music and just spending time with family. Bishop Bard and his wife Julie are both natives of Duluth, MN. One Hundred Fifty Years of
Stevensville United Methodist Church
(continued)
Under the pastoral care of
Rev. Lloyd Phillips, we see
the church starting to
flourish. In January of
1975, the Stevensville
United Methodist Church
Rev. Lloyd Phillips made the final payment on
1969 – 1979 their first mortgage.
A Building Study Committee
was established
April of 1975 to do evaluation of facilities.
Updating the heating system immediately so as to provide
even and adequate heating for our church.
Purchase of land for the growth of our church.
Replacing the present organ.
Recommended the creation of a Building Committee to better
serve the needs of our total congregation, church education,
youth, adult and community. Their study indicated needs in
the junior and senior choir and other music program
area, secretarial work room, education consultant, counseling
area; more accessible library; and a large informal greeting area.
According to a story in the Lakeshore Courier on August 16, 1978: “The Stevensville United Methodist Church conducted a ground breaking ceremony August 13, 1978, at the 10:00 a.m. worship service for the new approximately 7,000 sq ft. addition and remodeling to the present church facility. The completed project would provide eight additional classrooms, crib room, combination library/lounge/resource center, enlarge kindergarten room, general office and work room, Pastor study, Christian Education Assistant’s office-education work
facilities and kitchenette. It would also provide additional
parking and more efficient egression.”
On September 18, 1975 this committee brought to the Administrative Board these recommendations:

UMW Committee of the Month
United Methodist Women would like to thank Myra Thompson,
Sharon Foxworthy, Leanne Nitz and Marcia Williams for serving on
the August committee of the month. Your help is appreciated.
At Stevensville United Methodist Church many events are supported
by the United Methodist Women (UMW). Each month a group of
women volunteer for “Committee of the Month” where they help
with funeral luncheons and various meals held at church. This is a
vital service to our church family and is greatly appreciated. If you
would like to be included on the “Committee of the Month”
calendar, please contact Myra Thompson @ 428-0201 or email

United Methodist Women (UMW) is launching a Cookbook Blog.
Please drop off your favorite recipe (and your mother’s) in the
bin marked “Recipe Drop-Off” at the
UMW Service Projects table in the
hallway. A story or a picture along with
your recipe would be great!
Do you have a favorite Bible verse of the
day or devotion? Drop that in there too!

Stevensville United Methodist Church.
MISSIONS FOR SEPTEMBER
The Stevensville United Methodist Church Missions Ministry
organizes numerous special funds for mission work to continue.
The following missions have been chosen by your Mission
Ministry as beneficiaries of your mission giving for the month of
September. Your generous giving helps people locally and all over
the world! Collections for these missions will occur during the
Sunday services or you are welcome to send in a donation to the church.
SEPTEMBER 3 - ARNOLDINE MISSION ZIMBABWE
The Mission at Arnoldine includes a
school, church, clinic and farm. Our own
Farai Rukunda was born and raised in
Arnoldine. He was adopted by the
founders of the mission after the death
of his parents. Currently we have helped with maintenance
on the church building, installed a well for the school,
purchased text books and desks. Farai’s vision has lead him
to form a nonprofit mission to extend the aid to his home town
and beyond in Zimbabwe.
SEPTEMBER 10 - CHRISTIAN EDUCATION SUNDAY
“Calls the church as the people of God to be
open to growth and learning as disciples of
Jesus Christ.” Christian Education is not just
for children. It is for everyone!!
SEPTEMBER 17 - EMERGENCY SHELTER
Working to end and prevent homelessness in
Berrien County, the Shelter provides
temporary housing for families and single
parents with children. They then assist those
families in finding permanent homes.
SEPTEMBER 24 - STEVENSVILLE AND BEOYND
We highlighted this new mission focus in the August
Newsletter. To recap: we are looking for opportunities to do
mission right HERE and right NOW. Your vision and
knowledge are needed. Where should
we go and what should we do? People
n our own community are needing the
love of Jesus!
Thank You for supporting the Missions Ministry of SUMC.
