Some thoughts from my desk…

It is June 27th and I am sitting at my desk thinking about the list

of things I need to get done (including my August newsletter article)

before Susan and I head out on Sunday. Part of me is still in Mission,

South Dakota at the Todd County Middle School where we painted, an-

other part of me is anticipating our leave and the rest of me is thinking

about what it will be like when we return in six weeks. When you read

this we will have been gone four weeks.

This experience is good of both of us, you and I. It has been

good for me to learn how to let go and allow you, SUMC, to be “the

church” in even a deeper way than ever before. At the same time, I

hope it has been an opportunity for you to run with the joy of “being”

SUMC , a church of Jesus Christ, in a deeper way than you thought

possible before.

It has been my prayer that this experience has and will continue

to be enriching for all of us as we claim the gifts God has given us and

used them in the life of the church. At the same time, I pray you have

enjoyed the beauty of our area, walked the beaches, watched a sunset

or two, and had some wonderful family time.

I can’t wait to see you in a couple weeks!

I can’t wait to get started for this new fall season!

One commercial note:

Family Camp Weekend with Sunnyside UMC is

August 10-12. It will be an awesome weekend!

Take care everyone, Gordie

AN INVISIBLE THREAD

Monday, September 10th – 6 pm Sisters in Faith will be discussing the book “An Invisible Thread” by Laura Schroff and Alex Tresniowski at 6 pm at the church. The book is available at Parables for $25 but is available in paperback from Amazon for $12.98. Mary Shaffer highly recommends this book saying that it will be a “story that will leave a lasting impression”. Mary has one copy herself if you would like to borrow it. Before discussing the book, we will be having a salad buffet. Mary is our hostess and will provide lettuce and dressings. A signup sheet will be on the UMW board to bring additional toppings. Please join us. Remember that Sisters in Faith is open to any woman.

Mission News The Stevensville United Methodist Church

Missions Team organizes numerous special funds

for mission work to continue. The following

collections will occur during the Sunday services:

AUGUST 5... SAFE SHELTER Did you know that ... Every 18 seconds a woman is battered? That domestic violence crosses all ethnic, social, economic and religious boundaries? 40 percent of all female victims are killed by family members or boyfriends?

SAFE SHELTER provides a safe haven for women and children in Berrien County when many times victims arrive with nothing but the clothes on their backs.

AUGUST 12... HABITAT FOR HUMANITY This agency uses volunteer help to build homes for low income people. Those accepted into the program must provide hundreds of hours of work on their own home and to help others in the pro-gram. The SUMC Missions volunteers provide lunch for the Habitat workers.

AUGUST 19... UMCOR The United Methodist Committee on Relief pro-vides volunteers and supplies in disaster areas.

AUGUST 26... RURAL LIFE SUNDAY This offering helps small town ministries in the West Michigan Conference by providing scholar-ships for seminary studies, continuing education for pastors and providing worship materials for churches.

Please note that you can donate to any mission at

any time. Please place your donation in any

offering envelope with instructions written on the

“other” line. Thank you!

HABITAT FOR HUMANITY LUNCHES Myra Thompson, Pat Neiman and Carolyn Yoder provided lunch on July 11 for a mission work team from Defiance, Ohio. It was a pleasure to talk with and serve these dedicated workers.

Secret Saint Program Calling all College Students!

It may seem like the last semester just ended, but it won’t be long and it will be time to head off to school…

College is a four-year-long series of opportunities, crises, and adventures. New people, places, and things; choosing a

major, funding your studies, facing that first exam; living in a dorm, off campus on your own, or commuting from at

home with your parents. The list is very long, but no task is as important as this:

Choose your friends wisely. Pray and ask God to send people who will be good friends; people who will live and act

wisely and in ways that bring glory to God, themselves and their families. Do all that you can to surround yourself with

people who are actively growing in Christ.

The Secret Saint program at SUMC will help keep our college students connected to their church family while away at

school. Through cards, letters and care packages, your Secret Saint will remind you that you are not only loved and

supported, but being held in someone’s thoughts and daily prayers. We encourage all of our first year college students

to participate, but all college students are welcome to be a part of the program

Fill out the application form (found at the Opportunities Desk) and turn it in to the church office ASAP so a Saint can be

assigned to you by the start of the school year. The next four years will be full of a lot of adventures. Have a great

time. Study hard, survive calculus, support your college sports teams, and don’t forget to call home once in a while--just

to check in! If you have any questions, please contact Nick Lesch at 429-4882 or e-mail [email protected]

Simple Gifts

Be the hands and feet of Christ through the simple gift of a

smile, a touch, a kind or encouraging word, a hug, share

wonder with child, etc. When we share simple gifts with

others, we receive so much more and spread the hope which

Christ gives to all. When you give a hug or smile, don’t you

usually get one back?

We would like to thank each and every one of you who put so much time and

effort into preparing such a wonderful luncheon for our family and friends after

the memorial service for Roger Parrish.

We can’t find words enough to let you know how much it meant to us.

Thank you also for your cards and prayers.

God bless you all, Tom and Bonnie Parrish

THANK YOU!
